The funny thing is that this sketch came out before it was revealed that Milli Vanilli were lip-synchers, so it shows that the U.S., particularly black America, already was giving this group a lot of ridicule because they were these seemingly black Europeans from out of nowhere doing cheesy dance music. It definitely shows a rare & disturbingly more bigoted side of African American culture at the time in that they likened their very real German & French accents to that of cartoon characters.
@RocStarr913 in addition, many (not all) african americans in the late 80s/early 90's were not even aware that blacks resided anywhere else beside the US, carribbean and africa. Milli Vanilli was just one of the many pressences that challenged this notion. On a smaller note, the Wayans' as actors have never been good at accents in general.
i´m sorry but the shit was funny when this skit hit! i saw this skit when it first aired on tv--channel 5 fox station. milli vanilli were an embarrassment to african-americans. hence, the parody. everything about milli vanilli was late--dance moves and all; to their willing exploitation by their white producer. who cares where they were from? their presentation in the video was bad!
what r u talkin about? da video was bad. who cares where they originated from? when i 1st saw the video--girl, you know...i had to laugh myself. they looked like 2 blac girl scouts. bigotry has nothing 2 do with it. it was comedy. i´m glad some1 made fun of them bcuz silli vanilli (i guess, having grown up in europe) didn´t realize how stupid they really looked! don´t come to the black america with that crap.
@AlbanianMan yeah you're probably right. Same thing happened to Ace of Base(except they actually used their voice), they tried to come back in the late 90s but nothing like their mainstream stuff. I think MV pretty much ruined the reputation of pop music IMO, but i still think its better than the crap on the radio.
I wonder what would have happened if Milli Vanilli werent fake...would they have been a flash in the pan or would they have bern music legends(in a good way)?
@SoopremeBeing If they weren't fake (or if they hadn't been caught) They probably would have released another album or two before fading out. By 1993, they probably would have been done anyway. With the rise of grunge and gangsta rap, I don't see how Milli Vanilli would have fit into the musical landscape.
@SoopremeBeing I do too..it all came about 6 or 7 months after this skit aired. This skit is from the 1st season..2nd episode..when it all came out...the 2nd season of In Living Color was airing.
and remember! 'DONT FORGET OUR NUMBA!' You guys know that song too right?! LOL this was so good. So sad TV doesn't do anything remotely close to this these days.
@uVueD2b Ironic statement, considering the two of them were breakdancers and one of them, Rob, was the finalist from Germany in a world breakdancing competition in New York in 1984.
i seriously want it
