It's all in the head shape. Muskrat's head is smaller in proportion to the body. When it is hunched like that, muskrat is very round like a ball, and nutria have a huge hump-back due to their back legs being so much longer than their front. Nutria's mouth has large flaring nostrils, surrounded typically by white hair at the front of the mouth. Size too, you could almost cram a muskrat into your coat pocket, but a nutria would be held in your arms like a 20lbs rabbit.
@roberttrump37 really is that what you think is that they dont hurt fish
you obviously dont know much because i did have a great fishing pond with large healthy bass then muskrats moved in and drained 4 feet of water KILLING ALL LARGE FISH bass and catfish
if you dont know dont comment and quit pretending to know what your talking about
@chico644 SHUT up they dont eat fish.. unless thier already dead... and they eat vegation i never said they dont build damns just like beavers or make burrows underwater...
i know they dont eat fish maby if you learned how to read a comment right i clearly stated that they drained he water nobody ever said anything about eating fish plus they dont even build dams beavers are the only animal to do that you probly live in the city and you did a two page report on muskrats in the second grade and now you think you know everything about them you have no idea what you are talking about

How can you tell these apart from a NUTRIA? I have never heard of these until today, but they look the same in the pics I've seen.
