I saw this when it was 1st released Brilliant film & a credit to the age in which films were made No cgi, EVERY stunt was real!! Brilliant comment har4587, your a part of history!!!!
Ya, CED. It was like a record player in a cartrige. It had very good video but it would skip like a record and they say there was only 50 titles released.
I was a member of the San Mateo High School Marching Band, (CA), that was in that car chase. It was filmed on a Saturday 1973 in front of the Pacific Stock Exchange on Pine Street. Took us all day long to film. There were stuntmen and women wearing our band, and cheerleaders uniforms. One stuntman was injured, The catered lunch was great. As I watch this clip, I can see some of my friends from that day. We later mounted a crumpled trombone on the band room wall as a trophy to that day.
They are going to show this in San Francisco in a week at the Castro theater with McQueen's Bullitt. I can finally see Freebie and the Bean on the big screen and uncut!

Good shots of Downtown. Lots of those buildings are still there. The freeway they shot off of is long gone (Embarcadero Freeway), but a lot of those old buildings in the last half were renovated, and are now expensive office space. The rest were replaced by high rise condos, like the one I live in now. I remember the stunt for the very end -- shot off with a cannon on a ramp on the freeway. The apt bldg didn't exist, of course. It was a parking lot.
One of the best movies ever made , when they fly into the building is the best part ,i watched this with my father when he was alive ,it brings a lot of memorys back.
This was a great fond meorie with my dad, back in the day! Not only was this a great funny movie, my dad was a Highway Patrolman in both San Francisco and Across the bridge in Alameda county too!
I saw this movie with my dad at the Lake Forest Cinema in New Orleans East in1974. I was 13 at the time, and remembered how hard I laughed throughout this movie.
It's been forgotten because of "political correctness". No station wants to risk insulting anybody because it has the term "Bean" refuring to "beaner/mexican", which was the role Adam Arkin played. I was fortunante enough to see it years ago on HDNet. The ONLY way to view this movie is in widescreen. There is so much missed anyways if it's shown on tv or on stupid VHS tape. Got to see it in widescreen if possible. No stuido though will touch it because of the title. What a bunch of "pc" dopes.
It's all right were police officers! Ha what a movie. One of Alan Arkin and James Caans' best comic performances. This is what Caan did after the Godfather and it was funny! Man I haven't seen this since it came out!
Y wuz this movie so panned when it came out?? this movie is funny and the two leads are great. The car chase is up there with bullitt and Road warrior!!
You went to see this in 1974 on the big screen?! Sooo lucky! (and I've just noticed - 34years later - they even put stunt people in the back passenger seat - check out the stuntwoman in the orange car in 4.55 - 5.05!)
should be in the top five car chases of all time - and as for that stunt where the blue car narrowly misses the train - they're never gonna attempt THAT stunt again! (Bad Boys2 had a stunt where a van drives across the path of a train - however the real image of a moving train was electronically moved closer to the van - it was special effects!)
Fantastic! I haven't seen this since I was about eight, 25 years ago. From the same comedy car chase school as the Blues Brothers and HB Halicki, Ford built those LTDs tough didn't they?
Where oh where oh where did you get a LETTERBOX version of Freebie and The Bean??? I've been looking for a widescreen version of this gem of a cult movie for years but only have a beat up pan and scan version on VHS
One of the best car chases on film! Notice how the stunt driver does a forward-180 IN the tunnel, with a BIG Ford, and DOESN'T hit the sides! That was GOOD!
it's obscure by today's ADD standards. they don't make 'em this good anymore. and haven't in the last 25 years. when is this coming out on DVD so i can have a letterbox version?
The first time I saw this movie I was bedridden recuperating from leg surgery. When they crashed into the apartment...Alan Arkin clasping along the wall..the look on the old couple's faces...and then James Caan opening the door to get the apartment number to give the dispatcher for help...I laughed my ass off.
Yeah, that was good, but I had to stop it somewhere, it was getting awfully long. I was going to stop it when the car crashes into the building, but the bit with him asking for the phone and the old couple being so blase is hilarious.
Yeah, he calls, asks their police station to send a tow truck to this apartment building and number; "it's the...a..third floor"! James Caan: Priceless!
no it wouldn't have. back in the day stunts were stunts. they wouldn't get away with the stunts hollywood used to film in the 70's today. CGI is for wimps!
well said dane, back in those days stunts definetly LOOKED dangerous. The only exception today would be the massive car crash scene in Blues Brothers 2000 - allegedly two stuntpeople were sacked for not taking part in that stunt.
there's a great stunt in Used Cars where Gerritt Graham walks backwards into the path of a speeding car that just misses him and also the car flipping scene which almost took out a cameraman under a cloaking device and they kept it in the film! Zemeckis says in the commentary that they couldn't get away with those stunts in today's Hollywood. Sorry, but i couldn't sit thru 5 mins of that 2nd Blues Brothers film. A bad idea gone wrong, i'm afraid.
One "modern" stunt that is equal to the van jump in Freebie is the piperamp stunt done at night by the van in "Private wars". It reportedly flew 160feet,landed on the driver's side - leaving a dent on hollywood boulevard - and came back on 4wheels!!
Thanks for the excellent clip. Hilarious
