The Amish are probably the most environmentally friendly people in our society: their entire lifestyle is set around minimal consumption. Yet they are productive where the basics of life are concerned. Their way of life is not based on what's easiest, fastest or most immediately gratifying. That should be cause for the rest of us to stop for a moment, and think about how we live.
They should offer internships so we may learn how to do everything without the world!!!! They should be carefull not to let go of their land. Agenda 21 will take that land from them. I'm fighting a fight for them here in Texas. Would like to warn them and let them know there are some of us praying for them.
The Amish are not under threat in terms of numbers: in the last 20 years the population has more than doubled in size. This is mainly due to their large families. They are however having to fend off more than ever the influence of modern evils like mobile phones, ipods and cars.
They pay taxes through things they sell...on the other hand they have a different tax system. But since they don't use public schools, firefighters, cops (usually), and most stuff that are paid through tax dollars, it doesn't cost the Government much money. So they really don't have to pay much taxes.
@BIGART1950 depends on the specific church. It could be specifically *posing* that their community doesn't allow, but as they say in the video... most of the people in the family have stopped being Amish.
@snedie69er no, they believe the 2nd of the 10 Commandments forbids it ("thou shalt make no graven image") as a form of idol worship. You're confusing them with some other cultures.
Funny....Modern Amish are trying to get out due to the way things are in a certain area while a lot of people in today's society are trying to get out and go back to self sustainability.
How sad to see modernity destroying such a wonderful life style. Heavens forbid should such a thing happen I believe humanity will be worse off - the Amish people and their lifestyle are inspirational.
Why can't the Muslims live like this, peaceful and non violent and centuries removed from the modern world.

@OutOnBailNow The "Amish" identity is bound up in a way of life which is becoming increasingly impractical in a police-state like America...
"price of ground" isn't the only problem but it's the biggest and most immediate at the moment...

Amish believe that any form of photography traps the soul in the picture.

Amish people have been living like that for years, and they can make it in the world just as people who use modern things can.
