Always loved to see how Sam moved when he played and sang. So much joy! And Bela always quietly standing off in his corner. Nobody like Cowan and Pat was great on the guitar. Love, love, love these guys!
I saw NGR at that country music club in NYC (can't remember what it was called, it was on 50th and 8th or in that area anyway - can someone help please). My brother and I had just arrived on a delayed flight from England for 2 weeks in the states. Even though we were tired and jetlagged we wanted to see some music so went out to see NGR who we didn't really know but thought might be good. Marty Stuart was supporting, and he was good, but NGR were something else entirely. Amazing performance
My dad went to see them at an outdoor festival, and it started pouring l5 minutes before they were supposed to go on. only like 20 people stayed. He said they came out and played like there was 20,000 people in the audience.
I'll agree it is a tragedy that NGR wasn't recognized more for their awesome talent. I loved them from the first time I saw them years ago. It is wonderful to have youtube to relive those amazing times. They are all brilliant musicians and their harmonies and their interwoven instrumentals are simply unparalleled. I've had a marvelous night revisiting their songs. - B.J.
I will never forget while i grew up my parents were hosts to bands travlin through our area, and New grass revival jammed at the house till the sun came up!!
What blows me away about new grass is that their music sounds new and current every time i hear it even though its been ,what ,25 years or more. its a testament to their talent.
Kind of funny how we just get a small glimpse of Bela Fleck in this. He wasn't so well known then. Sam Bush has so much creative energy. It would be great if they get together again even for just a one month tour.
Wow, wow, wow! Jamacian style bluegrass! I love it!! I'm a new fan of New Grass Revival, and it just blows me away how EVERY song they did was such an epic win! 5 stars.
@HillbillyJ I am so pleased you have discovered my favorite band and enjoy them so much. I really think they were ahead of their time. Sam Bush is my hero. I love his aggressive and explosive style of pickin. And I have never heard a bluegrass band have such a soulful lead singer as John Cowan. Truly my favorite singer STILL. I feel Bela Fleck is in a category all his own as a musician. And Pat Flynn, wow what a song writer and musician!
Check out John Cowan Band-I really think you'll love it!
@SamuelGuthrie I agree, I think they are still ahead of their time today! Nobody has been able to match them, IMHO, unless it would one of these guy's own bands. Sadly, there aren't many New Grass Revival fans, it seems most people have never even heard of them. Bluegrass circles still think of them as too modern. Its a tragedy, I think.
Thanks for suggesting John Cowan's band, they are awesome!
I saw them a couple of times and it was a holy hell moment where my heart swelled to three times its original size. Beer and pot are scary when the music is that good.
I don't have a clue how those people at that taping weren't up and having a great time with them. I had the good fortune a few times to see New Grass live and there was never anyone staying in their seats then. I will say that they are probably one of the best bands of all time for me. Sad to see them split when they did, you will never find 4 musicians of that caliber in a band together again. AWESOME!!!!
Don't know how those folks could have stayed glued to their seats for the taping of this show! This band's life was far too short. As someone in the music industry that listens to nearly everything, NGR has remained one of my personal favorite bands of all time. An amazing combination of playing chops, memorable music and good personalities. Not to diminish what they've all done since, but NGR was truly a special group! Thanks BluegrassLibrary for so many great NGR posts!
New Country--that must have been QUITE a show! (Unfortunately, too young & stupid to watch it at the time!) I LOVE this song and their version of it cooks (I say that in case the song's author has a hidden-away performance of it somewhere that I haven't heard :-) THANKS again, BluegrassLibrary (this used to be up here and disappeared for a while)
IT JUST DONT GET BETTER,than these guys.

I agree. This music is timeless. It makes for great road trip tunes too. Gets you in a good mood when you're driving 900 miles a day. :)
