@JWade29 Thanks, Bro. I was living in Michigan in the 80's and I remember watching Midsouth @ 8pm / EST on Fridays nights followed by NWA. Freakin awesome ! So much better than this circus garbage being peddled out of New York. The entire world seems to buy into the WWE mass media style and it just doesn't hold a candle to the Passionate " regional " enthusiasm of the fans from the 80's. oh well. Dems the times we live in.
I always liked the pop the Midnight Express gets when they win the belts back, i can still remember, nobody i knew wanted the Fantastics to beat the Midnights.
LOVED this match. Awesome all the way to the end, just like the NWA. 88, the last great year of wrestling for me. They still cared more about the wrestling than gimmicks, and Vince was going the other way.
@DojoEDM TNA still manages to keep SOME (and i'm pressuring that word) prestige on their tag titles, but that's only because they have some of the greatest tag teams in the world right now.. WWE has sort of stripped themselves of that ability of tag-team wrestling, but they love to randomly put people in tag-matches, but they have a real problem putting together teams
yes I agree the fantastics were Fabulous ones ripoff but if u notice that version of the Midnight express is a different one as the original and this one has Stan Lane formerly of the Fabulous ones
@kimv020887 Not quite, they edit the hell out of everything over there, you will not hear things like this classic entrance music, they edit in pre-recorded fan reactions, edit out matches of wrestler's who are not in favor(*cough*BENOIT*cough*),amongst other horrible butchering tactics.
I heard Tully Blanchard in a shoot say if you want to make 20 million dollars listen to Dusty and have us wrestle the opening match against Sting and Nikita Koloff. If you want to make 100 million dollars you have us defend the tag titles later on in the show against the Road Warriors with a real finish not a draw. They wrestled the first match against Sting/Nikita to a 29 min draw and only grossed 20 million.
I was always surprised that Stan Lane never became a HUGE singles star. He looked like a freakin' model, was a great worker, and was great on the mic.
there is no tag team in the sport today that can touch a team like this...hell teams then anderson&blanchar....the rock -n-roll express.....the road warriors...rude and fernandez...those teams are timeless
@CinemaEpic ....how can u begin to ut the mcmg in the same catagory with the midnight express and the teams such as blanchard and anderson...even the mcmg would say hell no
All these years I'd always thought that Jason Mewes was Bobby Eaton's dad. The fantastics imho were never that good, mid-carders at best. The Midnight Express were the real deal in any form, tho I have a preference for the original team.
@McMahonHater Actually, a lot of folx consider a great deal of Dusty's act a bit of a blend of Superstar Graham, (minus the physique, obviously haha) and Thunderbolt Patterson.
That Luger fued was awesome. And no you didn't! HAHA, the 6 man titles, jeez, those belts were stupid. I think Zenk had more upside as a single star, WCW screwed him though.
It's too bad that not long after this the NWA/WCW starting phasing out teams like the ME, Freebirds, and the LOD. They relied on dipshit teams like The Dynamic Dudes, The Southern Boys, and Tom Zenk and Brian Pillman.Of course the more southern companies (NWA, UWF) owned the mid to late '80's with the AWA and World Class (or USWA) being right behind them.
Zenk on his own may have been pretty good since he acutally won a singles title in the NWA/WCW (TV championship), but with Pillman all he ever did was win the US tag titles and the worthless 6 man championship. Pillman was a disappointment. All he did in the NWA was feud with Luger in late '89 and Flair in early '91 never beating either one. The other two teams (Southern Boys, Dynamic Dudes) were just a flavor of the month. Shane Doulas at least made something of himself in ECW
@nomad2746 Man, how can you say Pillman did nothing? He was only a part of one the greatest unsung tag teams in history, The Hollywood Blondes. Flyin' Brian and Stunning Steve were so popular, in fact, too popular, because they were heels and being cheered everywhere, the WCW brass broke them up. In my opinion they were one of the top 5 teams ever.
@BassFace2008 Seriously? Pillman was given plenty of shots during '89-'91to make something of himself and he failed to do so. The Hollywood Blondes were good, but Pillman was just riding on Austin's popularity. Look @ what Pillman did in the WWF:started some "feud" with Austin that didn't amount to much. At least Austin has done something with himself everywhere he's wrestled.
@nomad2746 Ill give you a thumbs up for your point. But look at Austin in WCW. He should have been bigger than what he even was there. And Pillman was never used properly in WWE. You cannot always blame the worker for their failures. My opinion is that Pillman NEVER was used in the right manner by Vince. He was thrown into the Hart Foundation, and the fued with Austin was handled terribly. I dont think Pillman's in ring ability, AND charisma can ever be questioned.
@BassFace2008 True about Austin. Even then when he was relatively new he should've been bigger in WCW. But WCW was still pushing their established wrestlers like Flair, Luger, Sting, and Ricky Steamboat. I don't think WCW was ready for such new blood to take over. Imagine the whole NwO story line playing out with Hollywood Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin? WWF never would have had a chance.
@BassFace2008 Yeah, Pillman was never used correctly or at all during his short WWF career. I never doubted his in ring ability. I could never accept him as a heel though. Even when he grew a goatee to look tougher it wasn't convincing. It's sad that he just kind of faded away and then wasn't heard about again until he died.
@nomad2746 Pillman failed to make something of himself from '89-91? Umm, if that was true, Pillman would have been gone before the Dynamic Dudes left NWA/WCW. The only reason he never got over as much as he should have is because he was a young handsome babyface who guys didn't like, but females crushed on & kids thought was awesome.
@wrestlemaniac82 My opinion. But I ask: What did he actually do? Read my earlier posts. What I put is pretty much how I feel. Other than winning the US tag titles, and riding on Austin's coattails, he didn't amount to much. Yeah, he was cute and jumped off the top rope a lot, but that was about it.
@nomad2746 I'll tell you. First, he brought non-heavyweight wrestling (cruiserweights, light-heavyweights, jr. heavyweights, or whatever term each company went by) back in the 90s. His matches with Jushin "Thunder" Liger were epic. Too bad, WCW didn't capitalize on them. Also, Pillman held his own with Austin. If you watch most Hollywood Blonds promos, Brian on the mike was gold. Some may even say Austin rode Pillman's coattails.
@BassFace2008 Like you, in no order: Arn Anderson&Tully Blanchard, any combination of the Freebirds, the Road Warriors in their younger days, the Midnight Express, and Mark& Jay Youngblood.
@nomad2746 Freebirds were great, but I never thought of them as great tag combos as much as a phenomonal stable. I do think Pillman was an awesome heel tho, at least the 'loose cannon' gimmick. Although I do agree tryin to be a total baddass was the wrong way to go. But just being unpredictable and insane was perfect. L O D are definately up there too, but Demolition topped them for me because they were the first truly 'scary' team. Plus Fugi would kick Ellering's ass Lol
@BassFace2008 When I first saw Demolition, they scared me...& they were faces when I started watching wrestling. But to say they top the Road Warriors, well I'll ask you this: Did Demolition ever use their spikes as a weapons like LOD used theirs on Dusty? Side note: Ellering could give Fuji a good fight, but I'll side with you on Fuji winning. Gorilla didn't call him the devious one for nothing.
@wrestlemaniac82 You have a great point there too. Was just something about the way they walked to the ring that just incited fear, and LOD was flippin great, dont get me wrong. Another one of those, just MY opinion.
@BassFace2008 It's all good my friend. At least, it was kick butt to see them wrestle together, although it was never just Ax & Smash vs. Hawk & Animal.
@nomad2746 I thought about Arn and Tully, but had to go with Arn and Larry over Tully. I dont really have a concrete reason for it, except I remember being completely captivated by the Dangerous Alliance, and Zbyszko was just such a stoic badass. Didnt say much, but kicked so much ass.
@PhenomAJ Brian Pillman and Tom Zenk was a fantastic tag-team. The NWA was known to have great, classic tag-team matches. It is sad that wrestling today don't have that many great tag-teams except The Eliminators, MCMG, The Dudleys, The Hardys and Edge and Christan.
Damnn I miss the NWA, UWF, WCCW, and the AWA. The REAL wrestling shows. The WWF was a circus act compared to them back then. The Horsemen, Freebirds, Von Erich's, Russians, Missy Hyatt and The First Family. Oh yeaH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is the Midnight Express' entrance music on this clip and the home video different that it is on the WWE 24/7 version of Bash 88? On the WWE 24/7 version the Midnight Express comes into the crappy music like on TBS studios matches. Did WWE go back and change the music? Was there a copyright conflict with the Midnight Express' original music???
This isn't the Scorsese version, this is the version that allegedly Bobby Eaton created in house. Midnight Express videos without the Chase theme should never exist.
All of that has been changed by the WWE. Midnight Express used the Chase theme from the movie Midnight Express for years. Around the time of this video, JCP/WCW started making "generic" versions of the entrance songs like this one and the Road Warriors new "almost Iron Man" theme. This is the music they used for the rest of their career. WWE changes almost all of the music on its DVDs and 24-7 releases to avoid future copyright issues I'm sure.
@bullfranthrow Jim Cornette put out a book detailing the history of the Midnights and there's photos of then and now. Dennis looks ancient, Stan's hair is thinning so he looks terrible, but Bobby looks almost the same. They've done a few reunion shows in recent years and I even have a friend who wrestled a match against Bobby in OSW out of Kentucky.
Man did I hate the Fantastics...In Mid-South, they beat everyone-Hayes and Gordy, Dibiase and Williams, Jake the Snake and One Man Gang. The kids loved em and girls squealed...But face it, this was great stuff. Cornette was a God
This is back when tag teams were truely great and a part of the show. Too bad we dont get classics like this anymore. Jim Cornette is a genius manipulator of the crowd. Great stuff!
a comment about the themes. Performing rights organizations started asking for rights fees for using those entrance songs. The companies didn't want to pay so they "composed" their own songs avoiding paying copyright fees.
I always felt like the midnight rockers/rockers were based more on the Fantastics than say the rock n roll express. MNE and the Fantastics had feuds dating back to WCCW in Texas maybe even further back than that. Both of these teams are legends in wrestling history
I'd imagine they were influenced by both of them to some degree, but I do find it interesting that Sean Michaels was taken under the wing of Ricky Morton while he was a rookie in Mid-South. Michaels even had tights like R&R when he debuted as a rookie. And he was inspired to go into wrestling while growing up in San Antonio, where Ricky Morton had been one of his favorites teaming with Ken Lucas.
Midnight/Fantastics feud started in Mid-South summer 84, resumed in WCCW around Dec 84/Jan 85
The mistake of some that post are they have no idea of wrestling history, Bobby Eaton was one of the best tag team wrestlers ever, a original high flyer, though lacked Mike skills, Jim Cornette was, and still is a major promoter of wrestlers, Stan lane as well was one of the best tag team wrestlers.
I love how old school themes like that of the Midnight Express had those real long lead-ins and the song didn't really "hit" until the wrestlers got to the ring; perfect for those1/4 mile walks to the ring! lol
Yeah, I think they were all doing that in JCP/NWA/WCW at this point. It was right about this time I think when everyone got new themes (except maybe Flair, though they might have doctored his too).
I love the real "chase theme from Midnight Express" that they used to use, but this remake is cool too. I much preferred the real Iron Man to the fake one though. The Fantastics should always come to "Sharp Dressed Man" or at least some ZZ Top song. I never got into their generic theme.
Think The Miz & Morrison without the trash talking. You wanted to see some tag team wrestling, these guys could do it. They just never made it to the WWF or got a major run in WCW.
A great team. You should try to find more of their matches. They're best known for Mid-South/UWF and World Class where they were one of the best teams ever, plus they had this run in NWA/WCW that gave them a couple of runs with the US Tag Titles and some great matches, many with the Midnight Express.
Try looking on Youtube for "fantastics vs sheepherders" of "link rogers fulton vs sting gilbert tatum". I know there are a few more. That is some UWF stuff from them.
Midnight Express, Rock N Roll Express, Arn and Tully, Road Warriors, the Koloffs, the Steiners, the Freebirds...Tag wrestling in the NWA certainly did not suck back then in either federation...holding tag titles really meant something back then
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nwa had great singles wrestlers but there tag teams sucked and were garbage. Midnight Express, Rock N ROll Express, The Freebirds sucked no where near as good as Hart Foundation, The Rockers or the British Bulldogs.
You sir could not be more fucking wrong. I don't think I've ever read such an erroneous YouTube comment in my life. As good as the WWE Tag teams were in the 80's they almost couldn't touch the A teams of the NWA.
I can listen to Cornette all day. He, Bobby Heenan, Fred Blassie, and the Grand Wizard were the best managers when it came to their mic work and charisma
My favorite Midnight Express match was the one against the Samoan Swat team at Clash of the Champions '88. A lot of great tag teams back in the day. Tag team wrestling is downright pathetic right now.
it was short because when the commercial video was released, it was clipped for time constraints. i remeber watching a copy of this loaned to me by a buddy who got it off satallite feed and the match was way longer than what was released on VHS.(i know this because i have the version released on VHS by Turner Home Entertainment.) This was a common practice at the time to keep wrestling videos to a 90 min-2HR release. (at least for NWA tapes)
The Four Horsemen, The Midnight Express, the Rock' n roll Express, Nikita, Sting, The Road Warriors, The Varsity Club: such an astounding line-up. It's a crime the NWA didn't beat the WWF in those days.
lol Jim Cornett was a fucking riot ! Great ring presence! Made the show. How many of you remember the Mulkey's ? I remember how he Hyped them up & game them a title shot & they won because of Magnum TA & Dusty Rhodes. Anyone got that old clip ?
The MX was great and the Fantastics were a good foil. If I'm not mistake they had so many titles because the NWA World & Tag Champs traveled to different territories. Crocket was the highest profile, but you had Florida, Mid Atlantic and Texas(World Class) to name a few. So for TV & house shows the NWA Champs couldn't make, they'd have the US Tag & Hvwt, TV and six man to give the crowd some sort of title matches and main events.

Was there a copyright conflict with the Midnight Express' original music???
rmc29615 2 years ago
Answer is song is written by
giorgio moroder (midnight express) theme for the Scorcese movie Midnight Express...
And Vince would have to pay Giorgio and Scorcese.
I agree with you i hate when WWE loses copyrights (like with another one bites the dust for JYD)
exusninja 2 years ago
Actually, Scorsese didn't make the film. It was written by Oliver Stone and directed by Alan Parker (who also directed Mississippi Burning)
This version shouldn't be copy written, given that WCW jazzed it up... But oh well.
lawrence142002 2 years ago
This isn't the Scorsese version, this is the version that allegedly Bobby Eaton created in house. Midnight Express videos without the Chase theme should never exist.
PhenomAJ 2 years ago
All of that has been changed by the WWE. Midnight Express used the Chase theme from the movie Midnight Express for years. Around the time of this video, JCP/WCW started making "generic" versions of the entrance songs like this one and the Road Warriors new "almost Iron Man" theme. This is the music they used for the rest of their career. WWE changes almost all of the music on its DVDs and 24-7 releases to avoid future copyright issues I'm sure.

@AngryDave113 where have you seen him?
bullfranthrow 1 year ago

Great stuff!
wdereb1979 2 years ago 4
a comment about the themes.

Both of these teams are legends in wrestling history
vrtrop 3 years ago
I'd imagine they were influenced by both of them to some degree, but I do find it interesting that Sean Michaels was taken under the wing of Ricky Morton while he was a rookie in Mid-South. Michaels even had tights like R&R when he debuted as a rookie. And he was inspired to go into wrestling while growing up in San Antonio, where Ricky Morton had been one of his favorites teaming with Ken Lucas.
Midnight/Fantastics feud started in Mid-South summer 84, resumed in WCCW around Dec 84/Jan 85
mamacornettesmoney 2 years ago
The mistake of some that post are they have no idea of wrestling history, Bobby Eaton was one of the best tag team wrestlers ever, a original high flyer, though lacked Mike skills, Jim Cornette was, and still is a major promoter of wrestlers, Stan lane as well was one of the best tag team wrestlers.

I love how old school themes like that of the Midnight Express had those real long lead-ins and the song didn't really "hit" until the wrestlers got to the ring; perfect for those1/4 mile walks to the ring! lol

Just wish I could find the Fantastics theme somewhere. I have the Midnight Express one.
Sounded like the Fantastics theme was not a real song and was something produced by NWA/WCW
dansaint2249 3 years ago
Yeah, I think they were all doing that in JCP/NWA/WCW at this point. It was right about this time I think when everyone got new themes (except maybe Flair, though they might have doctored his too).
I love the real "chase theme from Midnight Express" that they used to use, but this remake is cool too. I much preferred the real Iron Man to the fake one though. The Fantastics should always come to "Sharp Dressed Man" or at least some ZZ Top song. I never got into their generic theme.

Who the hell are the Fantastics?

Think The Miz & Morrison without the trash talking. You wanted to see some tag team wrestling, these guys could do it. They just never made it to the WWF or got a major run in WCW.

A great team. You should try to find more of their matches. They're best known for Mid-South/UWF and World Class where they were one of the best teams ever, plus they had this run in NWA/WCW that gave them a couple of runs with the US Tag Titles and some great matches, many with the Midnight Express.
mamacornettesmoney 2 years ago 3
Cool, i'll see if I can find more of their matches.

Try looking on Youtube for "fantastics vs sheepherders" of "link rogers fulton vs sting gilbert tatum". I know there are a few more. That is some UWF stuff from them.

Its amazing how short matches were back then. Seemed a lot longer when it was all the way live
suspekt29 3 years ago
it was short because when the commercial video was released, it was clipped for time constraints. i remeber watching a copy of this loaned to me by a buddy who got it off satallite feed and the match was way longer than what was released on VHS.(i know this because i have the version released on VHS by Turner Home Entertainment.) This was a common practice at the time to keep wrestling videos to a 90 min-2HR release. (at least for NWA tapes)
wpgniceguy 3 years ago
The Four Horsemen, The Midnight Express, the Rock' n roll Express, Nikita, Sting, The Road Warriors, The Varsity Club: such an astounding line-up. It's a crime the NWA didn't beat the WWF in those days.

are you talking about the monkeys from the nwa they were a job tag team, right or was that their name
nwauwf 3 years ago
The MX was great and the Fantastics were a good foil. If I'm not mistake they had so many titles because the NWA World & Tag Champs traveled to different territories. Crocket was the highest profile, but you had Florida, Mid Atlantic and Texas(World Class) to name a few. So for TV & house shows the NWA Champs couldn't make, they'd have the US Tag & Hvwt, TV and six man to give the crowd some sort of title matches and main events.
