@jackiechanfan2010 Most likely they weren't purposely trying to catch the stingray. Once you have something caught on your hook, you still need to reel it in anyways to remove the hook

When fishing directly on the bottom, it's important that you use Circle-hooks, to make removal of the hook far easier, especially when it comes to stingrays. If you catch a stingray, flip it on it's back, wait for it to stop thrashing, and pinch the nose. After a few seconds, the ray will go limp, and go into "tonic". Circle-hooks have a high incidence of hooking fish in the corner of the mouth, which both saves the fish, and makes it far easier to de-hook. no need to cut the sting!!
