It's funny that this was written it seems by someone just watching a river with flowers in the spring at night time. Westerners need drugs, and space battles to come up with music this intense.
yes, this piece is very typical of traditional Chinese music. It all starts with relaxing and peaceful melody for a while. Later have to cope with some struggle. e.g. the little boat sailing on the river encounters strong wind. Everything turns out fine, and the melody is peaceful and calm again.
@rogerthat155 not true, western capitalism uses music this intense to allure people into movies with space battles and drugs in them lol...the best musicians always play from contemplation, life lessons, and reflection...music was meant fort the soul, but some choose to market it as a commodity to be tethered...or to control, instead of allowing it to be a gift that frees the heart...
just beautiful, was looking for some lute music on youtube and then i ended here, then i forgot what i was even looking after hearing this......ty its really moving
This is incredible, I adore this type of Asian music. Is Guzheng the name of the style of music or the instrument you are playing upon? How long have you been playing?
This instrument sounds very similar to a Koto to me, I enjoy it very much.
I also really like the Japanese Shamisen, though the way that particular instrument is played seems...different than most in the sense that to my American ear, there doesn't appear to be a sense of rhythm.
Thank you. I've been playing near 20 years. Guzheng is the name of the instrument. This piece is called "Spring River Flower Moon Night". It's from the south region of China.
@yukinachang looks a bit like the Guqin instrument. but it is amazing you are very talented. Just out of curiosity how much would that instrument cost? same as piano?
Beautiful music and beautiful soul for music..... I could watch your hands all day long.... sometimes my sitar sounds a bit like this on a minor raga.... but such different timbres... at least we both bend notes a lot.....
@yukinachang Thank you- I you have a chance it's always rewarding to listen to Nikhil Banerjee play anything on Sitar - very deep, moving player...Happy New Year as well...
Is there any way you can post tutorials, i would love to play this instrument. I did some research, and all of the teaching books are not available in English, or perhaps you have any other ideas? I cant afford any teachers either.
This is a classics. The name of the song "Spring River Flower Moon Night" is from a Tang dynasty poem. It's originally a pipa piece written in the 1700s. Later people have adopted it to guzheng as well.
So beautiful. It sounds like a soundtrack to a beautiful dream. I almost fall asleep when listening...not from boredom but because it makes me feel so relaxed.
esta musica me lembrou muito Kung Fu Hustle :D, é um instrumento muito lindo e produz um som mais lindo ainda, parabéns, apesar de ser brasileiro eu amo a cultura chinesa :)
this is a very very traditional musical instrument, but if you know Chinese culture, you will know much more about this. very hard to explain, it's like this skill can show all your personality. :)
Awesome. I am so surprise Vietnam has Gu-Zheng and you can play with full expression of this Chinese classical music "Spring River flower moonlight" so wonderful.
This is so nice :) your play is like telling a story it clear s my mind from everything and i get rly happy from only listening to your play .. i can t better describe my feelings from your video with my bad english sorry. Simply it s amazing. :))
I think that the tone wood (sides of the guzheng) plays a part. Yukina (or carol) was telling me that this is a special model made for last year's shanghai music expo. I think she was telling me that it uses zi tan. Any wood with a high density (greater than than 1.0 g/cm3) would probably give such a good result.
Of course, that the soundboard was roasted helps. (Driving off moisture).
However some masters say that after 3 or so years, the wood deterioates (for roasted models).
one last question, why does it sound so loud and clear? how does the "resonance box" .. does it have a hole like the guitar or does it vibrate because of the string's effect? Thank you very much.
@yukinachang Thank you very much, the thing is, I want to make an instrument following the same idea but I don't think I'll be able to find guzheng strings in my country, so I was thinking which strings could do instead of those
Carol, the sound of this instrument is so beautiful! Will they be selling this again at this year's Shanghai Music Fair?
The other instrument that comes close to this level of perfection in tone color is the Tianyi model that uses aged spruce. The one with the lanhua motif.
Btw, does this Dunhuang model also use aged spruce? Is the soundboard one piece wutong or 5 pieces?
Just incredible.

i can spot the difference between guzheng an koto! any help?
GreekPiranha 2 months ago
@GreekPiranha
They are from the same family. However, they use different strings. guzheng uses nylon-wrapped-steel. Koto uses tetron. The tone is very different.
yukinachang 2 months ago
@GreekPiranha
An easy way is that the koto has 13 strings and the guzheng has I think, 25 strings (not so sure).

I don't know any other instrument using nylon-wrapped-steel. But the strings are relatively cheap compare to other instruments'.
There are 3 sound holes at the bottom. You can check our website for the pictures.
