  • I watch this every once in a while to remind me to put things in the right perspective.

  • One of the best film i ever watched !

  • wow this movie looks more like an acid trpi lmao

  • Some people choose mind altering substances to alter their mind

Some people choose mind altering activity to alter their mind.....

Don't judge based on the vessel, but rather the result ;)

  • ignorance is a bitch aye.. I watched it without taking any substances.. just watch the movie, if you don't understand, learn to dream.

  • GameStarDE

  • I would say to watch this on drugs, but you would lose so much of the movie. If you're actually watching the movie for a meaningful experience, watch it sober, then watch it again for fun on drugs. This movie changed my life. No joke. I don't look at anything the same.

  • what does this movie have to do with drugs? why is everyone in the comments talking about drugs?

  • @masshysteriaxx look at how trippy the visuals are. everyone thinks it's much better if you watch it while baked

  • If you need drugs to understand or enjoy this film, not only are you abusing your own mind, your abusing this film as well.

  • @MegaFloydhead I'm not saying its better if you are high, but this director made dazed and confused, plus making the movie like this was sure to draw attention from stoners. The director knew this and still made it this way. I dont think its abusing the film at all watching it high, it might not be as good and you might not be able to understand it as well when ur high, but I almost think there was a part in the back of the directors mind that was thinking, I bet stoners will love this movie.

  • @jackhavick1 I understand some movies are better accommodated than others, but I still think that it's a movie best enjoyed with the full attention of the viewer if you truly want to understand it, and not just laugh and get the munchies. I don't do drugs though, so I don't know both sides of the argument.

  • @MegaFloydhead no i completely agree, I just think stoners would also enjoy this movie.

  • @jackhavick1 yeah, that makes sense.

  • I find this movie interesting because of all the philosophy in it. In some ways it makes sense even if you don't know what exactly everyone is talking about, if I had to make a guess of what it is about it is about reality and how we look at it, but the main character is in fact dreaming wondering if what he is experiencing is reality. I may be wrong but I always find this an absorbing movie.

  • The first time I watched this movie was during my first LSD trip recently. It was absolutely mind-blowing for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it and started reading through the script last night. I'll be watching it again soon while sober :)

  • Cool storyline but I wish it had better animation.

  • @asubramanian2011 are you kidding me?! the animation is what makes the movie! i think it pretty accurately captures what things look like in a dream - the way things shift and move and change.

  • @skylark...this actually came before Scanner Darkly.

  • @vanessagras Ahh I see... Well I just really dislike how lazy the animation is. It looks like it practically took no effort to create the visuals because they had software to render footage into a cartoon style... I enjoy films with more substance, hard work and creativity (such as Enter The Void)

  • Looks like a shit cartoon and is giving me a headache... Definitely not considering wasting my time with this Scanner Darkly rip off

  • @SkylarkStudios good idea, if you can with only 2min of video judge the whole film, so yeah, it will give you a headache. A very bad one...

  • @SkylarkStudios is the same director of Scanner Darkly.

  • @locario13 Yep.

  • Amazing !!!!!

  • I wanna watch this movie. o: Not on drugs though because I dont do drugs.. O.o;

  • AMAZING!

  • LOVE this movie

  • one of the shittiest movies i've ever seen. so much pretentious bullshit here its fucking unbearable.

  • @scoutsouljademoman How is it pretentious?

  • ugh all these squares complaining about appreciating the movie sober. if youre high and it helps you appreciate the movie more, well then great! thats fine and there are worse thing sthan smoking the bud of a plant. jesus

  • @RiggadonDan if I was high my whole life I would probably enjoy it, but I don't think that is to recommend either.

  • @Serafisk88 of course you need to respect other peoples views, but dont diss them. thats my philosophy

  • @RiggadonDan I don't see being high as a view of anything. I'm not against it, but after a while it gets kinda strange that you have to enjoy everything under the influence, especially someting that is fantastic either way.

  • @Serafisk88 you can still enjoy it sober, being high just enhances it. but as long as you take tolerance breaks every couple months you shouldnt be too dependant

  • @RiggadonDan Of course it enchanses it, but I don't wanna drink and smoke weed 24/7 and taking MDMA in between just to enchance my everyday experience. I get my dreams for free as they say.

  • @Serafisk88 i agree, a balance of being sober and high needs to be kept.

  • Can somebody tell me what was this movie really about?? i didn't quite understand it?

    thanks

  • @Youngdre4mz its really just scenarios involving several people talking about their own views of life and wats real and wat's not real and a bunch of philisophical things and dreams, thats wat i got out of it at least

  • I first saw this movie on cable in 2003 when I was 10 years old, blew my freaking mind! I've loved it ever sinvce

  • WE HAVE TO WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!

Life is much more than our eyes can reach. Like someone once said: "Go as far as you can see. When you get there, you'll be able to see farther."

  • With the music soundtrack it makes it a bit more palletable, kind of like when they put music to Fritz Lang's, "Metropolis". I'd sit through this whole movie if it had good music through the whole thing like this trailer.

  • This movie has great meaning

  • this movie never fails to make me look at my life differently, it's like everytime i watch i find something new. amazinggggggg

  • Our story began like any other story, with doubt.

  • whats the song at 1:14

  • @holaadios123ramones The Passenger by Iggy Pop

  • Drugs or no drugs this is a great film, and I think those who are able to comprehend it, regardless, are the ones who really can take the most out of watching this peice of work.

  • @NGFilmandCG I would say more like-advanced movie for intelligent & open-minded people hungry for something with high quality and unusual, and that makes you think-greetings from Macedonia!

  • The worst mistake that you can make is to think you're alive when really you're asleep in life's waiting room.

  • Okay, this was weird.. When i transcribed audio and the dude said: "Your life is yours to create." The transcribed audio said: "Your life is listed for you." That's pretty creepy.. Lol. Test it, it's true.

  • Your life is yours to create

  • Stupid people! this movie is awesome without drugs... I am so pissed that people have associated it so much with drugs.

  • @DannyLetsRoll LSD!!! FUCKING BITCH

  • @DannyLetsRoll yea even the trailer says the trip begins " wtf

  • @DannyLetsRoll

There was once a very famous, wold renowned biochemist that hated that psychedelic chemicals were even *called* drugs. I am so pissed that people cannot open their minds enough to realize that associations between this movie and drugs are completely irrelevant to the movie, or to the drugs.

Despite the similarities being uncanny. ;)

  • @bwilson409 Not really... if you read the comments every one says how tripping this movie is... and LSD is drug, just like aspirin just like prozac just like every other fucking drug.

  • @DannyLetsRoll ..just like alcohol, cigarettes, sex, porn, food, games, movies and so on...

  • @DannyLetsRoll your pissed? doesn't that mean your drunk? don't you get drunk from alcohol? is alcohol a drug? lol

  • @DannyLetsRoll some people are smart about their drug use. You can't deny a tradition that has existed for thousands of years, long before alcohol probably. Did you ever wonder why your brain has special receptors for certain kinds of drugs? It's like we are wired for it. In any case, if drugs are a detriment to us (I'm talking about the natural ones), then natural selection would've killed off the drug users. Yet here we are lol

  • @DannyLetsRoll So? You're saying the movie is awesome without drugs, while other people say that its awesome WITH them. What makes your opinion more important than theirs? Is it the morality of using drugs? Because that's a different issue entirely.

Just do what YOU enjoy and don't call anyone stupid for doing the same....

Oh, and the reason that it is associated with drugs so much is because it broadly portrays the conversations that people on certain drugs commonly partake in

  • @EverydayThugs There is no morality issues on an unhealthy habit that makes you dysfunctional on everyday life. Even if its awesome with them, people that use them for

entertainment purposes should stop creating a sub-culture around amazing pieces of art. This subculture might have an impact against the piece of art itself since many people will simply not watch this movie because they are not drug users. People that do drugs are stupid by definition! Otherwise they wouldn't do them!

  • @DannyLetsRoll If someone isn't going to watch a movie because they don't use drugs then that's their problem...

You really need to educate yourself and realize that this world is bigger than the closed box that you seem to live in, around 7,000,000,000 times bigger actually, i.e you are just one person...

Were people like Bob Marley, John Lennon, Tim Leary, and Carl Sagan "stupid by definition", just because they smoke marijuana and/or did psychedelics?

  • @EverydayThugs I don't judge their work. I just judge their health habits the same way I would judge some overweight person. Its bad for your health, no matter what, you have to be idiot to make use of something that can kill you. By definition your survival instincts are not working and by definition you are stupid (A person that does not think).

  • @DannyLetsRoll If someone is as easily influenced as deciding that he/she will not watch a movie based on the fact that they are not a drug user, than he/she is the one at fault by being so easily influenced and horribly closed minded. Your argument about drug users is also frustratingly circular and frankly childish. And since you do not want drug users to incorporate themselves with cultures of non users, that logic must work both ways.

  • @echo539 Nobody is as easily influenced, its the society we live in that gets influenced. Its that simple, society won't work as an advertising mechanism to promote such works. The only reason that this would happen is because the movie its self is associated with drugs, society disproofs drugs and so and the movie. I am just saying that such pieces of art could be more popular if people wouldn't associate them with drugs because society itself would approve them.

  • @DannyLetsRoll Wow wow wow, 'stupid by definition'? I'm sorry, but how can you generalise on something like that? Seriously; are you kidding? William Burroughs took an incredible amount of drugs from Weed to Heroin to Soma for god's sake, and he's got to be one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Even ignoring the ENTIRE music industry; Lewis Carroll, Bill Gates, Aldous Huxley, STEVE JOBS. How on earth could you call these people 'stupid by definition'? You don't know what you're saying

  • @MeandmySara Yes you are stupid if you make drug use/abuse, no matter what your other accomplishments are. Doesn't disqualify you from being an idiot. Also the wheel was invented by a man who was far more stupid than any average human nowadays. Does this mean he is smart because of his accomplishment(inventing the wheel)? No, I don't think so. Stupid people do drugs, smart people live their lives.

  • @DannyLetsRoll Firstly, you don't 'make' drug use.. But your argument is idiotic, and actually, yes, he probably was an incredibly intelligent person - Homo Sapiens have been around way longer than the wheel, so he could have easily been more intelligent than you or me, just much less educated. That is if he had existed, when in reality the likelihood of the wheel having been invented by a single person, in a single place is ridiculous - it probably evolved for thousands of years.

  • @MeandmySara And by the way, there are plenty of stupid people who don't do drugs would you agree? In which case how is it that smart people can't exist AND do drugs? The fact that you insist on calling Steve Jobs 'an idiot' makes me seriously question if you haven't misinterpreted the definition. He is a genius, and your black and white reasoning makes you at best a very stupid "smart" person. Not all "smart" people live their lives, and many people on drugs do, or go on to.

  • @MeandmySara My argument is that something is wrong with the chemistry of your brain. Not going to argue about the smartness of steve jobs which I personally believe that he is just a douche, however it is true that there are other "smart" or innovative people that do drugs. Its just perfectly logical to me, that if you have suicidal or self destructive tendencies you are stupid(stupid as some parts of your brains obviously do not operate) in your own very unique way. Apart from your IQ score.

  • @DannyLetsRoll You have it all wrong. Those that don't do drugs are self-destructive and stupid for following society's conventional standards. They limit their choices based on what they hear. They don't allow themselves to experience what the universe has to offer, because quite frankly they wouldn't be able to handle it. They have no knowledge on how to use it properly or moderate usage.

  • @Hnnnnnggh no offense but thats all justification of a junkie lol i enjoy drugs dont get me wrong but how on earth can someone be stupid for not taking a mind altering substance? i don't believe there's anything wrong with doing whatever you want but you kinda cross the line into addiction when you start justifying why it's right for people to do drugs, plus ALL drugs have some negative effects. another words it's in no way a bad choice not to do (any substance be it acid or even tylenol)

  • @TrailerTrashThorne I totally agree

  • @Hnnnnnggh dude you are just justifying drug usage. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, I smoke weed all the time, but I agree with TrailerTrashThorne when he says there is nothing wrong with people who dont do any drugs at all. your argument that people who dont do drugs dont understand the world is just plain wrong. Drugs may offer different perspectives, but those may or may not be damaging or incorrect themselves. If you cant do anything sober, you cant do anything at all.

  • @MeandmySara To sum up, yeah! people that do drugs are stupid. Their innovative nature or luck doesn't disqualify them from belonging to the club of stupids. Yeah, there are also many more stupid people that don't do drugs, its like saying that because there are clouds there is rain rather than saying because it rains there are clouds.

  • It doesn't really seem like it would be good to watch and i'm highh...?

  • @sooopaanigga That isn't a question.

  • The music (opening bars) at the beginning of the trailer strikes me as the opening bars to K-Ci & JoJo's "All My Life" played down half an octave (that track itself was riffing Eric Johnson's guitar standard 'Cliffs of Dover".)

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • Best movie I've been watching my entire life , should be a movie every person should have seen at least once in a lifetime , very thought inspiring ,and delivers lots of conversation material , a shame such movies don't get a lot of attention , reality tv seems alot more "in" these days , people don't appreciate the message movies like waking life are trying to bring to people , too busy being a working robot , buying shit they dont need etc. , our society is just plain silly and sad.

  • I just watched this movie... Fuck,i think it will change me! Even more because i realize before watching this movie that we are free only in our dreams, and i have idea for long time that i want to know when i am dreaming...:) I started to build myself in spiritual ways..:)

Anyone know same movies as this? Freaking awesome!

  • must watch this sober thenn Stoned. then sober then sober again. then stoned.

  • depois desse filme você nunca mais poderá voltar pra caverna.

  • a watch this on shrooms tomarrow :)

  • Very interesting movie and at times very thought provoking and inspirational.

Some may say that the theories explored in waking life can lead someone to search for a new life and a self fulfilling prophecy in which one can achieve whatever they want and live in whatever state they want., I agree with this TO AN EXTENT.

Something people forget about - Genetics. Our genetics defines our capabilities. No matter how much willpower we have, the unfortunate truth is, our genetics may let us down.

  • @musicmatterstome105 Physically, our genes may let us down for sure. But no one knows exactly how genes control something as 'immaterial' as our personality or consciousness. People only limit themselves if they believe their personal traits are inevitable results of their genes. Any phobia and any habit can be overcome.

  • Great film!

  • are you a dreamer?

  • great movie, i love theories on life and the universe as we know it, does anyone here astral travel? or have alot of lucid dreams?

  • @SeanNolan5 Yes I have very vivid dreams every night. It really started about 2 months ago when I started really contemplating life and parallel realities and other things. Before that I only had dreams (or at least memories of my dreams) very rarely. Like once every couple months or so. Its all the time now. I'm still working on becoming lucid in my dreams so I can control the reality. I'm fascinated by the idea of astral projection, and working on learning that skill.

  • inception is nothing,it's too boring, it was a long nightmare.Waking life is pure and genuine, I'm saying this from Colombia, south America.

  • @moras1303 Then you are a very werid man, sir.

  • @moras1303 i agree from what i have seen in the trailer! i am an incan descendent! Lima Peru! Ayahausca in my blood!

  • @tmlangdon1 the movie renegade is much better!

  • @moras1303 inception is like, the institution's and ego's attempt at artistic creation. They had a good idea i guess but its just so obviously a product of current society, they couldnt fully comprehend the idea's and concepts it dealt with, as it is not in their nature to understand such things. this is what i believe atleast :)

  • whats the name of the song from the beginning of the video?

  • where is the music of the video from?

  • OMG! I have searched everywhere for this movie, its been a decade

and tonight I found it - Just like that

  • @MaraudingSoundness its a great movie :D

  • Why is everyone writing paragraphs?

  • This movie without a doubt is not for everyone. it's a love it or hate film, personally i liked more than I thought. i honestly felt this was a film about listenting to how others thought of reality, and how they go deep into their analysis. im not the smartest person in the world, but i cant pick this movie apart because it's about listening to others and thats an interesting concept. i do like it, the visuals are steller. I'm giving this film a 8/10

  • @superhuman295 This movie made me go salsa dancing with my confusion, and i went headbanging with my sub-consciouce.

  • @HaloReplicas HAHAHAHA tru that

  • @Etaks89 I see your point, and I accept it. But the fact is the further it goes, the less rational it sounds, it is as if you are sitting thru a conversation with mental patients. I've seen the movie too many times now, and I've attended lectures as well as seminars on different topics of existentialism. I like the topic as it is, and the movie is brilliant in its own right but it becomes too wrapped around in itself to the point where it loses reference. A must see, nevertheless.

  • @shad0wMata

I disagree. I've seen this film twice and I really enjoyed the experimental, original feel to it. It definitely wasnt your typical Hollywood schlock with tons of violence and vulgarity and explosions for people with low attention spans, it actually requires that you pay attention to what the people are saying, and it features many diiferent people with different perscectives and interesting thought provoking topics. It's very intelligent, not like listening to mental patients

  • I have this on dvd. I wanted to see it because I saw a glimpse of it on HBO at a friend's house and I was intrigued. It's a superb movie, and quite original, but quite honestly, after awhile it gets too self indulging. A little bit full of shit, partly because it doesn't have a single plot, it is mostly different points of view. Towards the end it kinda comes apart from the initial theme. Even the writers were struggling to finish accordind to the commentary. It's still insightfully good, though

  • @shad0wMata I disagree, I followed the film from beginning to end and it paints a very profound picture of what the entire movie was pointing to in the first place. What's that? Well it's an existential discussion from beginning to end. And it may seem to you that the "different points of view"s were in fact different however all of them relate to the idea that the dream state maybe indeed as real if not more real than this waking life. It goes further than this, but then again just ideas.

  • What's the last song in this?

  • @shattmanta Iggy Pop - The Passenger.

  • @itthecoldhand Stop arguing with Volcanic9. Whatever he is, he's not worth our time.

  • It is *amazing* how much I hated this movie!

  • ketamine

  • @itthecoldhand Exactly. Your book would not be good, but some people might like it. The book however, like this film, remains not good, quality-wise. It's just a shame because there are many good creators out there who could have written that book or animated this film, they just apparently weren't hired.

  • @itthecoldhand haha well it sounds like you think I watched the movie. yeah no. I don't care about "deep" concept films, I care about talent. Homeless people are fine people, but they are certainly different from anyone else with an idea, because they have often have little experience to execute it, given that they are not extremely talented idiot savants. Talent is not really a perspective, talent is clear; what it produces is what lends itself to preference.

  • can someone please tell me who is singing the song at 1:15 in the trailer

  • Comment removed

  • I wish they chose artists to do the animation

  • @Volcanic9 I think this animation complements the dialogue quite well. Aardman could probably do a good job at this movie, Pixar or Dreamworks would butcher it completely.

  • @Lundix i see what you're saying, i just wish that they pooled together better talent for the project. A big studio yes could not translate a project like this because of it's thin demographic (however let me tell you pixar would not butcher it, it makes it's money for being good, not being dumb like dreamworks). I don't know what happened but the art is just not very good. They hired tracers not artists I'm guessing; compare this to A Scanner Darkly, that movie hired artists.

  • @Volcanic9 Dude, there are parts of this movie where every frame is PAINTED. It mashes many different styles of animation within the blanket of rotoscopy to give us the "dream" feeling. Scanner Darkly, as much as I love it, uses only one" "style" of animation throughout so it looks more "coherent". I personally love the art in this movie, and I think you're wrong. Different strokes, I guess, but don't try to pass off your opinion for objective truth.

  • @JuliusBonapart I'm an animator, and I say this animation is not as good as it could have been. When i say "good" I mean quality-wise. Unlike art there's good animation and there's bad animation, and this is in my opinion not so great animation. There are plenty of good animators and artists out there looking for a job, and it's a shame none of them were hired to create this movie.

  • @Volcanic9 I'm a filmmaker, but I don't believe in ad baculum arguments so that's irrelevant. Like you said, it's your opinion that this is bad animation, while it's my opinion that if you think that you missed the point of the art of this movie. There were plenty of great animators (dozens in fact) that were hired to work on this movie. The reason why it's jumpy and jittery, and often some movements are not fluid, is to enhance the dream-like quality of the world we're in. It worked for me.

  • @Volcanic9 In fact, there are so many different styles of animation in this movie that the disjointed jitteryness was the one thing that helped them keep any sort of coherence with an overall structure. If you want to be arrogant and "right" on the internet, go ahead and keep your low opinion of the animators. However, if you (as an animator) want to learn about what they were going for, buy the DVD and listen to the audio-commentary and watch the shorts they made to "get the hang of it".

  • @Volcanic9 If you still don't like it, that's fine. If you still think they did a bad job, in your opinion, that's fine. But at least you'll broaden your horizons a little bit to what the filmmaker intended. And I do hope, for the sake of those you work with in the future, that you're able to put aside your idea of "right" or "wrong" for the director's overall vision. He may be wrong, but he's directing and it's his call.

(btw, I've directed, edited and done AD work so its just friendly advice)

  • Comment removed

  • @Volcanic9 , it's a 2001 movie, go and check Scanner Darkly, also from R. Linklater, for better quality rotoscopic animation

  • @3dmundo what does that year have to do with anything? animation was mastered 60 years ago. I know about Scanner Darkly, and i know that good artists were hired for it. why that has not been done for this film remains a mystery to me considering the little amount that was apparently budgeted for hiring actors, seeing as the biggest name on the movie is that kid from Dazed and Confused. surely after they payed him with a pizza and a couple of joints they could have spent the rest on talent?

  • I agree. BEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN period.

  • this movie seems awesome, my girlfriend and my sister are gonna see it, i were a little skeptical first, but now i can't wait :D

  • They should release a ten year anniversary special edition.

  • Am I the only one here not high?

  • @seagoonproductions its better when your not high, understanding this film is alot more fucked up than not being able to grasp it.

  • watching this high last night. absolute mindfuck

  • @Bootstrap193 much people aren't ready to stand such philosophy notions...some ideas are dangerous.

  • My fuck, I watched this movie while on shrooms last night, it was life-changing.

  • If youre into movies like this look up a scanner darkly its a trip

  • Comment removed

  • i love borius carlofts

  • DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE WHILE HIGH

DOING SO WILL RESULT IN BRAN EXPLOSION

  • @PeiinNagato challenge accepted!

  • I'm stoned right now and this broke my brain.

  • oh and i do think inception is kinda intellectual movie... there's a lot behind it. you don't think nolan is an idiot do you? i have seen most of the movies mentioned here, and i appreciate you know such great movies and not only stuff like 2f2f, and even though there more intellectual than inception (some of them), it still is intellectual

  • actually if you think inception is ONLY an action movie you just don't understand the complexity. you can actually call it mindfuck but you have to think about it to see that. it's not that visible like donnie darko, lost highway, being john malcovich or whatever.

a lot of mindfuck-lovers don't see the beauty in inception because of prejudices, and not thinking outside the box

  • My friend experienced this on an acid trip........

and i cant think of one damn reason y he shuld'nt have done it!!

  • Is there any similar film? Cause i like this one very, very much :D

  • the world is an exam, to see if we can rise into the direct experiences.

our eyesight, a test, to see if we can see past it

matter a test for our curiosity

and doubtfulness an exam for our vitality

    ~Speed Levitch

  • wow

  • Someone knows the name of the song at 00:10

  • @kactusprod did you finally find the song?

  • @tsouk333 if your talking about the song at the end thats iggy and the stooges

  • @Pancakesatthedisco I'm talking about the song at 00:10 .. it's a small piano sample that sounds great!

  • Lucid Dreaming for the win!!

  • amazing movie right here. (:

  • Dub FX is the prototype for that Dreamer dude

  • I'm okay admitting that I don't think I'm smart enough to understand or enjoy this movie, but I may watch it regardless.
