I'm sorry but how did Djimon Hounsou not win. Nothing against Arkin, but Hounsou gave such a powerful and unforgettable performance in Blood Diamond. I wasnt even seeing Djimon Hounsou in the movie. Just Solomon Vandy
Let me say this. I really really really really really wanted Eddie Murphy to win, because I'm such a huge fan of his, and of the movie "Dreamgirls", and he did a great job. However, judging on just best performance alone, it's Jackie Earle Haley all the way. It's not even a contest.
If you all have not seen "Little Children", I urge you to rent it, netfix it, or whatever. JEH's performance in this thing is unreal, I'm serious, it's THAT GOOD!
If the Oscars gave Alan Arkin the award because Eddie Murphy did Norbit after this, I say what the hell. I thought the academy presented the acting categories to who gave the better performance, not who has the better resume. Don't get me wrong, maybe the academy awarded Alan Arkin because they thought he was better than Eddie Murphy, I'm not saying that's not the case, it could be the case. I'm just saying that I would never understand if they awarded Alan Arkin because Eddie made Norbit.
the irony about all of this is that the next year Norbit was nominated for best makeup but lost to La Vie En Rose so maybe the academy just wanted to give the oscar to Arkin for his body of work.
personally I think Mark Wahlberg deserved that oscar. Masterpiece of a performance by him (his best yet) in a masterpiece of a film. I also think Christian Bale deserved a nom for The Prestige.
@Andr913 - LMS, I agree deserved something in a major category, and didn't it get Screenplay, can't remember right now....
Regardless, Arkin was ok, but not better than Eddie Murphy, and no way better than who really had the best performance in this category, Jackie Earle Haley.
well, eddie murphy was suppose to be a shoo in to win the award, but he made an obviously fatal mistake when he released norbit a few weeks before the oscars actually took place. the academy just were not willing to award him for such a peice of shit. does that help you at all? rofl =-)
guarentee you he would have won if they gave him more screen time i think hes hella underrated just watch the movie basketball diaries and youll think he shoulda won this oscar for that movie
Im so proud of Alan Arkin. Even do he wasnt in the movie for that long, his performance was just hillarious and entertaining and well deserved win. Im so glad Eddie Murphy Didnt win <_<, im sorry he just doesnt deserve it plus even after dreamgirls, he still makes bad films. Maybe it is true, doing Norbirt cause him his oscar lol
and may i add, he (murphy) shouldn't have win the globes as well. That globes should have gone to Nicholson (who was overlooked by the oscar that year)
dreamgirls sucked ass!stupid chick flick that no one understood, and had the most mediocre cast ever!if i had to pick two best performances out of the 5 that year, they wud be alan arkin and djimon hounsou.the rest were jus average at best
remeber eddie walked out right after arkin gave his speech? He made some sort of lame excuse why he did but everyone with half a brain knew he was full of shit.
why should eddie murphy be so dissapointed ? His acting is not that amazing , yeah sure hes a funny guy and entertaining to watch , but such people as kate winslet got nominated 5 times for an oscar and didnt win once! Now thats frustrating.
it seems like he will never win the award after he made a comment about how black actors never win the oscar... ironically, that night another oscars went to two black actors (Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson) :-)
The race should have been between Djimon Hounsou and Jackie Earle Haley. I chose Hounsou but would not have disagreed with a win for Haley. As for the other nominees, three totally different actors should have received nominations.
actually i thought 4 one moment Haley could upset cuz in my opinion he deserved to win though i'm pleased Arkin won i loved very much Little Miss Sunshine!
In my humble opinion, Alan Arkin didn't even deserve to be nominated. There were other supporting actors, in Little Miss Sunshine itself, that deserved it more: Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, even Paul Dano. Although I didn't think Eddie Murphy was all that great in Dreamgirls either... Haven't seen Djimon Hounsou, so my guess is that Jackie Earle Haley should've won.
Truly agree on Alan being a million times the actor Eddie is, cynthiacher. I don't know why everyone says that him winning was an upset. Little Miss Sunshine was a WAY better movie than Dreamgirls was.
this was based on performance. i love both dreamgirls and little miss sunshine. eddie murphy's performance does not even compare to alan arkin. arkin is a good actor, but based on this performance, it should have gone to eddie. i actually thought that arkin's performance was the least oscar worthy out of the four.
I know that, genius. The problem was right before the academy awards aired, Norbit hit theaters and gave people the bad side of Eddie Murphy. You don't understand how Hollywood works, buddy. If you're nominated, so what...you're only as good as your last movie, and Norbit was it. It's all about image in Hollywood, and the movie Norbit killed his win. Alan Arkin was good, but not good as Eddie in Dreamgirls.
just because youre black and he is black doesnt mean he has to win. lets talk about performanes and acting career. Can you really compare the quality of acting that arkin has over murphy, please all muprhy films are crappy.
What you are saying is right, but the Oscar is not about a career. It's about who gave the best performance THAT year. And in my opinion I believe the other four nominees were more worthy than Arkin's performance. Many nominees were robbed of an Oscar because of these so called "career" Oscars.
I'm very happy that Alan Arkin won. I had him all the way. But I am sad that Peter O'Toole lost (again). That would of been a more emotional moment than Arkin and Scorsese combined. As what Meatloaf said in his song, "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad."
So glad Arkin won. Murphy was so pissed that he left right after he lost, didn't even stay to see the Dreamgirls musical numbers. That's a fact. Sore loser! Alan Arkin is a million times the actor Murphy is.
newspapers said that eddie murphy stormed out after being so disapointed, and that he and his girlfriend never returned. i dont really believe that, but i would b pissed if i were him, cause he deserves an oscar for his earlier movies.
It seems rather rude that Beyonce and her father, who are sitting so close to the stage, aren't even polite enough to applaud Alan Arkin for his win. It comes across as being quite disrespectful of them. ... I guess I could just be reading far too much into it though. -_-,
Didn't get the joke of it, did you? Its a SUCKER post to get neanderthals like you to say it wasn't one word. Thanks for proving me right. Never fails. Ga'Day!
Maybe they didn't FEEL like clapping. The same George Clooney didn't clap nor get up on his feet (WHEN THE REST OF THE CROWD DID) for Monique when she BEAT OUT HIS TWO COSTARS for the Oscar this past year.
And, while I'm sure that shows solidarity for his co-stars in the case of Mo'nique & George Clooney, it still appears that he's being rude by not congratulating someone for their win... the same holds true for Beyonce & her father. They might be upset that their friends didn't win, but, it's just petty not to applaud because "you don't feel like it". I imagine the reasons behind attending an award show are to show your support. Still, televised childishness is what it is.
Eddie left the award right after this. Reason why you don't see him during the Dreamgirls performance or when Jennifer Hudson won her award...I guess it's understandable? I personally think he shouldn't have left but whatever...yay for Grandpa winning!
Murphy took it awfully well considering he just got owned. It's not THAT big an upset, or even should be one considering the roles as I would have made Arkin favourite anyway disregarding the SAG and the Golden Globes. But it's an upset nonetheless, and I doubt Eddie will ever have such a chance again.
Does anyone honestly believe this was given for Alan Arkin's performance? It was a "death to Murphy" gesture, plain and simple.
