  • Classic part of the Hero's Journey. I'm going to quote Fight Club here as I believe it to be relevant.

"It's only after we lose everything, that we're free to do anything." Most if not all great hero tales have this in them. 2 thumbs way up for the actors here.Superb. simply superb.

  • i got confused when i saw this. when i saw him lying on his back, i thought he was dead proper

  • Extremely wise lesson taught here. Because our lives are finite, because eventually "tock" will catch up to us, it's much easier for us to find a cause worth dying for. It's good to have a moral goal towards which you're willing to sacrifice your life (for me it's my Christian faith) but make that goal something you aren't required to die to accomplish it. If Lorien asked me "do you have anything worth living for?" my answer would be "God."

    Good Day and God Bless

    Sincerely, LordGodsServant

  • So that where creators of "Avatar:The Last Airbender" took idea for his avatar training

  • "It's easy to find something worth dying for. Do you have anything worth living for?" I LOVE that line.

Why do you love that line?

    Maybe I'm just being stupid.

  • A quote from the writer/producer JMS about this scene:

"During the music spotting session, where I indicate where music comes in and goes out, my main note to Chris on that final sequence was, "Break our heart."

    He did. "

This is my favorite scene in Babylon 5. Profoundly moving. Thanks for sharing it here.

  • This is a touching and illuminating scene. Ideas about life, death, how to lie, and how to let go. Delenn said the flame represents life:right as Sheriden grows closer to death the fire dies down.

  • - I cannot create life, but I can breathe on the remaining embers. It may not work.

    - but I can hope

    - hope is all we have

  • This was smartly done....Premonition-foreshadow twine into a detailed and meaningful explanation for what we knew was going to happen. He would die and yet live. It was a story that was predicted yet interesting nonetheless.

  • Can you imagine? Living so long, being so old, that you have given birth to worlds. That you have watched the rise and fall of civilizations. And yet still able to reach out and help the younger races.

    Can you imagine?

  • @blueeyedcowboy17 kosh is actualy the titel not his name one is dead and another takes his place was it the good kosh or bad one that was killed i cant remember

  • @Dropspine sinclair is valan and he took b4 back in time with zathrus.Ivaniva delen sinclair and shairidan stole b4 and than stole it and the others got off . sinclair left a not to be opend at a spicific day when he got them all together i havent seen them in a wile so it is a little fuzy but i saw all the movies and every episode i wached at a convention the bluper real and a prevue of river of souls i am pritty big fan it is the best of all of the sci-fi shows the tec is the most pausibal

  • "What's so important? What have you got that's worth living for?"

    "Truuueeee looooove...."

This would be a great scene, if only I could stop thinking about the Princess Bride

  • @Gilari I love that to

  • i loved Lorien, brilliant character and one of my faves

  • and where is your favourite scene number one? :]

  • Man, even the vorlons would have trouble trying to decipher that. Is tachonic a real noun or word ?

  • Lorien is of photonic, tachonic service. He/she/it is the border of the universe, the universe which is you. When you walk the path of truth, the way out of the illusion so to speak, you will meet him as you will meet yourself within all things in the supposed end. All love, your captain .. Sheridan ^_^

  • Babylon 5 had so much interesting and thought provoking dialogue like this in its run. So many messages and little stories. It's so sad that the series has all but disappeared.

  • @Elusareth It's part of our culture now. Its up to - us - the fans and viewers to promote that kind of quality narrative , which has both a moral / ethical tale as well as an existential message, we are subtly richer for JMS's creativity in this regard.

  • @Elusareth But perhaps the most impressive thing they managed to do was to write a pairing between two main characters that actually worked. They didn't have them fighting and breaking up in every other episode of every season. And that is virtually unknown among the sci fi genre. It's always non-existent or down at teen drama level writing. See BSG for the most recent example of that.

  • Awesome scene, simply awesome!!

  • It's easy to find something worth dying for. Do you have anything worth living for?" I LOVE that line as well. alot of insight in this line, too bad it isnt talking to those that Yell Allah akbar then blow themselves up :p

  • @wickedcircle too bad my fellow muslim doesn't watch this, its a beautiful statement for the living... :D

  • And I know I'm commenting on this too much, but you have just got to love the phylsophocy behind the series - brilliant!

I've saiud it before and I will say itnagain - I'll die watching Babylkon 5, hyst as I grew up watching the series.

  • Wow, bad spelling day when I posted this.

  • I agree, I was never a fan of SciFi but Babylon 5 was at times brilliant and at times quite profound.

  • Just when you don't think Babylon 5 could get any deeper, it whacks you in the back of the head with the next episode!

  • Lorien almost seems like God. Like when Sheridan asks if Lorien will catch him and the rest. Its just... wow. They need to make shows like this more.

  • He's one of the oldest beings ever to have lived in the universe and doesn't age, doesn't die, doesn't suffer from illness or other natural causes we are prone to today, so in a sense, Lorien is a little like god

  • He was created by the universe .. so i'd say no

Great clip one of my fav's .. thx blueeyedcowboy17

  • according to human history, all it takes to be considered a "god" is if you can

    1. shoot lightning bolts

    2. walk on water

    3. heal the sick/raise the dead

    4. win battles

    5. not die/resurrect

    6. shine with rays of light

    7. control the weather

    etc

I bet Lorien can do all of that...so if he came to earth most of the population would be worshiping him

  • Yer I agree .. he still would not be a god though ; )

  • @Intranetusa I gonna place a bet here............ you're agnostic; are you not? I myself Am. oh what a pun! lol anyhoo Lorien quite clearly states to Ivonnova that his race can in fact be injured, or become ill and die. He simply has not. On a side note Just because people are willing to worship you as a god does not make you one. Oh boy, I just might have opened a phillosophical and theologial can of worms there but oh well.

  • Lorien's species can die from damage or illness.

He isn't one of the oldest. He is THE FIRST.

  • Almost like a god but not quite. I'd say the one major difference is revealed by Lorien's words - summarized, he can't create life but can keep life going.

  • Ok. Disagree, but got nothing to say about it. Nice. That's why I love the thumbs down

  • A very great scene here in this episode of Babylon 5. Lorien is trying to convince John Sheridan to let go of life, which Sheridan does, that is how Lorien is able to revive Sheridan. A very awesome scene. Lorien is awesome, thank god Lorien was in those caves at Z'ha'dum.

  • Best B5 moment ever.

  • Simply awesome.

  • This is one of my favourite moments of the series, and one of the best moments of television, period.

    Breaks my heart every time.

  • Vorlons are immortal barring violence, when Lorien met Kosh was god knows how long ago, a thousand years, a million?

  • When kosh tells them in the Deathwalker episode that "You are not yet ready for immortality" sort of implies that the vorlons are immortal, don't you think?

  • Yay, someone else did it for me lol Yeah, no way Kosh went back in time. But I do wonder how long of an average lifespan a Vorlon has.

  • But it wouldnt be impossible ofr it To Be Kosh as one of the Vorlons with Valen. Seeing as how the Vorlons are Energy based beings their lifespans would be many Millinia. And it would also explain why Kosh was Close to Sinclair, and also to Sheridan, as Kosh would know what Valen knew up to the point of the Time Jump, such as Kosh's death and Sheridan's importance.

  • Babylon 5, in my opinion, holds plenty of the best scenes in theatrical history. This is definitely one of them and one of my favorites.

Lorien's wisdom definitely is from one who has lived a long time, and what he says is so true that no one can argue or deny it.

  • I didn't think Lorien was sinister looking at the end of this clip. I guess, I'm bit too trusting. Wayne Alexander also played the Inquisitor/Jack the Ripper in an earlier episode when John realizes he truly loves Delenn. That was the first episode I saw of B5 and got hooked on the show.

  • I dont remember thinking he was good or evil at this point in the show.

I do remember thinking "this guy has an ulterior motive here".

Though i do remember being a little sus about him standing over Sheridan. But the music tends to lead towards benevolence rather then deception.

  • Lorien is the prime example of G'kars statement of "No one here is exactly what they appear." told to Catherine in season 1.

  • Definitely one of my all-time faves. Question: without the knowledge of all the episodes that came afterward, am I the only one who was unsure whether Lorien was a good or evil at this point in the story-line? He looks so very sinister standing over Sheridan's "dead" body at the end of the clip.

  • No. You're not alone on that. I'm not sure, but I think it was the writer's purpose to have the audience a little suspicious of Lorien. Some of his facial expressions seemed a little devious at times, and that notion was reflected when Garibaldi was staring at him in the security videos suspiciously after his personality was tampered with. Sheridan himself was suspicious of Lorien, at least at first. Having the audience feel the same way the characters do is subtle and effective emotionally

  • I didn't get the impression he seemed sinister at all. His facial expression looked thoughtful to me, like a sentinel watching over Sheridan's body, and I'm not the trusting kind when it comes to characters. But what you're describing would have been completely at odds with everything Lorien had been saying. Besides, how pointless to have him jump off a cliff and get rescued only to be killed by his rescuer?

  • I think you misunderstand my words. I didn't say Lorien had any ulterior motives, I said that perhaps the writer didn't want the audience to trust him so easily just as some of the characters in show did not trust him easily. Also, I'm not only talking about this scene, but other episodes as well

  • Absolutely brilliant, this scene and the others got my through my teens

  • :) I know what you mean, friend.

  • Excellent scene, one of my most favorites too! "I will watch and catch you if you should fall", oh I was blown away at how a seemingly simple thing that Delenn said as a joke back in season 3 worked so vitally here in the beginning of season 4. THIS is why I love Babylon 5 so much!

  • Spectacular scene - thanks for sharing!

  • no worries :) Yeah, I love this scene. Wayne Alexander is such a talented actor. I like his voice.
