That's the greatest hymn to humanity ever sung. That's us. We should be glad for it, damn the drama and the consequences. We're awesome. Each and every one of us.
wow its just so beautiful in which the spirit of the song is sung ... singing for justice & freedom & love for each other ... not just humans but our brothers & sisters ... all over this land ...
thank you Peter Segeers & Lee Hays & others like you who fight for justice beautiful song & so timely too in my own life!
Pete Seeger is an american musical icon, and yet, his humility and joy is overwhelmingly brilliant. He seems more into the fact that the audience is singing along that the fact that he is a true superstar. If only more musicians were like Pete--full of energy, humility, and joy... Hopefully he'll be with us to see his 100th birthday, and the world will be a better place then...
With most audience-participation songs, you have to drag the singing out of them. Take Pete and a great song, and the crowd sinks their teeth into it, and brings it on home. Pete Seeger is truly an American Treasure!!
Thank the cosmos there are people who get it. Who sing thier hearts out in one way or another to preserve what this country was meant to be. Happy New Year. May we all get it some day.
@edwardjayallan You know, I am a Libertarian(I am not sure about Teabaggers, they've been 'highjacked' by the neocons), but I think Pete Seeger, even if he is a communist, is an American hero. I think if he were an America communist dictator, he probably would be great. But not everyone, like Pete Seeger, is great.
@comeonfolks Although that's a nice post, here's a bit of info. Pete QUIT the CP in 1949. He was in the Party for maybe thirteen years. He's been out of the Party for SIXTY-TWO years. Isn't it time to finally stop defining him solely by a political allegiance he held for less than a decade and a half?
Pete is an independent, anti-repression, pro-peace, democracy and humanity person. THAT is what matters now. And it's not as if anyone in the CPUSA CAUSED Stalin to be Stalin.
Pete came to Japan and gave a concert in Shinjuku (1963 I think). Some of American students talked to him and he came back to our campus (International Christian University in Mitaka and we sang together.. What a memory.... What a man...
Brings tears to my eyes. A song that lives its own life. It must feel good to have written one song like that - let alone having written loads of them, like
I love to see how excited he still is about that song after singing it so many years! And I totally love that I am watching this with my 5-year-old daughter right now b/c she just learned this song in school! I hope Pete's message lives on for many years to come.
I second that emotion! Few performers have done as much as he has for the causes of freedom & justice...and he's still going strong in his 90's! Good for him! :-)
Pete will always be with us. He is one of the threads holding this country together. His songs and legacy will live on forever as part of the fabric that is is America.
Try the this song was part of the progressive movement of the time, not communist. The progressive movement was lead by several well known presidents, FDR being one of them.
So why do you take the time to search out a song, click on it and take the energy to type such a negative comment...do you not have anything better to do with your time. Why is it that some people if they disagree with a concept feel they must bash it, and cause such ill will? I hope your eyes will open soon....

Although the song might seem cheesy to everybody who went ot summer camp in the 80's 90's and up, it is still a truthful and beautiful song.

1chillygirl 3 years ago 3
@caliklovesmexies10 It's a universal humanity song.
Pete was already out of or on his way out of the Party when he and Lee Hays(who was NEVER in the Party)wrote it.
There's nothing in it that would lead anyone to "communism", at least not the Soviet or Chinese kind.
Just let the Cold War die already. And get over yourself. If you aren't rich, it's the rich that are your enemy. Not "communism".
