Dr, Hofstader parle francais tres bien. Evidentment, il a etudie francais depuis il etait un petit parce qu'il a un accent tres authentique. Moi, J'ai apris francais depuis presque 4 ans, et je peux compredre tout ce que Dr. H dirait. Pas si nouveua--pas de tout. Lisez ses libre en l'anglais! (rough translation--he speaks very well, probably studied it when he was young because he has a great accent. I've studied french for almost 4 years and understood everything he said. Read his books!

He took it in school at the age of 13 and shortly thereafter spent a year in a French speaking area of switzerland. He has put a great deal of effort into studying French (and a great many other languages) throughout his life. His accent is pretty much perfect because he has paid excruciating attention to precise pronunciation.
