I loaned my Heat dvd to a co-worker to watch. She said she'd never really had any interest in movies like this before. Well, her house burnt down. After telling her how sorry I was for her loss and asked her if everyone was ok, my next question puzzled her. I asked her did she include my Heat dvd in her claim? This movie is and always will be a classic.
Great scene. According to Michael Mann in the commentary, Tom Sizemore's staredown wasn't originally in th script. The cold look in his eyes expressed lethal potential without saying a word or any kind of histrionics. And that camefrom the work/research that Tom Sizemore did during pre-production. BRILLIANT scene from a BRILLIANT film.
Neil should have escaped with Eady, and wait a couple of years before coming back and going after Waingro. Although it would be a pain in the butt for Neil to find Waingro, Neil is obviously very resourceful and probably would have pulled it off.
@stableshadow you can try to say they are badass etc etc, but really they are petty thieves, real corporate criminals and politicians get away with 100x worse things, and they never have to deal with guns, or have the risk of being shot at
Just before Deniro walks in, the camera is positioned outside the diner looking in. You can see the reflection of the Caddillac that Deniro's character drives pulling into a parking spot. Unbelievable detail in this movie.
I have to agree with Attacia in that is was probably Dinero's last great film. Though to be fair, from a comedic genre, Anaylze This and Meet the Parents came after Heat, and they (not their sequels) were great in their own rite.
Certain directors can pull the best out of an actor. Michael Mann is one of those, along with Scorcese, who can bring the best out of Dinero. Heat was one shot in a million, and Michael Mann hit it on target with both barrels!
Is Robert De Niro wearing the same suit Vincent (Tom Cruise) was in Collateral? I know Heat and Collateral had a lot of references to each other, just wondering if that's one of them.
Whoah, I never noticed until you mentioned that. Ever notice how Michael Mann's films are (on top of being pretty great) like two-hour GQ ads? And expensive car ads (i.e., duPont Registry and Car)?
Yep.Waingro was almost begging him not to shoot :-))
I really wanted Neil to kill Waingro but at the same time he made the biggest mistake of his life:returning to that hotel instead of just getting out of L.A.:it was also the end for him.
Getting himself killed in the process was soo worth killing that Neo Nazi long haired shifty eyed trigger happy, no balls having traitor.
You have to understand that Neil HATED Waingro like the Nazis hated the jews, the whole crew did as a matter of fact. He fucked up their bank robbery, killed Trajo & his wife, got Cheritto killed in a shootout, and Kilmer critically injured as well. He wanted him sooo badly. He went out of his way to track him & kill him.
Yeah i know Neil had all the reasons in the world to wack Waingro and Van Zandt as well but i'm just saying it's sad.Plus,he was really in love with Eady.Anyway,i'm glad the ending was sad. That's what makes this movie so authentic.
But at the same timeone has to wonder just what Neil's motivation was to go back and kill Waingro. Was he really doing it for his fallen allies, whose families he had know personally? Or was he doing it for himself, for his own pride, because he personally felt wronged and didn't want to let anyone get away with messing with him?
At the same time it was unlucky for Neil that the Hospital Vincent's daughter was at was so close to the airport.
I think his motivation was simple and not selfish. He had a crew. This crew was successful up until they added this fuck up Waingro. The crew dies off because of this fuck up, and Neil is the only one remaing, and the master plan goes to shit.
He went back for waingro for one simple reason. Revenge...for EVERYTHING.
@ApocalypticRedIX because it went from an armed robbery to three counts of first degree murder because of what he did. And they were not exactly happy with that escalation. They should have shot him dead right there at the truck.
Yeah, but you have to remember, Neil was a bad guy too. The only difference between Neil and Waingro was that Neil only killed when he had to, but he still chose a life of crime that resulted in the deaths of a number of police officers.
Actually that was a double tap to the chest and one in the head. Classic hit man style. 2 in the chest and one in the head your survival rat is less than 5%
Robert DeNiro is the Eddie Van Halen of hollywood. There is no better actor than him. He was so fucking smooth & cool in this movie, he made you cheer for the bad guy. I'd like to see DeNiro & Harrison Ford square off in a movie like Heat, Ford the good guy,DeNiro the bad guy. That would be cinema history.....
I think that was a perfect shot to the stomach, kind of like real boxer do, it reminds me of the times of Deniro in Raging Bull which subsequently according to Michael Mann he had to train hard every day in boxing and physical for the film as well as th rest of the crew.
Neil's definitely a badass. His crew would've made out with millions had it not been for Waingro. This was by far one of the most realistic scenes in the movie. The lining in the trunk was a disturbingly clever touch by Michael Mann. Great movie, great cast, great period.
Honestly, after Waingro escaped Mccauley should of made him the first priority before anything else. Considering that he could of been a liability in the long run which he turned out to be anyway.
I never thought it was unrealistic...he had at least 10 seconds in which to make an escape and on top of that, neil was turned away from him to look at the police car. Obviously a lot of luck's involved that they happened not to find him (he can't have gotten far) but i didnt think that the idea of him escaping was impossible.
hell yeah hes bad ass, hes the mafia of movies. he can do nothing wrong, and my fave part in the movie is when de niro shoots the guy in his hotel room, but before he does that he says look at me, i fucking love that part.
