I saw these guys at Carleton College Spring Concert in 1989. Fantastic set. They've been in my mind ever since. Criminal that they didn't make it big; they were SO much better than many bands that came out of the grunge scene.
Turtledove!! Thank you so much!! I got into TS with LULU, and Look at the Moon, which they had played on KJJO 104 in pretty heavy rotation at the time. I bought every album they put out, and loved every minute of that period, when music meant something to people. Thank you for sharing this!
My best friend in Madison was a friend of a band member so I went with him to see them whenever they played in Madison. Have to say they were great and nice.
Yesterday was digging through a dusty box, found a tape, "Trip Shakespeare", and something made me pop it in the player tho I couldn't quite remember what Trip Shakespeare meant...as the tape unwound I found myself singing along and remembering amazing nights across my back alley at the Uptown...each song something special in a northern way, maybe you need know about snowy Minneapolis nights for this to light up your soul, but boy did they...
got lucky and stumbled across them (before Dan came back) at Mr. B's on Uni. in Saint Paul. They had a percussionist/keyboard player and Elaine had her bass drum on 2 folding chairs. pretty early on I guess. Sometimes you just get lucky. Miss 'em... they sure were great fun!
LIke I said, I almost quit music forever. I said to myself, if the Replacements, the Suburbs and Trip Shakespeare don't make it huge somethings wrong. Thank God Dan Wilson Is big now, I wish his brother Matt would hit it soon. I did a lot of session work in Madison with Butch Vig and Steve Marker. We used to sit around and talk about this after Suburbs shows at Merlyns. Unbelievable shows. Great music never gets old.
I was lucky enough to see them in Redondo Beach after LULU came out. Very small club, sat on stools with the stage as our table. We knew all three albums note for note. The place was empty until the end, when the fans of Timbuk 3 started showing up.
But the early 90's in LA, there was alot of new music coming out, and this obscure band from Minnesota wasn't clicking with my friends.
Good god. This song. I played it in a tour bus when I was a tourguide up in Alaska--after the customers got out and I was going to refuel. That was the summer of 89 and I think this was one of like the first 3 CDs I owned and I had a huge Sony Discman that I put on the dash of the bus and drove the Alaska Highway to this record. They were definitely headed in a unique artistic direction that had monstrous impetus.
Was the breakup just brothers fighting? That simple?
They had the look, the sound, the talent. They really should've gone further. What the H happened? This was the band to go see live, tho their cd was excellent and I used to play it all the time (Bachelorette!).
I remember they would get the crowd at the Cabooze in Mpls worked up to a lather with songs like "two wheeler", and would we move for them, none of this just standing and bopping our heads.
Dang! They were the last of the good bands. After them, the magic started to drain away from Mpls
Trip Shakespear played in Atlanta quite a few times and had a pretty good following. I dragged all my friends to the shows and they became fans too. The last show they played was at an awesome small venue, (converted movie theater) and the opening act was Blur...can you believe it. Blur wasn't big in the US at the time, I still have the "not for sale" promo cassette tape that the drummer from Blur gave me. Good times!
My favorite Trip show was at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. We almost crashed driving there because there was a bad snow storm. When the opening riffs of "Snow Days" started, the entire full house started singing the opening verse; "it's coming down..." Very magical and fun show. Lots of falling down onstage and slides. They were great performers.
Rockin good memories there. This is exactly how I remember Trip Shakespeare, the relentless energy, the throttling guitar duels, the whipping hair, cool Elaine on the skins. Seeing them was a pleasure, and I'm grateful I was able to experience their shows many many times around the midwest. Thanks a bunch for posting this!
Lot's of memories in Lawrence, Ks!

Love TS. Saw them live at Liberty Lunch in Austin, Texas, in the early '90s ... maybe 1992? One of the best live shows I've ever seen.

God I LOOVED these guys. They can really rock live too. Saw them in 1990 at TT The Bears in Cambridge Mass. John Munson is very tall, walked by him.
