1. There is evidence to suggest thicker piercings can heal faster and easier in many cases... 2. Thicker piercings are typically anchored better. Imagine a wire cheese cutter, the thinner the wire...
...the easier it cuts cheese. When we do oral piercings we typically use a 14g. The same size as many belly button piercings, because it won't tear as easily in the soft moist tissue of the mouth...
AND, you can still get the same size tiny gemstones on the outside. Plus once it is healed if you want to wear those really thin pieces it should still fit with very little effect ...
Also, we use 3" needles to help ensure the angles of the piercing are optimal (more leverage and a cleaner line of sight)... sometimes it looks thicker than it is because it is long.
@Preslee1992 Sorry to hear about your experience. Typically these lip piercings are not as painful as cartilage... but everyone feels things differently and every piercer also has a different affect.
@SONGFREAKS These terms are about as relevant as "shark bites" and all the other made up terms. Monroe was the first one used for the upper side lip piercing so it is the most recognized...
Technically it is correct for any upper side lip piercing with a straight barbell instead of ring. Madonna is also acceptable, but fewer piercers will understand the importance of the term...
Another lesser known term for a monroe with no gem is "Chrome Crawford" because of Cindy Crawford. Some people might also say a true Monroe is only if it is high near the crease.
@glittered123 I'll be starting school tomorrow. But the peiricer wasn't in at the tatttoo shop so I'll have to do it this weekend. And I've been watching tons and tons of videos preparing myself. lol.
can i just ask what is it you guys use to mark the piercing spot with? i'm a newbie freehand piercer so i was just wondering if this is better than using a marker/sharpie or what xD
@AShadowofRiley they don't HAVE to its just that the needle is usually hollow to glide the piercing in easier so it doesn't irritate any further with un necesarry shoving. and it makes it easier to change the piercing since the hole is a litle bit bigger than the jewlery. but if you pierce it with a smaller needle thats not hollow, that would be fine as long as the jewlery fits into the hole.
its not that bad, unless you have a weak pain tolerance for me it was just a pinch and a burn sensation nothing major but it scared the hell outta me watching the needle come at my eye!
That's a thick needle. On other videos I have watched the needle was thinner.

@SONGFREAKS That's a very astute observation. The needle is probably thicker than others you have seen for a couple reasons...

sarah24448 2 weeks ago
@sarah24448 No, it's a madonna because it is on the opposite side that a monroe is supposed to be on.

@AShadowofRiley: They pierce at a 14g (sometimes even 12g) because it has less chance of rejecting and tearing.
