@FlamingFury5 - oh no, another person victim to the crap spewed out of FOX news. little does flamingfury5 know that conservatives and liberals alike screwed us over.
oh, and sea shepherd is mainly australian and european.
ok why don't they just move away from the larger coast guard ship. they are the COAST GUARD and they have the larger vessel so the should have the right of way no matter what
good question, its because its easy to make money from people these days. The funny thing is that the people so worried about the harp seals are too stupid to realize there are species actually endangered.
When your supporting the same cause as Pamela Anderson and Perez Hilton you should really think about looking into it....
The poster is a complete idiot - The Sea Shepherd is NOT an American registered vessel. It is dutch registered and from what I understand there is a reason for that in which case I suggest you look that up. Regardless the CCGS operated within compliance on International maritime law, which is something that can't be said for the Sea shepherd.
So, they got this boat seized (hate to say it, but imagine if the US navy seized this ship, world would have gone bonkers). Anywho, so now they get the Steve Irwin and fight Whales in the Antartic? How does that work. Is their a Seal season?
the coast guard had every right to ram the sea shepperd as they were aiming the ship directly toward the workers. it was for their safety.
i'm so tired of you people not being able to see how mob mentality spreads like cancer. every page i visit i encounter commenter after commenter lopping the idea of murdering seal hunters. when most of you, like XB70 consume all other forms of meat.
Interesting that unlike the Icelanders, the Canadian government refused to deploy any military power to prevent the decimation of their cod stock in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Today they have changed their philosophy and have decided to deploy their armed forces, only it's to facilitate the continued killing of their wild life. Ironic.
misconceptions is at rampant here. First, Sea Shepperd are not ecoterrorists. The ones killing the defenseless seals are the terrorists. Second, Sea Shepperd is a dutch registered vessel, not American. Third, The American government is equally incompetent and hypocrite. They did not demand the Japanese from stop doing illegal fish trawling and slaughtering whales.
1) The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.
2)terrorism is any act "intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non-combatants with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act."
I fail to see how killing an animal for it's hide or meat is terrorism. Either you are uneducated, or are mentally handicapped.
Well, the two statements don't qualify to Sea Shepherds. SS is not doing it for political purposes either threatens any governments. Stop burying your head in the sand and stop insulting people b/c of your own ignorance.
I try to be fairly well informed about things that I form opinions about. For instance, sealing appears to be regulated and also appears to be done in a fairly humane manner. (killing anything isn't pretty) If you watch a video of a cow in a slaughterhouse being stunned by a captive bolt pistol, it looks similar and the result is the same. The only difference is, nobody is parading pictures of slaughterhouses to the masses to get everyone emotionally charged about something.
Furthermore, I think that there are better things for people to be upset about. Coal companies are dumping coal slurry into rivers in West Virginia, heavy industry polluting the great lakes. The petrochemical industry in Sarnia, ON is causing a communities women to miscarry all male fetuses, due to pollution. Beluga whales dying of cancer in Quebec. Why don't the sea shepherd people tackle those issues? Greenpeace taking on France to stop Nuclear testing? That was a worthy. This isn't.
I won't argue what is worthy and not b/c each person has a different perception of value. What I am saying just facts. The biggest barrier to get anything done is the large percentage of ignorance and indifference among ppl. There has been lots of talking but no real actions for decades. SS decided to take actions to protect marine life b/c of the continued abuse and no government really cared to take any concrete actions to protect the ocean.
Watch at 2:15 - if you don't think there was any reason to ram the Farley Mowat, then you'll see here that the coast guard ship was trying to keep these self-proclaimed eco-terrorists from the workmen that they have vowed to terrorize. You can twist it some other way with your propaganda, but it's a good thing that these people were hauled into jail like the bunch of criminals that they are.
not much... but at least they physically did something to stop the Japanese from Whaling, and causing their hunt quota to drop by half... while Greenpeace followed them around and held up banners, what good did you think that do... not only did it waste valuable resources, but also pollutated the world's atmosphere... as we all know that the Greenpeace boat are floating air pollution... the Sea Shephard keeps every Government honest it terms of their usage of resources in the sea....
Do you think the world respect Greenpeace??? not really, because they are two of the same thing, your French master blew up the Rainbow Warrior and causing the death of two people, yet the Canadian government did not have the balls to utter word of discontent...... As i have said Sea Shepherd did declare itself environmental pirates....
Might i add that i do love how these terrorists are such hypocrites. They get pissed off when they are rammed by someone bigger than them, yet its okay for them to ram other ships no matter their size, attempt to strand vessels in a storm, vessels that they would not be able to tow to port in order to prevent loss of human life at their hands. I do get a kick out of that and am proud that the coast gaurd has stated that it will continue to act in this manner towards these eco-pirates/terrorists
Haha propaganda! Did you know that its illegal to kill a baby seal (pup) designated by "white fur".
Also did you know the "ramming" was actually to protect the seal hunters from having the ice floats that they are standing on rammed by the terrorist Sea Sheppard's terror ship which could have caused the deaths of innocent people. Therefore, the CCG cut off the terrorist SS ship from being able to endanger the lives of Canadian citizens, and i commend them for this, and it makes me proud!
actually there are videos on the net showing the Canadian killing seal pups.... but it does not detract from the fact that Canada harvest 100,000 + seals per year... when you people at the same time are shouting animal protection.... when your mining company are destroying the prestine beaches and forests to mine for oil shale and tar sand.. while at the same time your Greenpeace are going around other places shouting environmental protection slogan.... change start within.......
What is there to change? Although, I do disagree with the current methods of extracting the oil from the tar sands in Alberta, the fact is we need the oil and despite the environmental destruction, it is providing a huge income for anyone involved with it and that is why it will not change until it is done with and most of our fresh water is wasted in the process. That is a shame, but really, there is a massive bias towards the seal hunt because they are cute. Why not protect cows/pigs/fish/etc?
there is no difference between cows/pigs/fish/horse/bear/cat/dogs.... they are all animals... i am saying is that when you people complain about other's animal and environmental rights track records, please look at own one first
275,000 harp seal sentenced to death this year = environmental crime
Cows & pigs = farmed, not endangered in any way (though all killing is bad).
Fish = have many laws across the world, Canada guilty of massive over-fishing in past decades. Used to be 40-50 million seals and plenty of fish! Now only 3 to 5 million seals and few fish - WHY - Humans!
Watch the vid - it clearly shows CCG ship ramming into ice on which sealer is walking!
At least the Japanese can come up with research as the cover for its whale hunts... no wonder the Canada is so behind is so many things.... its Environmental Protection agency (i.e. Greenpeace) only targets foreign matters... when it comes to Canadian based violation, it does utter a word of discontent... double standards..
Um, Greenpeace *started* in Canada. Its international headquarters are in Amsterdam, I believe. There is a Greenpeace US, for instance. And Greenpeace Canada focuses on more important matters, like climate change. Oh, they have their own misguided or oversimplistic actions, but at least they are more elegant than
why are they so many idiots like you. Greenpeace, originally known as the Greenpeace Foundation, is a group founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1971 to oppose the United States testing nuclear devices in Alaska. While, the people who started Sea Shepard were also the founding members of Greenpeace, but they later split to start the Sea Shephard group, as they thought Greenpeace were not radical enough in their anti-whaling campaign...
(Sigh, *another* name-caller) Click on Contact on Greenpeace international's website: Amsterdam. As for the history, I know all that, worked for Greenpeace, read 'Green Rage', and the way you argue enforces the opinion I have of your type of radical activist.
well i hate hypocrites and Canada got a fair share of them... while they point out other's environmental and animal protection records, are they unaware what their footprints on the world are??? Change starts within....
Agreed there. A fist step: eat much less meat, the production of which accounts for 17% of GHG emission, IIRC. Eat local produce. Seal meat happens to be relatively local, abundant, free-range and happy, promptly killed (especially if the proper tool/weapon is used, hint: not a firearm from a moving vessel). Seal meat is just not very palatable to my taste, but maybe it's acquired...
Most of the animal rights activists who specifically target China are from Canada, yet when i question them regards to their massive annual seal hunt quota... all they can come up with is that they support it, because they are either considered unsustainable or pests... Then again what do you expect from the descendants of the French, whom 1 year after WWII was already suppressing the locals in its foreign colonies (i.e. Algeria and Vietnam)... while still receiving compensation from the German.
Apparently, the Canadian government is going to question Chinese authority regarding Animal protection, yet they are hunting these seal pups all year around, these hunter pretty much skin these animals alive. The Canadian government vow not to deal with China in any sort of business, but much of these Seal pelts are sold to Chinese and Russian markets. These Anti-Chinese attacks only started after They lost 2008 Olympics... most of the animal & environmental protection societies are Canadian.
Thanks for posting this - the story deserves a LOT more exposure.
I LOVE the fact the Fisheries Minister claims the little Sea Shepherd boat - going dead slow - was too close to the sealers and was a danger to them. So they send a 10000 tonne Coast Guard vessel charging in BETWEEN the Shepherd and the hunters!
Canada's gonna come out of this looking like more of a 'banana' (er, 'snowball?') republic than ever.
No problem, the Canadian is a weird lot.... they have been complaining about China and USA of course for everything they do, whether its human rights, animal protection or environmental protection... yet they could do no better on many of these issues... animal protections??? how many bear, moses hunts do they conduct each year (around 10,000+ ).. and seal hunts??? (100,000 ~ 200,000)... environmental protection??? not much considering how much oil shale and tar shale they are extracting...
Thank you Canada for standing up to these sea Nazi's.
