I think, the reason he is holding that roman picture is because, he likes them. And no one around knows that. So he likes to be like: "A MAGESTIC TYRANT. A WARRIOR OF HIS OWN KIND! A MILITARY LEADER AND A RULER OF HIS LANDS. HE STANDS READY TO DEFEND AND TO APPROACH THE ENEMY TO ANNIHILATE IT. HIS BRAVE EYES LOOK OUT TO THE SKY AND SEE THROUGH HORIZONT. HE DOES NOT SEE THE END OF LAND.. THE MIGHTY SUN! THE MIGHTY WARRIOR AND DEFENDER OF LAW AND SUPREME ORDER"!
Some time before Monty Python our good friend Franz Kafka wrote an essay 'Address to an Academy' in which a Gorilla described how he had learnt to behave like a human being. Some of Kafka's other stuff is pretty comic too. The scene in 'The Trial' in front of the initial hearing could well be out of Monty Python, and there are others!
Librarians round the world adore this sketch, and many of us have Eric Idle's line about employing "wild animals as librarians" posted on their walls.
not quite though, it not being an aggressive orang-utan who was previously a wizard but prefers the effect of the accident caused by a failed experiemnt...
omg I'm lucky to be allive! I just laughed and gagged for 5 minutes straight after watching this, trying to picture somebody going into the library complaining about a damaged book, and all of the sudden this door opens, and this gorilla leaps out, and grabbs the book, and bite into their arm! omg!
Very good. The Monty Python group were insane, but geniuses. Make sure to watch their films (Monty Python and The Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life), they are spectacularly funny. My librarian is a sloth... dull and boring... but can get angry when off by a certain person especially who I can mention...
I must say that A) I haven´t seen this sketch and B) NOW I start to get an inkling where Pratchett got his librarian-idea from, even if it was subconscious. :D
Total brilliance.

Is there an Orangutang in the library? No, but ask the Librarian.
"that isn't a man! That is an Orang-u-Tang, from Bhang-Bhang-Duc and nearby islands!"
"Very good, Mr. Pessimal. Not many get that right."

This is a satire of affirmative action, isn't it?
God, why do we STILL have it?

No, it's just nonsense. So is opposing affirmative action.
