Look at the great, great Gene Krupa on the skins, and for you budding drummers, look at the classic drumstick grip, not like the jokers in today's bands who look like they are slicing a side of beef.
Just watched it again after a few pints, still love it, still love Benny and most of all still love Gene, even though Chick destroyed him at the battle of the big bands, though, I think, Benny was to blame for the slower tempo of' ' Don't be that way', on the night Chick outwitted him and Gene admitted it 'Chick cut me to ribbons' he said, what a great drummer to accept he had been bested, but Gene is still the number one when discussing big band drummers, ask Benny.
Buddy was superb but he didn't have that certain something that Gene possesed, whether it was likeability, charisma or just plain 'I'm loving every minute of it' enjoyment that Gene projected don't know but I would sooner watch Gene in action any day.
Surprize surprize, I kind of thought so. I think it's wonderful that you could have a interest in that great stuff before your years. As we kids used to say (way back when) Keep on swinging >:D<
Notice how the drummers in all these great orchestras hold the sticks, correctly, these modern day jokers look more like they should be carving a side of beef.
TheBernie2201, You're one lucky guy. although I was fortunate enough to see the great Harry James orchestra in Southport, England, loved every minute of it, I would also loved to have seen the Chick Webb orchestra, remember the battle of the bands when they played 'Don't be that way' and, in Gene's words, 'Chick cut me to ribbons that night'? that must have been one hell of a performance from Chick who played a more up-tempo version than Benny's, sheer pleasure.
The Bernie2201, How I wish I could have seen Benny and the band in full swing, Harry James, Gene Krupa, what a line-up, still, we have them on disc and film, we should think ouselves lucky
If that's all there is it is still enough to keep the world turning, absolutely superb, been a Benny fan since 1957, still listening, still hearing little notes I never heard before, thanks Benny for years and years of pure joy, RIP, Thecubanism.
@Thespiella Yes, 87 next mo. I was there and what a thrill it was to see that band. i'll try everone to explain it The house lights go down and there is a hush. you hear the muffeld theam song "Lets Dance" from behind the curtin, and as it opens and the sound increases, and all hell breaks out. Icould go on and on. that what it was like and I'm glad to shear it with you
@Thespiella Hi. I get the impresion that you are very young. If you care to reply I'm curious about what got you on to this topic. In any case I think you are a very nice person x)..... what ever that means.
@TheBernie2201 Yep, I'm pretty young- only 15, haha. I've always liked vintage type things and so I started learning online about the culture of different decades (I LOVE the 20s - 50s!) I just love the music, fashion, movies, class, ideals! I'd always hear this type of music somewhere in and I needed to know the genre, and thats how I got into it! =)
yEs you know.. I love to just sit and listen to Jazz, Swing and some Blues... WHY am i the only one who do it like that in my school... You know... I hate these Hip-Hop Gangsta guys! They think, that they live in ghetto and they are soooo coool. I am just the only one making this style live in our country or WHAT? We want bands like Royal Crown Revue is!
@Kenbrick11 That is because today's music producers and TV bosses can't make money from Jazz - they want to promote the easy accessible rubbish that is the rage. But if you stick to this and you'll be ahead of averybody else in both knowledge and musical enjoyment. And try to make other listen to it too!
@jimicheesecake Haha! I was thinking the same thing today while driving twenty over the speed limit listening to a different version of the song by BG!
