  • Science may fail to explain the soul, but mysticism fails to explain most of physical reality, so I'll throw my lot in with science.

  • i think the best video ever....no picture - no distraction just genius.

  • I do not like this. I LOVE THIS. Poetry, pure poetry, and not just because it's a beat poem. Because it's true, and we all know it. It's relatable and funny, and witty, and true. Fabulous!

  • @ChundyUndies lol why?

  • @karinefizzy he's a racist homo.

  • @ChundyUndies I get what you're saying, but please don't use homo to suggest that someone is a bad person

  • @karinefizzy hes probably some die hard christian or Muslim.

  • From a tiny insignificant bit of carbon... we are doing pretty good. :D

  • When I need medicine I consult a doctor and trust medicine knows best. Sure naturalistic cures that can be proven to work, become what we call 'medicine'. Chances are some of these were first found in tribes with Witch Doctors, or in hippy camps with people who study herbs and their effects. Science is still science if you do it with flowers in your hair! I don't think I miss the point. The point seems to be hanging shit on everything as intelligently as possible. Isn't that Tim all over.

  • Have to agree, the herbs that work are called medicine.. I wonder whatever possessed the person making the medicine to check if the herbs worked. Lol. Must have been a scientist, or someone very brave. I think the hippies aren't to blame for all the misinformation, and religion and science are completely different. One is adaptable to new ideas, the other is dogma set in stone (or so it seems). Hippies are more likely to be adaptable. I don't really care either way.

  • My name is Storm. I am only like this sometimes! But yeh LOL This is furnyy!

  • so many people i want to show this to, chief of which at the moment is Phsycic Sally!

  • i can relate to this so well, he should have included something about people not having their kids vaccinated

  • The people who disliked this are the Storms of the world.

  • playing with a compass today in maths, made me think of this <3

  • Oh. My. No God.

This is AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOME. I had great respect for Tim before, but now...

  • Love is a fabricated emotion.

    Tim is brilliant.

  • brilliant, brilliant, brilliant

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD... THERES A FUCKING CHRISTIAN AD ON THIS PAGE

  • @BigBadNightWolf LOL, I get that all the time, whenever I watch a video with atheistic content, there is some stupid christian ad :-) (I'm in Western Europe btw)

  • & I guess we might as well be back in time, for all the chance Tim Minchin will change his mind... Hippies have their place, I wonder who first found out that wood could be used for medicinal use.. I can be sure it wasn't someone thinking all those who don't know medicine are up to no good. The witch doctor's herbs, even if they are now used as medicine, having been scientifically proven to work, started out as someone's little magic 'that worked'.

  • @IBImogen the person who found out wood could be used as medicine Dr.Hippocrates(name sound familiar?) around 400 bc.The great thing about science is it doesnt shut any doors its open to anything as long as it can be scientifally proven to work. While most naturallistic cures cant be proven and the ones that can...is just medicine. and for the ones that arent proven people go on rants about drug compaines and how they stop it from happening because it would hurt sales. aka the point on the song

  • @IBImogen Those herbs you speak of still don't work *just* because the hippie believes they work. They work because they have some component that has that effect.

And that was proven by science and not by sitting around thinking happy thoughts and chanting. aka the whole message of the song. Or did you miss the alternative medicine that has been proven to work is called medicine part?

  • @IBImogen

Way to miss the point. :)

  • @IBImogen Then it wasnt fucking magic was it?

  • lol, i can't believe there are 9 other amitais!

  • Science and Religion both suffer from dogma and doctrine but are not defined by them. Faith and Religion are not the same thing - just as Science and Faith are not the same thing. It is nonsense to suggest that religion does not adapt to new evidence although some religions have become very slow to adapt! Science does not seek to fulfil the same human needs as religion and so cannot replace religion with a "most true" version of reality.

  • @cphmau Which 'human needs'? Maslow's heirarchy says nothing about talking to an invisible cosmic imaginary friend.

  • Both the characters in this "song" are morons. Religion is a science - and one of the first ones. It's a primitive science that looks at what happens to people and tries to explain it. Naturally with very little "evidence" to use - some religions have ended up pretty harmful - like some science has. I believe that truth, god and love are beyond the comprehension of humans - but I applaud anyone who has the heart to search.

  • @cphmau Whaa? By definition, religion demands that you accept its teaching on faith.

Science demands that you question its assertions and test them through experimentation, and the hypotheses that don't survive experimentation are discarded.

Religion claims unchangable absolutes. In science, -everything- is subject to revision and improvement as more information becomes available. Religion holds central teachings static. Science, on the other hand, is self-correcting. They're not the same!

  • Ever thought about writing an opera!?

  • Funny that, that Dara O'Briain came out with a lot of the same material shortly after this....

  • This is fucking amazing, also i can't believe how little amount of religious haters have disliked this video? o.O

  • @dkill77 Don't you mean Religious lovers? This sort of backs up the anti-theist view, as it is mostly saying "go science" religious haters also think "go science" etc.... Those heavily religious would dislike this video, as it's all about beating down their crazy views.

  • Wow, its really good, i love beat poems, this is so cool

  • I have known Storms. They are contemptible human beings.

  • I'd like to think Tim, Carl Sagan, and P.C. Hodgell would throw a gigantic empiricist kegger in the afterlife...

If such a belief didn't align me with the likes of Storm ;P

  • What's most interesting is people saying the paranormal cannot be measured.

Sure it can, most of it anyway, and the measurement of the paranormal is....

    Nothing.

  • The stereotype of the main character is even more annoying than that of the Storm character.

  • Hi Niflheim, I don't see a problem. However there is a simple conundrum: if you raise more questions than you answer you end up with an ever expanding list of questions...

  • im so proud of my sister kei phillips for her animation work on this video especially the fairy tattoo you must be so chuffed love you x

  • Whether Tim likes it of not, science raises more questions than it answers - so think about that for a while and tell me where that gets us? He's funny and he is clever but he hasn't done his research very well. In fact he is as vacuous as his hippy girl - and is spouting an equally jaded series of clichés. If I had 5 bucks for every angry materialist who I have heard go down this sink hole I'd be Bill Gates.

  • @cphmau Yes, science raises more questions... but we have still made great progress by solving the first questions. For example, we may not understand everything about our solar system, but thanks to scientific enquiry we know enough to have an accurate (enough) calendar, which has been hugely beneficial. I don't really see what the problem is?

  • @cphmau Just because science raises more questions than answers doesn't mean it's a bad thing. It's better than not pursuing answers at all and just thinking "It's because of this big mystic overlord", raising more questions gets us ever closer to understanding more and more.

  • You've done nothing to defend what he attacked... you simply attacked back...

  • How many social engagements have I been to that were just like that? Many, many, many. Why should the rubbish opinion be allowed but rebuttals be disapproved of? If you put forward an opinion at a social gathering it rude not to expect disagreement.

  • Errm, did anyone else contemplate their beliefs after this? Despite me being athiest I did.

  • Midsummer quote! LOVE IT!

  • brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I will take a compass and carve "FANCY THAT" on the side of my cock!

  • Oh yes, I just went through a glass of rum and a couple chocolates to the pace of this beautiful piece. I believe this will be the culmination of my evening, priming a good night's rest.

  • watch?v=8XF99hbsKWQ I FOUND STORM!

  • @heycharlieathome AHAHAHAHA

  • @heycharlieathome Well if the soul DOES exist, that just destroyed mine.

  • Does anyone know what the backing track is by any chance?

  • @MonsBadonicus its a number of loops off of Mac's garage band, actually.

  • Anyone know what the backing track is called? I recognise it from somewhere...

  • @Flamefrog It sounds like an early Series of Derren Brown.

  • This man is a genious.

  • Ive decided that TIm doesnt hate religion, he just hates stupid people and Hippies

  • @Machinehead645 Unfortunately there tends to be a pretty big correlation between religion and those stupid people and hippies.

  • @paintballwizard239 I get that a lot, Im christian and I find this video hilarious, I love Tim Minchin. Theres a type of christian that makes up a lot of the christian community, the intolerant, homophobic, republican douchebag christian. They make every christian look like that which is faaaaar from the case. =P

  • any bit of MAGIC

    sufficiently well hyped

    is indistinguishable from TECHNOLOGY!

  • Love this man!!

The best thing the world can do is keep Tim Minchin a secret and at the level he is now, so we can all keep him at the genius level he is, to ourselves!!!!

I made the mistake of telling all my mates about oasis and Eddie izzard in the early 90's.... lets not let it happen again!

Look forward to seeing you in April Tim!

  • @VimFuego72 I am completely in love with both Tim Minchin and Eddie Izzard XD

  • Holy shit, my ears just came.

  • *applause*

  • Science adjusts its views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved.

  • @Dan272121 This is a throwaway line from Tim.... Science is based on what we can observe, quantify and test with extremely limited senses / equipment. Faith is based on what we can observe in the nature of the principles that allow things to exist.

  • @cphmau I don't disagree with it being a throwaway or that it should at least be seen in the context of the rest of the speech, but faith is, by its very definition, absurd because the object it pertains to can not be proven or deduced or is even necessary in any way, shape or form. I don't need to believe in a knife, but it can still cut me. The same can not be said for metaphysical objects such as gods or the paranormal, because their influence can not be measured in the physical world.

  • Tim, advice from another Tim... your wife must have learned by now that it's not a mere temptation -- it's an obligation to the people in our company to show them sufficient respect which demonstrates that we care enough about them to give them the truth. The storm characters realize that they DEPEND on people not laughing at their ludicrous inanities out of mock civility when true civility demands otherwise.

That which can be destroyed by the truth, should be.

  • @CodeSculptor "truth" ? what is your understanding of that term?

  • @cphmau That which describes, comports with, and reflects reality -- ie., not fantasy.

  • Moral of this story, Never argue with Tim Minchin.

  • i really love this guy! Hes wonderful! :)

  • such a brilliant artist, i love people like storm, such fun to discuss with

  • I love this so, so so very much!

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to Colorado... I'll buy you a beer!

  • This is the song that got me into Tim's music. Makes me happy to listen to.

  • I was an Eminem fan until I watched this.

  • This is so true! Thumbs up if you agree :D

  • excelent .

  • I'm a huge Tim Minchin fan... when I saw Storm live I thought it was fantastic.

However, I can't help thinking that it's all just a bit contrived... His turning into Frankie Boyle with his insane desire to do nothing but offend people who slightly differ in their opinions.

I'm not Religious, and I'm not a hippy... but let people believe what they want to believe. He's a smart man, but he's not smart enough to solve all of the mysteries of the world... stop trying

  • @FriendsAnybody He can't have a message?

Maybe he doesn't just want to be a clown. Maybe he wants to be like alot of other great comedians and have something of substance to say. To me, it sounds like he just expressing his opinion rather than just trying to offend people. Also, yes, people can believe in what they want, but wouldn't most people be open to hearing opposing views. Maybe it's just me, but hearing other people opinions seems like a good way to better yourself and your convictions.

  • @FriendsAnybody He's not saying he knows the answer to everything, quite the opposite. He's saying that just because you can't explain it doesn't mean it's magic or the power of Jesus or whatever.

  • @Dannyowen555 Well said!

  • @FriendsAnybody By all means let people believe what they want to believe but if they try to preach it to you or try to impose it on you let them have it with both barrels. Human rights includes the right to a smack in the face if you piss people off.

  • Tim's right :') Why believe in God or the afterlife... When we live such a short life. Why give time away to something that doesn't exist! Haha. If God does exist. I'll pick Tim over him anyday :P

  • I am always struck by the power of the "Isn't this enough" moment. So. Freaking. Right. I love that hidden in the middle of this bitchy-funny-derisive tirade he plops down an entire life philosophy in three simple words. Oh. He is GOOOD.

  • So... What did she say in response to all that? D:

  • Mr Michin, I do hope your not implying Santa does not exist. For, Christmas is coming up, and you won't get any presents from him if you don't believe!

  • Opine was my word of the day today!

  • Im cant wait to see Tim tonight! ;)

  • *Saves this for the next time she meets a hippy*

  • Fancy that...

  • Not only it is fun as hell, but it is soooo true XD

  • Great performance and great beat poetry. We've come a long way since Howl. I've got a folk tribute to all artists, especially, the tragic ones. Features poets painters and musicians. It's called the broken and the beautiful. poets are living things of beauty; therefore they're a joy forever.

  • Is it just me, or has science explained love in hormones?

  • Do you know what they call alternitive medicine that has been proved to work? Medicine. Best line ever!!! XD

  • @ilovedaddy9090

it is and tim isnt the first to say it

i cant remeber who did but ye

  • @thecureye I think it was Dara O'Briain

  • @thecureye I think many people say it, I've heard good old Richard Dawkins say it before

  • tim is a genius - but he is wrong about Santa!! :D

  • 333,033 views - woooo

  • @oliverolive thats half the devil times 1000 plus 33 then o:

  • This is fantastic, i wonder if Richard Dawkins has heard it, Id love to see his reaction.

  • SCOOBY DOOBIE DOO!!

  • Tim, I love you. No, I really love you but MJ didn't have face lifts. Science adapts.

  • @Lastaccountgothacked nothing else rhymed with gifts... lol

  • @DragonJSP sifts, drifts , shifts, lifts, rifts

  • I love the fact that this is followed by adverts for psychics...

  • 3:03 -- Oh God my ribs!

  • I wish I could express myself so eloquently, especially in the face of smiling vacuous 'christians' and their "Oh, my life is shit at the moment, but God has something planned, I just have to suffer a little more and he will show me the way" Does it never to occur to these people to just get on with their #@%$ing life?????

So I just nod and smile back and think, "aww, poor delusional you"

Thank you Tim, you make the world a better place!

  • I love the Scooby Doo analagy, gotta remember that one next time I debate a religious dumbass.

  • 'Keeps firing off cliches with startling precision liek a sniper using BOLLOCKS for ammunition' LOL XD !!!BEST SIMILY EVER!!!

  • @steveogurule believing that people can talk to the dead and so on, is in my view just as crazy as believing in a dude that woke up from the dead and so on...

Tim has a point, aint the world/universe fantastic enough without us trying to add a lot of mystical bullshit?

  • @steveogurule yes twice as long. life expectancy in elizebethan england was around 40. and in the larger cities ie. london it was lower, around 35 years.

  • @steveogurule Chances are that anybody who hears what he says, did so voluntarily. If you didn't like it, don't listen to it again.

  • @steveogurule

"You know it's awesome to have opinions-but in a way that belittles others is just not cool."

You have a right to your opinions, but you don't have a right to not be offended. If you're afraid of ridicule, then maybe you should keep your ridiculous ideas to yourself.

BTW, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have dropped all the spiritual bullshit. Real knowledge is much more satisfying than nothing chops and wind pie.

  • @KemaTheAtheist

Dude said that making fun of people isn't cool, not that it should be illegal. Would you counter "Lying isn't nice," with the argument that free speech gives everyone a right to lie?

  • @ObsidianStray Dude is not making an argument that needs to be countered. It says nothing about whether something is right to say "that's not nice." If your opinion is so fragile that someone saying it's stupid is all it takes for you to change your mind, your opinion is probably wrong. If that's the case, people need to get over themselves and stop thinking "That's meeean!" is anything but a childish, whiny complaint. It's valid to make fun of people when they're saying something laughable.

  • @steveogurule He is not attacking people for their spirituality in this beat poem..... just their stupidity.

  • Tim Minchin, you may be insignificant, but you are amazing.

  • The last stanza brought a tear to my eye.

  • Isn't this enough? Hell no!

Where did all the giant robots go? Because they haven't been invented!

And if you are not yet offended, I'd be the opposite of Star, so hooked on science and still waiting for my Flying car!

And where you are, an insignificant speck? Well heck, I'm gonna be the master of the universe, and that's so much worse than waiting half a century and expecting fantabulous technology.

Time's up, the clock is broken, Funky Has Spoken.

  • ... There's no Santa?

  • Possibly the most creative and fluent poem ever written

  • I just adore this guy!

  • If I believed in any god, I would believe in Tim.

  • Minchin, come to America. If not we will hunt you down and rape you.

  • @Sayjo3 he has been to america

  • @killerdeathmetal18 I want a tour, not a few random hits over a spurt of time that doesn't correspond to my schedule. A tour allows for proper planning.

  • @Sayjo3 just hunt him down he does tour loads ^^

  • @Cazwells I have yet to see a set tour in America. All his dates this year and for the next 6 months are in Australia or UK. Also, following tour dates further back just takes me to that one time in Vegas. Where are you finding these loads of tours?

  • Genius. Hahahaha!

  • I love it!

  • Good sentiments, well expressed.

  • Well, this is the best thing I've ever heard.

  • i love him :)

  • Not only was that a great rant, but it managed to sneak in the best Louis Armstrong impression.

  • this was freaking great... at first i was like.. damn it.. im not gonna be able to see anything.. cause my imaginations is pretty fuck up.. but i am really glad i heard this..

  • Best freaking poem EVER!!!

I hate the dumb esoteric "Storm" type...

  • That was fun.

  • Tim is a fucking GOD!!! Except in this instance, he actually exists... ;)

  • @blackhearticedragon yet god is an act of faith, Tim is reality. :D

  • tim minchin: "when i die my last words will be 'now who's the world going to revolve around?' well that's the best i could come up with" haha bloody brilliant

  • @skillzdatkillz900 im stealing that and having it on my grave stone XD

  • @HulaHippy1 xD

  • you can honestly compare this guy with eminem......he should ghost write for rappers

  • this... is... so... FUNNY :D

i have to get more of that guy :D

  • I'm sorry the best part of this song is the metaphot "Like a Sniper using Bollocks for ammunition"

  • @Songremixer123

    *simile

  • you are a very smart person. me and my brother were talking about this before sleeping and quoting you. I think your views are brilliant and I love "you know what scientists call natural remedies that work? Medicine" You are just truelly brilliant.

  • Wish i could rant at moments like that, all i can do is cry and run away.

  • I kind of spaced-out a little of the ways through, and it started to sound like Russell Crowe stepped into a beatnik bar.

  • Tim Minchin is a god...er, I mean, a really awesome person.

  • @Atrocitas6 its ok to call him a god because hes been proven to exist.

  • Measures human societies take to protect most people from the worst of reality will unfortunately protect some people from all of reality.

  • This always really touches me... exactly my views.. the world is a beautiful place... part of the beauty is understanding the simplicity of the science behind how we came about etc.... why taint it with superstition and false religious hopes that ruin the magic of nature?!

  • This is awesome(:

  • I do not begin to pretend that I know Tim minchin, I simply know the circumstances in which he grew up, not personally ofcourse, but I do know that in terms of creative stimulants, australia is a hole, big, empty, and secluded (This being the case I admire Tim's success and wish that many other people educate themselves on the outside world) And for this reason, I, and many others.. cheer him on.

    "Australia - Gods waiting room"

  • Did you know this is the among the best things ever? This is pretty much every point I have ever wanted to make to my conservative, religious, faith-is-logical-because-I'm-too-lazy-for-research dad.

You win a reward, Tim Minchin. I don't know what, though. Just go to the store and pick something nice.

  • Minchin says the world is "unfathomable" when he is supposed to be making the point that it IS fathomable?

  • @lewisner

it all depends on the times..for example, to human beings, quantum physics is unfathomable. maybe one day it will be fathomable, but as of now, we cannot grasp it.

  • @itzahazylife Not to Quantum Physicists it's not.If someone can fathom it, it is fathomable. Are the workings of a TV set unfathomable?

  • @lewisner

actually, they don't really..they know what goes on, and can tell u some of the things that occur in the quantum world, but to actually make sense of some of the very strange things that occur, is a whole different story.

  • If you must watch telly, you should watch Scooby Doo: Well Scoob says thank you Free adverts are rare, so he'll do the same for you He's a big fan too He has recently discovered your DVDs, Finds your songs funny, clever and catchy and he is so pleased, That he sends this little dance Which he hopes might perchance Make some go take a fresh look at The Good Book (youtube search for Scooby Doo's Endorsement)
  • Hey, reading meridian lines is a real skill! How else can we read maps of the globe?

    Tim Minchin is my hero.
