  • I recall multiple studies which supported the idea that MPS improved with quality protein absorbtion sooner after(or even during) resistance training. This however didn't apply as much to ppl who were overactive for long periods of time afterward. Especially effective when protein is leucine enriched.

  • where do you draw the line though? 1 day is just an arbitrary period of time. could one have the same success eating once ever 2.25 days, once every 3.87 days etc, but consuming the same monthly cals/macros? surely there has to be a point where that no longer is the case

  • So does this only apply to protein? Or carbs and fats as well. If you were to have all your carbs and fats in one meal, your body's gonna digest and absorb it all?

  • Let's say you eat once a day at a buffet, the right amount of macros and micros for yourself. I just have a hard time believing that one could be just as successful in bodybuilding doing that than spacing out meals.

  • @InferiorThanYou "Hard time believing it". That's called an argument from personal incredulity ie "it sounds unreasonable so it is incorrect". I personally wouldn't do well on one meal per day but it works fantastically for some people and the scientific evidence is quite clear in demonstrating that it simply doesn't matter how many meals one eats per day.

  • @LiftingForLife hey dude, i heard jay cutler say that he eats like 24/7 like he will wake up to eat so he can get his nutrients more spaced out. whats the deal with that?

  • @christian9418 To be perfectly honest I very highly doubt that he actually does that. However, I'm not Jay or Jay's wife lol so I don't really know.

  • Does this mean that you might as well could take whey protein before bed instead of casein?

  • @klasanders Sure, if you want.

  • Awesome

  • Ian, can you please help me? I am currently doing a personal training course, and one of my teachers who is I believe a nutritionist, claims the 30g figure as scientific gospel, and claims you will piss the rest out. Please give me some research which support your claims in this video, as the class didn't take me seriously when I argued with him, I have already taken some of the research posted in your post workout myths.

  • great fucking vid!!

  • I would just like to know the science behind this and u might have mentioned it, im sry if i missed it but is protein a "thermogenic food" and is the thermogenic food theory really true?

  • what do you think if i use t3 for my next cut?

  • Do you feel that many of the myths created are because of the supplement companies spewing out bullshit to increase sales?

  • @THExxxMEANxxxCRITIC Absolutely.

  • How did you come up with the number 17,500 calories? Thanks for another informative video. There is a study showing that anabolic window thing is crap, but I can't remember it

  • If you get hungry even though you've ate a big meal just a few hours ago does that mean your body has used up all the nutrients and therefore needs more food? Also, what if you've already covered your deaily intake from the previous meal(s)?

Secondly; what does hunger really represent in terms of nutritional needs?

Surely people with high metabolism would benefit more from spacing out all the meals throughout the day?

  • @YourAverageHater Great question.

  • so hypothetically if I eat a whole turkey at breakfast, it will be absorbed and used to build muscle instead of being converted to fat?

  • @omreg123 Correct. Is is extraordinarily rare for protein to be stored to fat.

  • @LiftingForLife you have talked about the law of thermodynamics and the theory of energy conversion. though this reply makes no sense... if you eat 1000 calories more than you need, it does not matter where they come from, they will be converted to fat. Say all you eat for 2 weeks is fat-free proteins shakes, for 4000 calories and your body only needs 2000. Those excess 2000 will be converted to fat. I am sorry to say but you are very inconsistent with your replies...

  • @emouch1 I am not inconsistent. In normal situations an excess of protein is converted to blood glucose and that blood glucose is either oxidized or stored as glycogen. What actually get stored as body fat is the dietary fat one consumes. The process of converted protein to carbs and then carbs to bodyfat is quite complex and very rarely occurs to a significant degree in humans.

  • @LiftingForLife Thanks for the reply. So you mean that a 2000 calorie surplus even if it comes for protein will not be converted to fat? Sorry but you are absolutely wrong here. And what do you mean only dietary fat converts to body fat? Of course not, carb surplus will also be converted to fat. Any surplus of calories will be converted to fat, though there are different physiological pathways for this conversion for carbs, fats and proteins.

  • @emouch1 "So you mean that a 2000 calorie surplus even if it comes for protein will not be converted to fat? Sorry but you are absolutely wrong here."

No, I never said nor implied that. Please reread my posts to avoid putting words in my mouth in the future.

  • @LiftingForLife

But small meals are better and healthy, right? That's what the research shows.

  • @multiplebrain Show me said research please.

  • You can tell this kid is very intelligent

  • @phaquetoob Thanks.

  • As much as i find the twins funny as fuk, this guy actually is smart and is good at presenting his knowledge. keep it up brah

  • then why do you eat such a big post-workout meal

  • very informing

  • But why would they say 30g? If they'd said 50g, they could charge more per serving and make more money.

  • make a video about smoking and bodybuilding!

  • Do you have any evidence for any of this? It makes far more sense to claim that supplement companies make their protein serving sizes 25-30g due to these studies, as opposed to the supplement companies funding the studies just to make money. It sounds like conspiracy bull shit. You're essentially attacking almost every view on diet in the bodybuilding and lifting world , and without the evidence or research to back what you are saying, you come off as not credible and amateur.

  • @Defrath What "studies"?

  • @LiftingForLife Where do you get your evidence from?

  • @waveymofo Evolutionary biology.

  • @Defrath I like the studies you provided to contradict him, will subscribe to you now.

    loljk ur a phag

  • I remember this was one of the first questions I asked in my Nutrition class in college. I got the same information. Thank you so much for uploading this because not a lot of people believe me.

  • Okay Ian, listen up man. Yesterday, I took your advice and ended up farting for 8 hours + straight with stinky ass farts man. You're telling me your body can synthesize infinite amounts of protein? Dude my stomach hurts like a bitch man, can you please tell me what's going on??

  • @solarwile hey m8, eating alot of proteins makes your shit hard, in non sientific terms.

So you need alot of fiber to keep that shit loose, or you might have a hard time in the bathroom my friend.

Eat alot of veggies, and whole grain foods, with a high protein diet, it's as simple as that.

The farts only mean your body isent use to that much food at once

  • What about a persons metabolism? Like myself, I have a fast metabolism so I never tend to gain weight, right now im eating about 4-5k calories (bulking), should i also increase my protein intake? I heard that one reason peoples metabolism changes is do to phenotype variations in their intestines/lumen? (not sure) like me, i would say i am an ectomorph.

  • @ismael1300 That sounds like complete nonsense to be honest.

  • @LiftingForLifeWhat part?I said i wasn't sure but i thought the small intestines which absorbs nutrients is responsible for the amount of nutrients that person absorbs (proteins, fats, vitamins ect). its OBVIOUS that some people have different metabolisms, right?so would that account for their small intestines size?(bc it is responsible)i think u said that people should consume about a gram of protein or so for every pound you weigh, my question is,due to MY metabolism is more protein neccesary?

  • @ismael1300 No.

  • @LiftingForLife Thanks, subscribed :)

  • @ismael1300 No problem sir.

  • interestin view on comsuming macros

  • For people who are not as disciplined as you are I would reccomedn eating meals more frequently just to help with calorie control by reducing snacks between meals

  • nice vid dude. one of my role models is greg plitt. and i subscribed to his his website. and he too talks about this.. very informative too and free lol

  • there's no wrong or wright answer, space your meals out...or don't...just get it in one sit in.

  • thanks a lot man, u made my everyday life much easier after explaining this subject! until today, I was so crazy cuz worry about 3 hours period food intake and cuz of worry about protein per meal.

keep with the videos, cheers from croatia.

  • There are so many brainwashed people here. I too was like this, manipulated by the supplement companies, until I read Alan Aragon and the logic surrounding the Paleolithic Diet. As long as you mind your macro nutrient requirements daily, it doesn't matter! Lastly, consider that taking frequent meals throughout the day, also causes an abnormal amount of insulin spikes, as I understand it.

  • @badmaxx Your insulin comment is backward... eating frequent meals throughout the day keeps insulin from spiking it doesn't cause it to spike -

  • Good info

  • You seem very confident, if it's true it really is kind of revolutionary for most of us who do the 30 grams of protein per meal thing. I would love to see you do a follow up video where you shoot down some of the arguments brought up here in the comments section.

  • haven't we evolved since the hunter/gatherers?

  • I'm starting to wonder if protein powder is bullshit too? and how are "ignorant" "stupid" people suppose to find the real truth? I think eating 4-5 meals a day is good however... Ian how does your diet look like?

  • @LiftingForLife Awesome video, you present it as it is!

The overall intake - expendeture is going to dictate if you loose or gain weight.

I'v myself gone on this rediculus 6 meals/day for 10 weeks, and it doesnt do any bit of diffrance on MBR.

However, the only posetive aspect of 6 meals/day is that you fool yourself, you can eat whenever you get hungry and it feels better. It's alot! more work but some people find it easier to control their hunger that way.

At the end of the day, it's up to y

  • @strukelj

Not all research is created equal. There is a ton of garbage out there. Just because a study shows this or that, doesn't make it valid. The study can be done poorly or conclusions can be wrong. Each study must be looked at in detail.

And good studies agree with Ian, for now. We'll have to wait and see if something new pops up on the matter.

    @WestlundFitness

Wait wut? Bodybuilders want to achieve the physique our ancestors had?

  • @Archangel591 That's... not at all what he said, in fact he meant the opposite. Derp.

  • you bulking?

  • @LiftingForLife That's cool and all but your bf has got pretty high from the looks of it, maybe it's time to cut? Clean bulking is a good solution to gain lean mass without gaining too much fat, what is your thoughts on CB.

  • @strukelj No, I'm not saying that at all, nor did I imply it. This has never been a question of overall food intake, it's been a question of meal frequency. You are wasting my time with irrelevant deflections.

  • I'm not arguing with you as you are far more knowledgable than I am on this stuff... but i dont think the question is whether or not eating frequently is necessary for life. You're one hundred percent correct that our ancestors lived with eating one meal maybe not even, in a day. However, did they have the physique that bodybuilders want to achieve? I'm not trying to troll or argue, just thought I'd make that point.

  • the way i eat is the same way u r explaining on the clip,it works for me,i am getting stronger all the time,i tell people the same thing,,mostly my friends, don't worry about the timing on meals and protein,it isn't going to make an difference in strength or growth

  • @strukelj Please message me peer-reviewed empirical research that demonstrates conclusively that higher meal frequency directly increases BMR or TEF. Thank you.

  • Keep your videos at a max of 5 minutes please. This is perfect.

  • @strukelj I did a video on meal frequency that discusses the fact that meal frequency does not dictate BMR or TEF and that video is heavily supported by relevant references. Good day.

  • @strukelj Post research supporting your claims - I'll give you a hint: you can't, because said research simply doesn't exist.

  • You are borderline implying that there are no benefits to eating said amounts of food either once a day, or spread out. This is incorrect. Yes humans back in the day only ate once a day at times, but there life expectancy was also much shorter. If what you're saying is correct, then in theory if are stomach could handle it, we could all eat one giant meal in the morning and be as proficient as someone who ate their meals spread out, which isn't the case.

  • @strukelj I'm not just implying it, I am explicitly stating that it is true - because it is.

  • @LiftingForLife your completely wrong, if that was the case then servely obese people could survive on just water for weeks, this is not the case. There is only so much protein the body can ingest over a certain amount of time because the nitrate group on amino acids is toxic which is why it is converted to bile and removed. Yes amino acids will cycle in the blood for hours but not days. If you want to talk about biochemistry like your informed you might want to actually study it.

  • @SkillerJ0el There is research on obese people going almost a year without any food without any negative health effects.

Suffice to say everything you said is wrong lol, there isn't really another way to put it

  • broshake bros thumbing down the video. Enjoy you shake meatheads.

  • So true. How the hell else would people years ago build really good bodies yet didn't happen to take shakes/protein every two hours?lol

  • Good video

  • I actually believe Layne Norton's theory is correct as he backs it up quite nicely and there is a bit of research in his favor. Also have you seen is latest study about bcaa's? He was correct about protein synthesis being elevated between meals through bcaa supplementation.

  • WTF do you mean thousands of hundreds of years ago that food was not readily available to humans all the time? if anything they ate more then than now....we probably constantly were eating then...berries,bugs, small game, fruit, etc. Life was simple then, eat, hunt, sleep. Our primal selves were probably 100x more fit than most of us now.

  • @FrostR3b0rn Are you serious? Man use to have to hunt for food and was lucky to eat once per day; unlike today where you can go to burger king and get a triple cheese burger.

  • @Farve4ever589

Survival of the fittest. Do you think we got to where we are today being lazy fat fucks? No, we AT ONE POINT were the ultimate gatherer/hunter.

  • @FrostR3b0rn no, just...no please learn history before you even talk. Or hell go out into the woods for just a day without any modern technology and let us know how much u were able to eat.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've heard and seen human beings didn't live to long hundreds and thousands of years ago compared to now... I wonder why ???

  • @Wickedsinner5 I hope your joking, we have made countless medical advancements since then.

  • i believe in this idea. i think scooby is bullshiter only keep doing your thing man you rock !!!!!11

  • ive done 2 to 3 meals a day and ive done the 6 small meals a day..when ive eaten alot of protein in one go,i just shit it all out, plays real havok on my guts..if your stinking i think thats a clear indication that youve eaten to much and your body just hasnt absorbed it properly! with small meals more often the biggest thing is i have way more energy..no bloating or discomfort whatsoever..easy to loose weight to.big meals you just wanna take a nap after! you feel like shit!

  • @boneTHUGS111

That's all well and good for you, but honestly that sounds like a personal issue of preference... there are plenty of people who get the exact opposite effect. The point of the video wasn't to say that you should eat 2-3 times but rather that you should do whatever you want (which you are), so I'm not sure what your disagreement is.

  • You eat 6 times a day but you don't poop 6 times a day. Protein is absorbed slowly as it passes through the intestines.

Wether the body has the ability to stop protein absorption once it's demnads are met and does so I have no idea.

Ideally you'd want to slow down the absorption to match the rate at wich your muscle uses the protein. This is where eating 6 small meals helps.

  • great vid bro, why don't you do a kinda 3 month transformation to promote your channel and show us the result of years of trainings?

  • Subscribed man. This is no BS

  • hey great videos keep up the great work!!..by the way I assume you have family in Ireland or have you ever lived there??

  • Great video, keep up the good work enlightening people that are still believing in those ridiculious myths etc. I unsubscribed from scoobyworkshop because of nonsenses he talked.

  • @wycka001 Thank you :)

  • What would your your videos the best they could be would be a link in the description to sources to read more about it.

  • Calories in vs Calories burned... that's what it's all about!

  • @dbrown251 Spot on.

  • hey do u guys have like a nutrition plan to dl or something?

  • Comment removed

  • good info, still if you eat many meals it probably helps your body not to go hungry/catabolic. But I dont know say someone would eat one meal a day with all necessary nutrients and do this for a long time the body would probably adapt to this regimen and not go too catabolic.

  • If high protein per sitting isn't properly absorbed...

Then we could enjoy buffet without worrying about getting fat...!

Good info...! Enjoyed most of your vids... :)

  • This guy! This deserves 863000000 views, not 863

  • Are your answers based on Scientific proof or observations?

  • Ian is the man

  • Liked, Favorated... I always say this but I would just get patronised and looked down on. because i eat 70g of protein in a meal... great video!

  • can't like this enough

  • Very good video..Awesome info. Lyle MCDonlad Style! grats bro! keep up the good work.

  • @liftingforlife very valid points

  • @johnny. Our lives are naturally divided into 24hr days. It's easy to arrange things around that. Eat stop eat is an if protocol where you eat one day, fast one day, and so on. Now, if you take it to ridiculous extremes, then we'll you're on your own.

  • hey man enjoy your videos and i posted this earlier but couldnt find where it went so im posting again. but any chance you can do a video on abs training? would be good to hear your persspective on it. exercise choice/reps/sets/ how often to train them etc.

  • bro you need to write a book.greetings from mexico

  • Ian = Consistent ACCURATE information. Great job, again.

  • If timing/spacing is irrelevant, where does the 24 hour figure come from? If my daily cal intake is 3500, could I consume 10,500 calories one day and then eating nothing for 2 days and get the same results?

  • this video is amazing

  • awesome vid, LOVE it so happy to hear this was misinformation, always had a feeling it was fucking bullshit that a whole meal dissapeared in about 3 hours lol

  • thnx 4 the info bro..always great vidz

  • 1:23 - "Oh, you shouldn't have!"

  • Well damn I was unaware I was totally following the bro's on this topic! Any thoughts or video about the whole 1 meal p/day "fasting" idea?

  • Ian thanks for the good info!

video ideas.......workout programs, 5/3/1, layne nortons power hypertrophy (which i found to be the best results for me). Would be intresting to get your thought. U da man.

  • I can't even imagine how massive my dumps would be if I ate 17,000 calories worth of food.

  • Great video bro, short and to the point.

  • Thanks Ian, you did a video about my question hahahaha. Now how about the thing that i heard many times in many places and videos that you have to consume carbs same time you consume your protein shake to be able to transport it to your muscles and even digesting it in the first place. I've heard some people say "if you drink protein shake and dont include carbs, its just gonna lie in your stomach" ?

  • @Jokk3asd Whoever told you that is retarded. You don't see see wolves eating gummy bears and bread in order to digest their prey.

  • Solid video, thanks again.

  • Awesome video Ian! Good info.

  • ohh my god i love your videos :) <3

  • What about the leucine threshold for MPS? How much of an effect do you think it would have?

  • @cerealkilla4eva Nvm just saw the ending...

  • Ian you can fuck my bitch

  • @sinz187 Is she hot?

  • @LiftingForLife She will be when her lapband is removed

  • @sinz187 Does she even lift?

  • if I eat fewer meals a day, even if they are big meals, I will feel hungry a few hours after a meal. with more smaller meals throughout the day I don't feel hungry.

also I get really sleepy after having a big meal.

so eating many smaller meals a day is definately better than eating few big ones

  • @CIarKent Your definitely entitled to your opinion, but no need to make hasty generalizations about everyone when something is only applicable to you. One person can easily say 3 big meals provides them with more satiety as well as well as more energy. It all boils down to personal preference and nothing else.

  • @CIarKent yeah but thats not really the point of the video.

the point is stop obsessing over the amount of macros you consumer over that time.

  • I have to say this is my favorite video you've done. Clear concise points, easy to understand analogies and all under 5 minutes. I wanted to make a video on this at some point as well, however this will be a great video to send people towards.
