@TheVigilante2000 As I've been a farmer I can tell you it is the most hard working and unrewarding job I've ever had. There are so many restrictions...the government takes so much out...it makes it almost impossible to make a profit. I've worked for under minimum wage while I was there....you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the farm going. When the rain doesn't come at the right time...or something out of millions of things go wrong does..there goes more profits.There is never a day off

I would agree, if only farmers weren't so entirely dependent on the weather and increasingly expensive equipment just to stay competitive with the mega-farms that are slowly killing the little guy - factors they have zero control over.

@HHOJ For weather there is a little thing called crop insurance. As for being competitive vs. big farms, well that is more fundamental as to how the world works. You don't have a right to be a for profit farmer. If you can't make a profit, change your business model or go OOB. Simple.

I'm sick of hearing about how "Americans don't want to do farm labor jobs." Americans used to do them. They don't now because they are undercut by illegal aliens. It's not that we won't do hard labor, it's that we can't make a good living anymore. Would there be any americans willing to work as accountants for 25 cents and hour? Does anyone honestly believe they'd be willing to do the job they have now for some amount of pay significantly less than the minimum wage?

@BUDx2 Because Fox is recognized as a major station where people watch their favorite shows, and therefore the numbers are extremely skewed because people watch their local news after their favorite shows. CNN and MSNBC simply do not have that kind of viewer following. Silly guy.

It's been seven months and Congress hasn't taken any action in improving working conditions for these people. Instead, politicians partake in bickering over insignificant issues such as attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and NPR. And the media gets distracted by inane things like the Royal wedding and Charlie Sheen going insane, leaving important topics like this all but forgotten until it becomes politically beneficial.

Her last comment about many Americans already taking minimum wages jobs was ridiculous. Yes, there are A LOT of minimum wage jobs in this country and A LOT of them are far easier than picking fruits and vegetables. If you had a choice, and you do, between picking fruits and vegetables in the hot sun for 8 hours a day or working in an air conditioned McDonalds, flipping burgers, for the same pay, you would choose the latter. She should think about that before assuming that the number says a lot.

My respect for Stephen Colbert has always been wavering around a moderate level. Seeing him in this short segment just shot it way up. Way, way up.

We need more people like this, getting involved like this, and bringing attention to the real sides of the issues that affect us.
