I like this performance a lot. There is something missing from this tenor's voice that keeps me from getting really excited. The package is there, the technique, looks, acting, I think that it's a squillo thing for me. Make no mistake- I think that he is a tremendous talent! For me, Vickers is the most compelling Florestan though.
Jonas Kaufmann is one of the greatest tenors of the last few years!! His technique is just incredible. I heard him as Lohengrin together with Anja Harteros at Munich. It was impressive!!
Florestans' Aria is one of the most difficult arias for tenor and in my opinion Kaufmann's interpretation is the best!
A wonderful Florestan never the less. Well sung on a "tight" tempo, and the "stretta" from "Und spür ich nicht linde" to the end of the aria is sooo difficult. Good sound, never a sign of stress. Bravo Kaufmann!
Luck1, please do not mention Domingo and Heppner with Vickers, Roswenge, King and Kaufmann in the same sentence! I also wonder if you are qualified to comment on his diction
Jonas Kaufmann can not be compared with any other tenors; he is a category by himself, a sort of new Caruso! Or the first Kaufmann!! His instrument is different; he uses more resonance rooms than singers did in the past. For some listeners it might sound as if the voice is sometimes in the wrong place but it is not! Kaufmann brings a new chromatic dimension giving the best example of a vocal chiaro-oscuro with a huge diameter and volume in the voice. IMO the best tenor in the world!
I'm curious about these "resonance rooms" you talk about. Also, could you explain what a vocal diameter is? I've studied the voice in a classical setting as well as physiologically for over a decade and have never heard such ambiguous jargon. I urge you to do more research, or look at more videos on youtube, if you think this is the best tenor in the world. Sadly, Kaufmann not only can be compared with other tenors, but, he will be compared with other tenors: such is the way of man.
The only thing Jonas Kaufmann needs is the next years to come, which inevitably will just turn him simply unforgettable, as the extraordinary singer he already represents in Opera history.
It's imposible to compare this singer with Jon Vickers for this aria. The canadian was incredible as Florestan. Another great Florestans are James King and Wolfang Windgasen.
excellent dramatism as it has to be in this famous and wonderful intense scene, which opens act 2 of Fidelio,Beethoven's only opera, wish he had composed more, the orchestral part as in the whole opera is sublime, long live ludwig van
Dear Kaufmann..Who gives him critics are bad tenors, or one that never will make to the opera world..Gentelment you should pray God at night to have tenors in opera world like Kaufmann

ridiculous, he can´t even follow the melody (desentonado)the voice is opaque and the singing just boring.. please stop mentioning the great singers when you listen to this young and extremely advertised singer.
I disagree: Technically not better than Vickers. I think Kaufmann sings this scene very well, but at times he doesn't have enough support for the big pressure he builds up under his voice. Then it becomes too flat.
Not better?? Vickers has problems with the passaggio which is probably the most important thing for the classical voice. Kaufmanns passaggio is very good.
Of course I don't say that Vickers was immaculate but one should be cautious when comparing just one aria rendition with one of the great voices of the last century that had a career that lasted for thirty years. I was there in the Concertgebouw when Kaufmann cracked hugely in his aria in Berlioz Faust. No problem to me, but don't pretend his passagio is better than Vickers'.
And congratulations with the +1 for your remark already within an hour after your remark. You must have a big fan....
MMh, I don't think so.. Listen to Vickers and you see how he pulls up is chest voice... That is bad for the intonation and not really healthy... Kaufmann always sings with a very big part of his head voice, even when he sings in a very low parts. I don't say anything about the interpretation. Thats a matter of taste and technique actually isn't (although many people see technique very different...)

Apparently he doesn't have the voice for this kind of repertoire. It's painfully staking to finish listening to this.

Boring. I'm amazed this guy is compared to Vickers - who was a first class talent. This guy doesn't even hold a candle to him.
