Well, she was the last queen of Henry to keep her life and her dignity...He wasn't an easy man to be married to anyways, especially in his last few years...Give the woman a medal, because she certainly earned it by being married to a Tyrannical Mr. Grumpy-gills, especially for trying to reconcile his children with him before he died. At least he was civil and cordial to Elizabeth and Mary at the end-I give Katherine HUGE props for that, as well.

Please understand I do admire Queen Catherine and I respect her. She lived with a difficult man, in a strange time even for Europe. What I am saying is Catherine had to play Politics, she had to do what she did to protect her daughter as well. When you look at it closely all was done by her for the future of Mary. I applaud that. More so the Great King Harry was actually a great failure in just about everything he did in life. His reputation is greater than he is.

Kathrine was no saint but she was smart and wise and played her hand of cards perfectly. She had her relatives and world position to play against Henry and did it to perfection. Even though she lost in the end with Henry and England she defeated him on every score with in the rest of the European World. She probably did consummate her Marriage with Prince Author that is almost certain. She did hold her ground all the same. She played the people perfectly as well. always the victim. A great queen

Katharine of Aragon did NOT "almost certainly" consummate her marriage with Prince Arthur. Almost all historians agree that it is likely she told the truth, as her religious and moral convictions would not have allowed her to risk her soul on a lie.

I respectfully disagree. But that is what makes History great and interesting. The truth will never be really known for certain but by the two that where actually there. I stand on this as a guy and I would say that it would have been by the fact that Arthur and in his age would have jumped at the chance. More so expected of him and Catherine. Beyond that Catherine was a shroud player in any event. She had her spies and lawyers playing the Great Matter as well. She needed it to survive.

Katharine's older brother Juan died because he wore out his fragile health in his marriage bed. Given that Arthur was sickly, prone to rapid exhaustion, and malnourished, many historians (Fraser in particular, and perhaps even Starkey, it's been a year since I did a tremendous amount of research) believe it was a stipulation of their marriage that it not be consummated until he was older. I rather doubt Arthur could have managed it in his current state (but then again, maybe he could).

You might wonder why I care 400+ years later about something that may or may not have been true. I admire Katharine more than anyone else. I think she was a woman of astounding faith and principles, and to have her word of honor questioned is to question all her actions. It turns her from a deeply wronged woman to a manipulative one who went to her grave professing a lie.

Katharine did keep Mary in the line of succession, and made great personal sacrifices to do it, but I in no way believe she would have agreed to a marriage she believed was unscriptural. It goes against everything I have ever read about her.

But of course, you are entitled to your opinion, and I respect it -- even if I will never agree to it. ;)

Wow thanx again for you comments. I hope that I did not seem to make her manipulative, that is never my intention. I would say however survival would be part of the big picture and for her daughter as well. Either way, she is a great Queen Consort, more so from the most powerful Royal House of her time. Catherine will always be debated about her Marriage Night with Arthur. I am just looking at it as if I was a 16 year man of that time. Henry sure did in his documents.

I must confess : Katharine of Aragon is not my favorite character but I admire her strengh and her personnality. She was determined to defend her convictions and what she thought that was right.

Moreover, Maria Doyle Kennedy's performance is excellent. And I think that any other actress could play that role with more determination than her. She brings sweetness and pity to Katharine. That is only my point of view.

I had never paid much attention to Katharine prior to "The Tudors," and a tremendous amount of my turnover has to do with Maria's gorgeous depiction of her as a woman of great strength and conviction. Three episodes in and I became a fan of her for life -- not merely the actress, but the character as well. She was truly magnificent.
