What effect does like sheets on the drum have? :O

I'd say the sheets minimizes vibration. My friend Dan suggested to put a pillow inside the bass drm when i was still using my old drm set bec it was making too much vibration noice. My dad thought of putting cloth sheets on the heads which look wierd but they do sound better for me. I'm after the sound that i like not much on the look.

Ringo Star used to do that on his snare drum to give a flat slappy sound.
