Actually I don't think the movie ended when Neil brought Del to his home. The movie went on to show Del having thankgiving dinner with Neil's family. The scene when Neil is on the train thinking about his family, well those shots of his family are shots from scenes later on in the movie when they're having thanksgiving dinner. John Hughes must have took those shots out and inserted them into the train scene. before cutting out the dinner scenes
