According to Georgetown university there are many other symbols and the letters IHS are in several places throughout the cathedral like room in which he was speaking and none of them were covered. He just wanted a traditional backdrop.
If they had refused I am sure he may have done just that.. or maybe his staff would have came up with a different back drop... but they said sure man no problem.. so we will never know.
