Cable is the son of Cyclops and Madilyn Pryor (A Jean Grey clone) He is more Telekinetic and Telepathic than Jean Grey and perhaps even Professor X himself. -It is said that he is so powerful that if he wasn't constantly using his Telekinetics to keep the Techno-organic virus in check, he would destroy himself.
Nate Grey is literally Cable from another dimension.( Except, in his world he was born without the techno-organic virus.) He is constantly in danger of destroying himself or others...
As everyone else explained, when Cable was a baby/youngling (I forgot exact) Apocalypse managed to infect him with a techno-organic virus which essentially assimilates his entire body and, as the virus consumes it, converting it onto metal, eventually it'll take over him entirely and turn him onto a cyborg.
To prevent that Cable is employing his vast powers to keep the virus nigh-inert (though as you can see it has managed with time to spread sufficiently to take over a portion of his body).
The fact that he can control a virus (we're talking millions upon millions of microscopical objects) is alone a testament to the power Cable posses.
Should he had not been restrained as such, he would've ripped Apocalypse to shreds.
In one of the comics, Cable acknowledges that in the long run he'll lose the war with the virus and his body will be taken over completely to be made servant of Apocalypse. Cable asks Deadpool to vow to kill him before that happens, as he consider it the worst fate.

he can absorb energy / shoot it back, read and talk with his mind, and cant move things as big as a island withhis mind...so yea he's awesome
