You're almost right. Funky was actually played by Jeff Martin who was also a writer for The Simpsons (during seasons 2, 3 and 4) and a long time writer for Letterman.

I wanna see the reprise moments, when the actor-singer comes to, and Paul says gleefully, "I think he's gonna make it!", and later we check on his progress and he's leaning against a piano, holding a mic and back to gloriously singing some old standards.
The show these days just doesn't go thre anymore.
