Crushing and smashing of the CRT screen will cause the hazardous materials to be released into the surrounding area, and a leaching process occurs as a result of this CRT breakage. These toxic materials will eventually find their way to you, and they will be absorbed through your lungs and skin. When the glass screen is crushed, the lead-bearing particles become an airborne hazard.

The older the TV the tougher it is. The glass is very thick and robust.
I tried to break a really old one (like 30 years) with a hammer and failed miserably.
