@Slayerthecrow lol funny that you mention that becuase capcom did attempt to sue them for the one girl next to that ken looking guy beecuase she looked liked chun li but lost the trial to them in court.
They made a Fighter's History Game that was pretty much dedicated to Mizoguchi. In story mode, he was the main character, but it was only for the Super Famicom though. They did have a arcade mode though. I normally use Ryoko for these games.
Despite this games reputation of being a SF2 clone, personally I like it more than SF2. This game is pretty easy to learn, and the combo system really flows nicely. I always suggest this game to people that are fans of old school fighters. Lee ftw.
@ghidorahlaptop 1984 Karate Champ + 1985 Yie Ar Kung-Fu + Brian Jacks Uchi Mata = SF1
SF1 + Galactic Warriors arcade + a touch of Street Smart = SFII
It isn't a 'direct copy' (as Capcom argued), but a tribute to Capcom's masterpiece - a congratulatory rendition of a genre that was perfected by SFII, yet omnipresent since the heyday of Yie Ar Kung Fu. It was really low of Capcom to try to claim the entire genre as their own - and try to sponge poor old Data East for a few notes in the process.
@MHMemeDoubleYourFun This is what I've been trying to tell some of these fanboys/girls for quite some time. Unfortuately, they can't be reasoned with.
It's funny how Capcom infringes Data East for Fighter's History in terms of... well, everything and then later on Capcom borrows a few of the moves in this game for some of the Street Fighter cast to use (e.g. Yun and Yang uses some of Lee's moves like the leaping punch and the rising kick respectively)
@AlphaT0kairu Been done in some pre-SF1 fighting games. There's even a Muai Thai boxer in Culture Brain's 1985 Hiryu no Ken arcade game, known outside of Japan as Shanghai Kid, which was even the first to feature special moves and a combo system.
Can you help me out. Theres this game with a blonde guy who wields a sword, sometimes switches weapons to an axe. Anyways he can switch partners with a dinosaur I think. Its a platformer and in the game u have the ability to run fast. It's an old game which could have been a sega game. It has nice bright graphics which i like too.
@ZeoSilver Actually, most gamers outside of Japan don't look deep enough to see some originality inside these fighting games. For the Fighter's History series, it was the first to feature a special visitor from another game, which is Karnov (before SNK added Ryo Sakazaki to Fatal Fury Special, and Akuma in X-Men: CotA). It also featured a weak point system and some characters that correctly speak their native languages.
And now , A street fighter reference using the characters in this game:
Karnov and clown are on the pedestal , waiting for the champion, Mizoguchi. The people in the crowd can be heard whispering...( where is the champion, where is Mizoguchi) Ryu's ending music for Streetf Fighter 2 plays , then the screen shifts to Mizoguchi being carried off by his sensei , the music stops right at the shift and Mizoguchi's ending music plays.. the end.
I realized that this game had sound effects from Super Street Fighter II which Capcom tried to sue Data East but failed once again. Unfortuatly, Data East went bankrupt 10 years after the release of Fighter's History. Despite Capcom's court losses to Data East, it is still in business and I told Capcom to work with G-mode.
@ThePatrickinator They don't sound exactly alike. FHD's are slightly higher pitched.
How come SF fans allow SF to be modeled after Yie Ar Kung-Fu, and not let FH be modeled after SF? Japanese call them tributes, while Americans call them rip-offs. SF isn't 100% original, only partially original and partially unoriginal. Reikai Doushi had a Chun-Li looking fighter in 1989. Before anyone runs at the mouth about "rip-offs" and what not. I suggest they try out the games first before anything.
SF 1 Ryu is just a guy in a white Gi. but, that's an archtype of a martial artist. Not a rip-off. Neither Karate Champ or Dragonball came up with that,
Whereas comparing SF 2 Ryu to Mizoguchi, who not only has a similar appearance - but also identical moves (they're basically shoryuken, hadoken and tatsumaki sempo kyoko), animations and stances.
@sparkydeltorro Before Ryu had his spin kick, Ryuhi from Shanghai Kid (1985) and the rest of the Hiryu no Ken series had it.
Mizoguchi's similar-looking moves don't exactly match Ryu's. Ryu's flying uppercut goes diagonally upward, while Mizoguchi's dashes toward his opponent, then goes straight upward, like Syoh's in Dead Dance and Tiger's in Joy Mech Fight, all 3 created in 1993. Ryu's fireball is generic looking, and is shot like Son Goku's. Mizoguchi's fireball is shaped like a tiger.
@sparkydeltorro For other differences, Ryu is usually as serious as Bruce Lee, and was of course modeled after typical karate fighters in gi outfits and probably Kenshiro (also influenced by Bruce Lee).
Mizoguchi is a 'crazy but serious' high school delinquent from Osaka who is in his late 20s after being held back repeatedly for many years, and was modeled after Momotaro Tsurugi, a manga/anime character from Sakigake!! Otokojuku, created two years before Ryu and the SF series.
I want to make clear though, I'm not bashing this game. Its still good. Capcom just a company at the end of the day I'm sure they took influence from other things. I'm just saying its hard to deny that many games (including this one) emulated SF2 and often clearly imitated its characters. And I think the similarities drawn between Ryu and the characters that predate them aren't as large or as deliberate as he ones that preceeded them.. If that makes sense.. anyways :).
@13223rds Clone? More like a tribute to Capcom's masterpiece - a congratulatory rendition of a genre that was perfected by SFII, yet omnipresent since the heyday of Karate Champ and Yie Ar Kung-Fu. Despite FH's controversy, it was an out-and-out success.

its funny really... Capcom tried to sue Data East because of how similar Fighters History and Street Fighter II were including in characters and move sets and insertions. In the end however Capcom wasn't able to prove they were similar enough.
However if Capcom did succeed in the lawsuit it would've hurt the growth and expansion of fighting games in the long run, many games simply wouldn't have existed.
@Resuteru Several people in Japan who know and love the Fighter's History series a lot said that none of the other SFII inspirations released between 92 and 93 like Namco's Knuckle Heads, Atlus' Power Instinct and Konami's Martial Champion never came even close to the original Fighter's History's smooth chain combo system - and that's probably why Capcom (OF AMERICA) sued Data East. Fighter's History Dynamite was Data East's answer to Capcom's SFII Champion Edition, Turbo and other SFII updates.
of course this is a poor copy of street fighter 2 look at misoguchi he is the ryu here but with bushy eyebrows.....just listen to the music where you pick your fighter is the same fuckin music.......capcom didnt succeed????
then tell where the hell is data east? what have they done since .........
This game was a failure on so many levels! It's unbelievable that Capcom wasted money suing these assholes when they could have let Data East fall into it's usual abysmal failure like it always does...
@SonnyAMan The main reasons why Capcom sued Data East instead of others is that the original Fighter's History hit the successful charts in Japan way over most other modern-fighting games, due to it having a smoother chain combo system while being a tribute to Capcom's masterpiece - a congratulatory rendition of a genre that was perfected by SFII, yet omnipresent since the heyday of Yie Ar Kung Fu.
Mizoguchi was actually modeled after Momotaro Tsurugi from Sakigake!! Otokojuku.
@MRX31605 One reason why Capcom lost against Data East in court was Data East's largest complaint saying that their 1984 arcade hit, Karate Champ, popularized all of this. Despite the controversy surrounding the court case that followed it, the first Fighter's History arcade (1993) was an out-and-out success for Data East, especially in Japan. So it was great to see the game return in an updated, tweaked-to-perfection, excellent sequel, Fighter's History Dynamite.
Mizoguchi's portrait is almost exactly copy of Ryu's from Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
Also, the fighter select screen's music is also an exact copy of Street Fighter's. Well... you know what they say, imitation the best form of flattery.
So, I guess the people at Data East REALLY liked Street Fighter.
@ZaamTheMan Data East created a lot of their own answers to other arcade games. Super Break (their first game) - Breakout BurgerTime - Donkey Kong + Pac-Man Lock 'n' Chase - Pac-Man Karnov - Super Mario Bros. + Contra Chelnov/Atomic Runner - Contra (with automatic scrolling) Bad Dudes VS. DragonNinja - Shinobi Heavy Barrel - Commando or Ikari Warriors Midnight Resistance - Contra (with rotating joystick) Edward Randy - Strider (with automatic scrolling) Magical Drop - Puyo Puyo or Bust-A-Move
Could you do a Playthrough on the first Fighter's History, could you do Ray, and Mizoguchi is not,I repeat NOT close to Ryu. Glad Data East went bankrupt, because they just soiled the good name of Street Fighter.
@AJ15ist Being innovative isn't always necessary, it's mainly enjoyable quality that matters. Data East had to develop their titles as damn good as possible.
Data East actually filed for bankruptcy because of the world economy, the same cause of the bankruptcies of Toaplan (scattered into splinter companies), Technos Japan (resurrected as Million Co. Ltd.), SNK (resurrected as Playmore then renamed SNK Playmore), ADK (merged into SNK Playmore), Video System, TAD, Kaneko, SETA, UPL and Cing.
@cubex55 Some sources say that Makoto Mizoguchi was modeled after Momotaro Tsurugi from "Sakigake!! Otokojuku".
Although, he clearly became the protagonist of "Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!!" and "Garou Densetsu vs. Fighter's History Dynamite", while becoming a special guest in Data East's Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty (a.k.a. Dark Legend) sequel, Suikoenbu Fuun Saiki (with Liu Yungmie) and The King of Fighters Maximum Impact: Regulation A.
@VesperStudiosINC *looks at SF* …..Ryu, Ken Akuma, Sakura, Dan, Guy, Sean, Goken and Shenlong (to some extent). They have some differing moves but they all share most of the same movements making a vanilla hold over the hold group, if you can play as one you most likely can play as them all.
Fighter's History series has a more unique roster. Mizoguchi might have some similarities to Ryu, but they don't fight alike. Look closer at both of them and you'll understand why.
Few days before you said that, I already learned about Ray being the protagonist. Mizoguchi's spin-off and special guest appearances made me and several others misunderstood. Ray appearing in the center of the flyer of the first game, Ray standing in front of everyone else on the FHD flyer and cover, Ray punching the screen with Karnov on it in FHD, and Ray's endings doing something special with Karnov.
@MasterO2 They are similar, because they were created by the same person, who also created Irem's Moon Patrol and Kung-Fu Master arcades, the first Street Fighter, the Neo-Geo MVS and AES, some late-80s SNK titles and early Neo-Geo titles, and founded Dimps who developed The Rumble Fish 1 and 2 for Sammy.
Saying Ryo Sakazaki is a rip-off of Ryu is like saying that Mickey Mouse is a rip-off of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
@The100thAttempt Japan praises this more than Americans and Europeans do, not because of how Americans and some Europeans consider them a bizarre region, but because they know more about it and believe it's not as bad as Europeans and especially Americans think.
Well, Data East did both Karnov and this game (also Bad Dudes, which has Karnov as the first boss), so they threw him in as the main villain. That's about all there is to it. Not much plot beyond that -- it is a fighting game, after all.
Well, it's kind of the same deal with Geese appearing in both the Art of Fighting series and the Fatal Fury series. Or Donkey Kong appearing in Punch-Out Wii.
@Boonehams This was even before Ryo Sakazaki appeared in Fatal Fury Special (who gave the idea of the KOF franchise) and Gouki / Akuma appeared in X-MEN: Children of the Atom (who gave the idea of the X VS. Capcom franchise).
@muesproductions Data East also brought other characters from other arcade classics like the Ox from the Karate Champ arcades for FHD/KR, and Chelnov from Atomic Runner Chelnov for Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!!
@Nerdillionaire Because of Data East's largest complaint that tells about their 1984 arcade hit, Karate Champ, started it all in popularizing the fighting game genre. In other words, the 1984 Karate Champ arcade is the "PONG of fighting games" or "first successful fighting game".
@OMGulator It is not a 'direct copy' (as Capcom argued), but a tribute to Capcom's masterpiece - a congratulatory rendition of a genre that was perfected by SFII, yet omnipresent since the heyday of Yie Ar Kung Fu.

MHMemeDoubleYourFun 1 year ago
@SonnyAMan It wasn't a failure, it was an out-and-out success, despite the court controversy.
Data East was wanting to do the same kind of thing Namco did with Tekken in competing against Virtua Fighter.

Could you do a Playthrough on the first Fighter's History, could you do Ray, and Mizoguchi is not,I repeat NOT close to Ryu. Glad Data East went bankrupt, because they just soiled the good name of Street Fighter.

And what of the other fighting games? Like World Heroes?
geekgo4 2 years ago
@AJ15ist Being innovative isn't always necessary, it's mainly enjoyable quality that matters. Data East had to develop their titles as damn good as possible.
Data East actually filed for bankruptcy because of the world economy, the same cause of the bankruptcies of Toaplan (scattered into splinter companies), Technos Japan (resurrected as Million Co. Ltd.), SNK (resurrected as Playmore then renamed SNK Playmore), ADK (merged into SNK Playmore), Video System, TAD, Kaneko, SETA, UPL and Cing.

Plus why did you use Mizoguchi, why not Ray.

I wanted to show how close he is to Ryu ;)
cubex55 2 years ago

@cubex55 in other words show how close this games is to street fighter. ergo, shoto-clone

This has been flagged as spam show
@VesperStudiosINC *looks at SF* …..Ryu, Ken Akuma, Sakura, Dan, Guy, Sean, Goken and Shenlong (to some extent).

No, Ray is.
AJ15ist 2 years ago
@AJ15ist

This isn't really any more of a SF2 ripoff than tons of other games at the time...
The100thAttempt 2 years ago 8
@The100thAttempt I think this is a sequel to Fighter's History, which as far as I know is the only fighting game Capcom sued for being too close...
Ui2019 1 year ago
@Ui2019 Yet Capcom USA didn't turn around and sue SNK for Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting, whose moves totally rip off Ryu's.
MasterO2 2 months ago
@MasterO2 They are similar, because they were created by the same person, who also created Irem's Moon Patrol and Kung-Fu Master arcades, the first Street Fighter, the Neo-Geo MVS and AES, some late-80s SNK titles and early Neo-Geo titles, and founded Dimps who developed The Rumble Fish 1 and 2 for Sammy.
Saying Ryo Sakazaki is a rip-off of Ryu is like saying that Mickey Mouse is a rip-off of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
MHMemeDoubleYourFun 2 months ago
@The100thAttempt Japan praises this more than Americans and Europeans do, not because of how Americans and some Europeans consider them a bizarre region, but because they know more about it and believe it's not as bad as Europeans and especially Americans think.

what's the story with this game? what does it have to do with Karnov?
muesproductions 2 years ago 2
Well, Data East did both Karnov and this game (also Bad Dudes, which has Karnov as the first boss), so they threw him in as the main villain. That's about all there is to it. Not much plot beyond that -- it is a fighting game, after all.
Boonehams 2 years ago 3
yea i remember him in Bad Dudes. Never made sense to me how they made the protagonist in a game a villain out of nowhere with zero explanation haha
muesproductions 2 years ago
Well, it's kind of the same deal with Geese appearing in both the Art of Fighting series and the Fatal Fury series. Or Donkey Kong appearing in Punch-Out Wii.
Why are they there? Two words: Fan service.
Boonehams 2 years ago 5
@Boonehams This was even before Ryo Sakazaki appeared in Fatal Fury Special (who gave the idea of the KOF franchise) and Gouki / Akuma appeared in X-MEN: Children of the Atom (who gave the idea of the X VS. Capcom franchise).
MHMemeDoubleYourFun 1 month ago
@muesproductions Data East also brought other characters from other arcade classics like the Ox from the Karate Champ arcades for FHD/KR, and Chelnov from Atomic Runner Chelnov for Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!!

@muesproductions Find the instruction booklet and read its plot pages.

capcom thought so too....but....they lost the case lol
Nerdillionaire 2 years ago
@Nerdillionaire Because of Data East's largest complaint that tells about their 1984 arcade hit, Karate Champ, started it all in popularizing the fighting game genre. In other words, the 1984 Karate Champ arcade is the "PONG of fighting games" or "first successful fighting game".
MHMemeDoubleYourFun 1 year ago
@OMGulator It is not a 'direct copy' (as Capcom argued), but a tribute to Capcom's masterpiece - a congratulatory rendition of a genre that was perfected by SFII, yet omnipresent since the heyday of Yie Ar Kung Fu.
