  • I was raised on and used to believe the great southern fantasies about how the war was not about slaves and how the northerners were the ultimate aggressors, until I educated myself about the facts. Once you do that, there is no decent moral way that you can support the Confederacy. Please remember that you can still honor your southern ancestors while admitting that they were wrong; there is no shame in that.

  • Hi Whippy, When I started researching, then building pages for my CivilWarStory website, I had no clue what the real difference between the north and the south was. But now, years later, and after reading everything I could get my hands on about our Civil War, I now stand in the same position you so wisely referred to in you posting (below).

  • continued from above: "Once you do that (educate yourself), there is no decent moral way that you can support the Confederacy" I agree. Thank you for posting. And I like your sensitive nature.

  • I just finished reading the book. What happened the was awful. What this vid leaves out is the fact that Capt. Wurz tried over and over to get supplies for the prisoners but due to Union blockades was unsuccessful.

  • @dao3rd123

I read the book too. It was great historical fiction. The author told the story so well that you would think he was there.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Wirz is swiss and he was a murderer who makes hitler look pathetic.

  • " Maybe YOU are the one who should get his facts not only ...." correction in there .

  • I think all civil war prisons were horrible. North and South

  • @mpd613 I used nearly those exact words in the video. Thanks for posting. John (civilwarstory)

  • shebang

  • @spacedghOst78 Thank You!

  • Henry Wirz , a german miniature mind fucking scum , was commanding the extermination camp : well that explains all ....!

  • @Trulyloyale 1. He was Swiss, not German. 2. There were ALOT of Germans wearing the Blue. Many of whom were in this camp......get your facts right.

  • @TayJar94 #1 never said he was not swiss citizen, check better into my comment and you'll see " german miniature mind " for he being from Zurich , which makes henry wirz german in a percentage of 99% ...!

#2 More than 500.000 german-american soldiers fought in the Civil War joining both sides and some of them were prisoners at Andersonville , I know that .

Also many german -jewish soldiers did the same in WWI and they were all

" prisoners " in the many nazis extermination camps

  • so what ...???

Maybe YOU are the one if should get his facts not only right , but a bit more rational than they actually look ......!!

  • As member of mankind I got shocked by this : one of worst crimes against humanity of modern history . How can't anybody , no matter if Southern ur

Unionist or whatever , be horrified & de

eply disgusted with so infamous damn curs who had the gall to call themselves

    soldiers ?!

  • @Trulyloyale I asked myself the same question. Thank you writing. John

  • Can't there ever be a tribute to our troops on youtube without a bunch of treason-lovers coming along and starting fights?

  • Zeeboe,

You have to remember there are still an untold number of people, mostly in the south who really know nothing of the history of our Civil War or of how the initial actions of the Confederacy started it. A calm and honest discussion on the matter is impossible, trust me I've tried.

Thank you for posting. John (CivilWarStory)

  • You're very welcome, and yes, I too have tried to talk to those neo-rebs, and it's pointless. Our ancestors had the same issues, which is what lead to the war sadly.

Well, I believe the south will never rise again. The Union however will live forever, and I am grateful for ALL the Union troops that died fighting for their country, and I have nothing but respect for them.

    Long live the U.S.A.!

  • @Zeeboe

  • I'm not apologetic as a Southerner! The South was well within its rights, under the Constitution, to sucede. It took 4 tyrants to bring the South down; Lincoln, Grant, Sherman and Stanton. How many from Ohio? 21 million against 9 million; 4 mil of which were black!? I love the South...and it seems a lot of U damn yankees do to. Move down here and can't get them to leave! Did England have to go to war to end slavery there?

  • Maybe but not to enter into a Confederation which is illegal under the Constitution and besides if they seceded doesn't that mean they aren't bound by the Constitution to secede. One thing that you Southerns are to quick to forget is who fired the first shots of the War. The South fired upon a Federal installation. You cannot expect that the Government will not respond to being attacked.

  • Please explain just what the Southern States did that was Illegal under the Constitution. I dont think that you can name just one single thing that the Southern States are guilty of that the United States is not. I can see that "Us Southerners" seem to know a whole lot more about it that our Northern counterparts.

  • You obviously have never read the Constitution! States, and the peoples rights were more the premise of the Articles of the Confederation and the Constitution. Here's my point!!! Even today...to Amend the Constitution...who has to ratify it by at least two thirds? You think that the South fired the first shot? You think that FT. Sumter was the begining? You're assuming that the Federal Government can still on land in a state that has seceded!?

  • The Battle of Mannassas, you Yankees call it Bull Run, was the first battle. If those Yankee schools would teach history correctly, YOU would know that. And Lincoln said WE were the aggressors. The US came into Virginia, a Confederate state, and got their asses handed to them! The problem with the North, and I say this with upmost confidence, had and still has a King George the III mentality. (if you don't know who I'm talking about, you're gonna have to read some more)!

  • Agree completely! To let yall Yankees know we still got slavery today. Its called illegal immigrants. Were trying to get em to leave and yall Yankees want em to stay. My rolls have reversed. My great great grandaddy is probably rollin in his grave.

  • Thats how exactly how my friend's great................... grandfather would describe the camp. Good job!

  • @gabbers58 Thank you, Gabbers58!

  • Very informative. Do you have any videos on Camp Douglas, Point lookout or Elmira prisons? We can also ask, why did the North allow the POW's in Andersonville to suffer? No such thing as prisoner exchange I guess.

  • there was a prisoner exchange early in the war but Grant got rid of it because every Southern soldier paroled would go back to fight against the North. So to deprive them of manpower he ended the exchange.

  • I'm aware of the exchange...just wanted to get THAT story out! See...I find it more appauling that the North would allow their prisoners to starve in the South, using the excuse that Southerners would rejoin the fight after release!? No one has answered the question! The only issue that is brought up is...Oh, look what the South did! Meanwhile, Southerners were starving in Elmira while the farms surrounding the prison were having a banter season!

  • All Civil War prisons were hell holes. The situation in Andersonville wasn't unique. There were atrocities carried out by both sides. Men North and South suffered in prisons.

  • WISEOWL16,

It would probably serve your blood pressure well if you didn't take personally

any of the comments found on this page. This comment page and all of my videos are meant for people of all ages so if you must continue to prove your inability to use suitable language you will not be invited back.

    Thanks, John

  • i am sorry this is wieowl16's other account

  • im talkin bout that STOPNORTHERNHATRID kid.Hes pissin me off

  • Andersonville is a human tragedy. Andersonville has happened all over the world, before, during (North and South), and after the Civil War. If you make excuses for the Andersonvilles, you accept sides over caring, you willfully forget that we're all brothers and sisters of the same family. Godbless. Don't study the Civil War to fight the war again. It was murder; it is over. Study the past in order to make more loving choices in your present.

  • Parafleet,

Very nicely said. Thank you for taking the time to comment. John

  • does the audio really suck or is it my ears? This would be better if you could hear more of what your saying

  • hey you southern boy um its called pride you lil shit. You all southerners are weak. And yes andersonville was the worst and i mean worst prison in U.S history u dixie and not C.S.A history. Hate!? yeah its hat cuz u fuckin hate the north. Go look up ur history weakling. RACIST!!!! atleast New york didnt have slavery! Back then u ppl treated black people horribly! RACIST!!!!!!!!

  • Wiseowl,

You are barking up the wrong tree there pal. Not a single hint was even made about race, hate or anger. Are you sure you are commenting on MY video? Please take a moment to view it again as I think you will then agree that it is a simple compilation of documented facts.

  • @civilwarstory Aww, that kid got his ass kicked.

Scurvy was possibly the worst i've heard of about this camp, scurvy blows.

  • Captain Henry Wirz was a native of Switzerland in which German was a native language.........

  • go info

  • wirz the commandant was a german.typical.

  • The truth about Andersonville was that the south did not have the resources to properly take care of their prisoners. The north refused any prisoner exchange which would have alieviated the condition. This worked in favor of the northern propaganda machine.

  • Oh yeah they were tortured? REALLY? THAS KINDA FUNNY CASUE THE FACT WAS MOST OF THE WITNESSES COMMITED PERGURY AT THE STAND! THEY LIED AND THEY GOT MANY INNOCENT MEN HANG! YALL ARE FUCKIN YANKEES WHO JUST SPREAD THIS LIE TO COMMIT HATE AGAINST THE SOUTH!
