I thought the main actor did a good job, particularly in the beginning, gleefully talking about destroying their young, and just generally being cheerful while he was murdering and oppressing the prawns. He obviously viewed them as less than insects, which is essentially how most racist groups think.

No self-respecting parent who actually gave a damn about their children would send them off to be someone's pet, under ANY circumstances.
And, if I do recall correctly, it certainly did not appear to me that the child was dying. Yes, the situation was potentially dangerous and the living conditions weren't the best, but Christopher took good care of his boy.
