Can anyone give me a price range on an pink/albino Axolotl? Please and Thank you. :D I really enjoy them, and would love to give one a loving home. <3
Sand is better than gravel or a bare base to the tank, but blood worms are fine as food. My axolotl is fully grown, I was told by a breeder that blood worms are great as a staple diet for him.
@josephmlong Looks like frozen bloodworms to me. However you might want to rethink the gravel, it can be quite dangerous for them. Sand or bare bottom tanks are much better.
@cog808 people captive breed them and sell them in pet stores otherwiseit is illegal to take an axolotl (endangered animal) out of their natural habitat.
I am trying to get into breeding these. They are extremely intellegent creatures. Axel (my Axolotls name) recognizes me and often tries to get my attention by standing on the rocks and staring out of the tank at me.
Also the gravel you have in your tank is a little small... axolotls have been known to suck up gravel while eating and it can choke them or get stuck in the digestive track.
there are so cool mine died because the aquarium water wasnt cool enouch i mean temparature, could do anthing about it do...expet place the tank outdoors in a shad, that wasnt a option whit a big ass tank ... there are realy nice animals, but dont expet to much of you wanna buy the its greaty fun at feeding time rest of the tme the sleep or lazy around much
2. you ca purchase them, but I recommend you buy them from an adoption forum. Google one in your area.
3. Like all salamanders, they have a massive range of diet. In the wild they eat fish pellets, any other organic waste, they will consume gravel (so never have an aquatic environment with gravel!!!! This will kill them.),
@natalbug89 I have kept my axolotl with a gravel bottom, using a gravel vaccume from time to time to clean out the tank bottom. He noms on them sometimes by accident, but spits them out. He's a good two years old now, never had any problems with the gravel.
my one does nothing intill I put food eneywere in the tank it will automaticly get up and serce the tank intill he eats it and goes back to doing nothin lol :D
OMFG I love these guys!!!!!!!! My old Study Hall room in highschool was an Advanced Biology room - the teacher had a big tank with one of these. There was a small bubbler in the back - the guy used to swim to the bottom and ride the bubbles up then do it again and again. He looked so happy when he did! xD
they are native to a pair of lakes in the mountains of central Mexico. one of the lakes has been drained to make way for urban development and the other is now a series of polluted canals in downtown Mexico City where the last of the wild axolotl will be eaten by introduced fish/die of pollution in the next couple years. Fortunately they have been bred in large numbers for decades now, for use in scientific experiments and can now be found in pet shops across the globe.
@TheaSinensisSerpenti ... I do not feel comfortable liking this as it is only stated fact, i mean it's good that they are not extinct, however i do not like the facts of the lakes being drained/losing their native habitat, being used for scientific experiments or bred to be sold in pet shops.... just doesn't sound so perfect....
@TheaSinensisSerpenti I do not feel comfortable liking this as it is only stated fact, i mean it's good that they are not extinct, however i do not like the facts of the lakes being drained/losing their native habitat, being used for scientific experiments or bred to be sold in pet shops.... just doesn't sound so perfect....
@Confruzzlement At least they're not extinct, scientific experiments mainly as in, examining the fact they they can grow back limbs. I'm thankful that they've been bred often, and it's not nec always to be sold in pet shops, it means that hopefully at a later date they can be introduced into a suitable wild environment.
their pretty much underwater animals although they can grow lungs if they needa adapt to land but fer the most part i suggest just leaving them in water where they do best
For those watching this and thinking about getting an axolotl, I would like to note that gravel of this size is inappropriate for axolotls as there is a risk of impaction (the axolotl swallowing the pebble and suffering because of it!!). Sand, very large stones (bigger than the axolotl's mouth), or no substrate at all are suitable choices.
i had those but could keep me water temparature low enouch so the got sick, realy pitty, the prefer water between 10 and 18 degrees celcius, but my tank was to hot beacuase of the lamps generate to much heat
Do you put the cubes in frozen or semi-frozen as I thaw them out completely but then you get just a mass of worms that disperse rapidly when they hit water but the one in this video seems pretty solid still.
I get a blood worm cube straight out of the freezer and cut into 4 cubes ( i have 3 axolotls 1 bigger than others) then get tweezers and lower down a quater next to the axolotl and he/she grabs it and eats it then if any bits disperse the others eat it because i have sand bottom they go and dig around to find bits that float off.
Thanks for that info. I think the problem I have is that my tank has small beach pebbles on the surface and uneaten worms get lost in the pebbles, hard for the axolotls to get to. I was going to use the sand on offer at the petshop I purchased my axolotls from but the owner of the shop said that the sand takes a few days to settle so I chose the pebbles as I was afraid of the axolotls swallowing the grit after reading online advice.
The shop owner thinks the axolotyls I bought about 2 weeks ago (£12.50 each I think but I bought feed and other accessories as well) are about 9 months old. They're about 5 inches long (12.5cm), one is white with pink gills (not an albino) and the other is natural brown/black mottled with dark brown gills.
I bought them from Preditors Pet Shop,
42 Commercial Street,
Shipley, West Yorkshire, BD18 3SP
Tel 01274 714344 if anyone's interested that lives near there.
they are tiger salamnders stuck in their larvae stage because they lack a certain hormone so they do not metamorphis and remain a larvae all their lives

mekkha 1 year ago 2
@mekkha You're absolutely right! That axolotl will readily ingest gravel that size leading to impaction which can be fatal.
Also, the frozen bloodworms are a poor choice of food for an axolotl that size....nightcrawlers would be much better.

Go to your local store and ask them if they carry them.
If not ask if they can order some.
here in the uk once a week ALL the pet stores with about 200miles go to tawnton and but stock from the market.
Your shop in Texas might be able to order them in for you.
