I'm female. I have had a situation where I was stopped by a police officer (by this same name: McCawley) in Florida. He was tailing me, stopped me---couldn't give me a reason why. Threw me on someone else's car for what he said--I couldn't talk to someone who was witnessing what he was doing. Then he arrested me---saying that I was resisting arrest--that is why he was arresting. me.
Gates asked for the cop's name and badge #. That's why he got arrested. Crowley didn't know who he was messing with. He probably thought Gates was just another Harvard clerical worker. He didn't the man he was wrongfully arresting knows the president on a first name basis. That's where it all went wrong. #1: Obama did not have all the facts and should have not even gotten involved. # 2: The officers don't know who is who when they arrive on a crime scene. Just because a person is in their own home does not give them the right to be belligerent and abusive to police officers. #3: As far as saying the police should have left once they knew he was the home owner. The police had business to take care of regarding the break-in and could not leave. This guy deserved to be arrested.

The police officer in this case acted appropriately. He was called to the scene to investigate a possible break in. Professor Gates was belligerent and uncooperative and accused the officer of racism when the officer was merely trying to ascertain whether Gates was indeed the resident. When Gates finally did show his ID, the officer was prepared to leave, but Gates was not prepared to stop being an asshole. He followed the officer outside and continued to shout at and threaten him.

I agree with Obama that the arresting officer acted stupidly. As soon as the i.d. proved the man lived there, they should have said, glad there's no problem and left. My brother is a police officer. They are taught they could be killed at any moment. Here you have a call that someone is breaking into a house. Cops show up according to the call. Guy is already in the house. How do cops know who is in the house? Ask for ID. Is it so hard to be polite to someone who was attempting to do their job and protect your home? Any situation a cop responds to could be deadly. Try living with that every day on your job!

I personally know some of those and wish I didn't. They are worse than the criminals. I also know many good cops. Officers that deal with the scum of society that most don't want to know about. There are many incidents of racism that warrant this kind attention, this isn't one of them.
There is a real problem with the police in our country. I live in New Jersey and the police here shoot and kill unarmed black people. That is a fact of life on the New Jersey Turnpike. This Gates incident just shows how the police can turn an ordinary incident into a nightmare. I lived around minorities all my life and racist cops are the same now as when I was a little child. The police need to change with the times.
First off, this Gates incident shows how BOTH parties can turn an ordinary incident into a nightmare. You can't hang everything on the officer. He may have overreacted by arresting Gates, but Gates was the one that initially blew the situation out of proportion. Again, this was not a race issue and Gates made it one. Obama has even back peddled on this a bit. I agree there is still a race issue in the country but it isn't only the police that need to change with the time.
Oh really, did you hear the latest news. The woman who first called 911 has finally come out and spoken. She states that she NEVER mentioned race when she called 911. The race issue came from the police only..
Really... The dispatcher asked if the suspect was black, white, or hispanic. Huh go figure. Well there it is, it's definitely a race thing then. Or is it just trying to get more information on what the witness saw. Ok so lets try this. A bank is robbed. We can't ask it the person was black or white (might lead to racial profiling). How about if its a man or woman (careful could lead to gender bias). Height or weight maybe (no no, might piss off the little people or the over weight).
So what we then have is something like... a suspect of non-specific gender, of non-specific race, that is average height, average weight, with dark hair and eyes. Hmmm well that is going to make it so much easier to find the suspect isn't it? In any crime, the police are going to ask questions that are going include the race of the suspect. They are trying to limit the pool of people to look at for that crime. The dispatcher didn't ask if the suspect was black. He said black, white or hispanic.
You missed the entire point. The police LIED in the police report twice. First when the cop said he was following a report of 2 blacks breaking into the house. Second when the cop said he talked to the caller when he did not. Lie upon lie makes poor police work.
It's easy to generalize and determine the police were wrong from a very cut and dry perspective. However, that is not the case here as none of us know what actually happened. It's not like the police had it in for the guy and set him up, again the neighbor called and it was a breaking and entering call for the police. All of this really matters little when the topic is obama and his speaking on a subject any president would have stayed away from. Obama is an out and out racist. He had no proof.
The bottom line is, the police had probable cause to enter the premises because they were called by a neighbor. Under law in most states, this would give them the right to stay there as long as they wanted to or as long as needed. They could search the house for burglars as a safety measure or maybe, just maybe, the guy didn't have his ID until he was in the house so the officers entered to keep an eye on him. There are so many variables to consider so basically no one on here knows the truth.
The professor was already inside of his home when the police arrived. The police just didn't believe this guy lived there. So, you obviously have not a clue what you're talking about.
Also, a single phone call from someone who doesn't know what's going on in the situation doesn't qualify as probable cause. This is at most reasonable suspicion. Entering a home on reasonable suspicion is a very, very, very thin line. Your home, as the US Supreme Court put it, is your ultimate sanctuary.
He's president also, not just commander in chief there junior. He was asked a question at a press conference, and didn't give the typical bullshit politician response. For how much I don't, and you seem to not, like Obama, that should be praised.
Uh yeh, i agree with the guy that said they should have left immediately. There is no point in staying when you already know hes the owner of the house.

The reason I say this...is to show that I have had a REAL situation with a deputy sherriff. The thing is....they will tell you to do something and expect you to do it while they are saying it. If you don't react immediately they will take you down and arrest you. That's just how it is.

But Gates was not only complying he was harassing the officer. He only got the consequence of his poor judgment.

Threw me on someone else's car for what he said--I couldn't talk to someone who was witnessing what he was doing. Then he arrested me---saying that I was resisting arrest--that is why he was arresting. me.

There should be a website in order to see the police officers in the community. There should be an easier way in order to place comments on each officers who are doing work in the community and the reactions from the community towards the police officers who are patrolling there communities. If the police officers have been recorded of having very bad manners or bad conduct the DEA should investigate and there jobs should be reviewed.

The police officer in this case acted appropriately. He was called to the scene to investigate a possible break in. Professor Gates was belligerent and uncooperative and accused the officer of racism when the officer was merely trying to ascertain whether Gates was indeed the resident. When Gates finally did show his ID, the officer was prepared to leave, but Gates was not prepared to stop being an asshole. He followed the officer outside and continued to shout at and threaten him.

I agree with Obama that the arresting officer acted stupidly. As soon as the i.d. proved the man lived there, they should have said, glad there's no problem and left. It just takes a few power-hungry cops to give a whole department a bad name. Out of the 5 or 6 cops there one of them should have had the common sense to step in and do the right thing.

My brother is a police officer. They are taught they could be killed at any moment. Here you have a call that someone is breaking into a house. Cops show up according to the call. Guy is already in the house. How do cops know who is in the house? Ask for ID. Is it so hard to be polite to someone who was attempting to do their job and protect your home? Any situation a cop responds to could be deadly. Try living with that every day on your job!

I would have happily dated him if he had asked, but he was a few years older than me. I also kissed a black man. Color means nothing to me. I was taught that all blood is red. The professors lawyers said he did show id but didn't dispute anything else in the official police report. So at some point he showed id but the idiot starts out by yelling at the cops and calling them racist for just asking for id and isn't cooperating. He wonders why the arrest him. There is a real problem with the police in our country. I live in New Jersey and the police here shoot and kill unarmed black people. That is a fact of life on the New Jersey Turnpike. This Gates incident just shows how the police can turn an ordinary incident into a nightmare. I lived around minorities all my life and racist cops are the same now as when I was a little child. The police need to change with the times.

First off, this Gates incident shows how BOTH parties can turn an ordinary incident into a nightmare. You can't hang everything on the officer. He may have overreacted by arresting Gates, but Gates was the one that initially blew the situation out of proportion. Again, this was not a race issue and Gates made it one. Obama has even back peddled on this a bit. I agree there is still a race issue in the country but it isn't only the police that need to change with the time.

Really... The dispatcher asked if the suspect was black, white, or hispanic. Huh go figure. Well there it is, it's definitely a race thing then. Or is it just trying to get more information on what the witness saw. Ok so lets try this. A bank is robbed. We can't ask it the person was black or white (might lead to racial profiling). How about if its a man or woman (careful could lead to gender bias). Height or weight maybe (no no, might piss off the little people or the over weight).

So what we then have is something like... a suspect of non-specific gender, of non-specific race, that is average height, average weight, with dark hair and eyes. Hmmm well that is going to make it so much easier to find the suspect isn't it? In any crime, the police are going to ask questions that are going include the race of the suspect. They are trying to limit the pool of people to look at for that crime. The dispatcher didn't ask if the suspect was black. He said black, white or hispanic.

It's easy to generalize and determine the police were wrong from a very cut and dry perspective. However, that is not the case here as none of us know what actually happened. It's not like the police had it in for the guy and set him up, again the neighbor called and it was a breaking and entering call for the police. All of this really matters little when the topic is obama and his speaking on a subject any president would have stayed away from. Obama is an out and out racist. He had no proof.

The bottom line is, the police had probable cause to enter the premises because they were called by a neighbor. Under law in most states, this would give them the right to stay there as long as they wanted to or as long as needed. They could search the house for burglars as a safety measure or maybe, just maybe, the guy didn't have his ID until he was in the house so the officers entered to keep an eye on him. There are so many variables to consider so basically no one on here knows the truth.

The professor was already inside of his home when the police arrived. The police just didn't believe this guy lived there. So, you obviously have not a clue what you're talking about.
Also, a single phone call from someone who doesn't know what's going on in the situation doesn't qualify as probable cause. This is at most reasonable suspicion. Entering a home on reasonable suspicion is a very, very, very thin line. Your home, as the US Supreme Court put it, is your ultimate sanctuary.
