@THEdowntowndoll Have you had any luck with finding the whole series? I can't believe I didn't know about the Marathon they ran on PBS! Did you by any chance record it? I really would love to have the series, plus the Anniversary Edition, especially since I've never seen them! Please let me know. Thanks for this video, by the way!
From what I could see on the HBO film, is that they separated because of all the mistresses Bill had and also from being away from his home, which I think he did so because of what u said, about coming home to a big family. I think he was trying to escape from it, even though he loved them..Where can I see the series, I missed the PBS special :(
@fogbuffy LOL! He was in his swim trunks. It was his day off and he came in from the pool. He spent a lot of time swimming and laying out in the sun by the pool on the original reality show...
@digitante Thank you for sharing info about the HBO film. Yes, family and docu-series is truly remarkable. Reminds me of how measured and well-spoken families of my grandfather's generation seemed to be, unlike today, where families and friends and co-workers seem to be more abrasive and rude or shocking in their manner of speech, perhaps never having much of a filter. Bill and Lance loud were very well spoken and Lance was certainly a brilliant and colorful writer from the letter he reads in t
@ellsea1 Wonderful to know you were touched by the Loud family also. This family really sort of attached to my soul in a deep way. I think it is so rare to see a family that communicates to one another in such a respectful way. I would LOOOOVE for PBS to do an update special on the entire family to see what they are up to now...40 years later.
Thanks for posting. I watched the HBO film last night. I think the actors did the Louds justice, though I don't think the film was presented as faithful down to the last detail. In other words, in order to compress the story into less than 2 hours, they had to take liberties. But the marriage deteriorated because of Bill's infidelity to Pat - though, granting one of Lance's dying wishes, they reconciled after his death and continue to live together in Los Angeles. Pretty remarkable family.
I loved every second of this and watched it back to back just recently over Easter too. Can't get enough of Lance Loud. I loved his father to son letter too.I was very moved by it.I wish I knew more about what has happened to them all since. We know about Lance I guess.I didn't like the HBO show. It just doesn't capture the characters at all the same I don't feel. But I suppose if I hadn't known about Cinema Verite I then wouldn't have made sure to tape the screenings of the 12 episodes on PBS.
@thetruegladiator I don't think I still have the divorce scene on my DVR. I deleted most all of the shows I already watched. Maybe PBS will run it again. If I have the scene where Pat confides to her sister how she feels worthless as a woman after she hits her limit with the "thousands" of woman he cheated on her with and over past 5 years before divorce...I will post...but the audio mostly picked up crickets and food sizzling on the grill...so it's very hard to hear conversation...
Thanks for posting this. Im watching the HBO movie right now. To bad I missed the real thing on PBS. I was born in 1973 and I remember my mom telling me about this when I was a teenager.
stupid reason to leave the family, be a man and take the challenges that you made.

PBS just aired An American Family: Anniversary Edition, a 2-hour compilation of key moments in the series. Check your local PBS channel's schedule.

I love Lance, he was the star of the show. Sorry to hear that he died so young.

The clip you are seeing with Lance riding down a Santa Barbara suburban street is the key scene to Lance's living his life on his own terms.

Do you have the "the big scene" in episode 9? Where Bill comes home and gets blindsided.

@333happymuffin Your welcome. I didn't see the HBO film. I wonder if they did the family members justice or simply made caricatures out of them.
