@insonita55 It has the potential to be though. Mid engine > rear. Porsche will continue to hold it back sadly. The next best mid engined Porsche will be the 961.
Too bad to think you own a car built to fill in the gap between the boxter and 911. know what that means? its not made to be the best, its made to fill in the gap..
@MichaelMellijor Dude, the cayman is a great track car. I get the feeling you got that car for the wrong reason. Mat I ask what you dont like about it??
@teamfee68 and too we got it as a bargain price, after we got it that's the time we knew the previous owner doesnt like it either. it was a mistake buying one, we could have get the 911.
I know ....i hate when people talk crap about this car. You know what fuck it...lemme just pull 60k in cash out of my ass since cash just falls out of it....yeah right....Poor mans 911 my ass. Its a fucking Porsche!
I love Porsche but why names Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera what's next the Geco? I mean 944, 928, 930, 917, 911, 912 sounds so much better I like number designations.
porsche made a monumental cock up when they made this. they themselves admitted the cayman had the ability to be faster than the 911 because of the weight distrubution, so they had a rival to the 911, made by prosche that was cheaper = should be the obvious answer :D
Nice "Turbo" decals, please alarm the whole Porsche community that your warranty is long gone. BTW I love your car. Looks and sounds like a beast, a good way to spend 10 grand.
If this was really the poor man's Porsche, my dad would've bought one. Instead, he settled for the real poor man's Porsche, the 914. Past-tense unfortunately, because he had to sell it. Parts are just plain expensive here, and he needed some room in the garage for six more vintage dirt bikes. :-P
There's absolutely no doubt that Porsche is holding back on the Cayman's. They know that if they actually tried the Cayman can be much better than the 911.
I went to school with Mike 1st grade thru 12. Hes the same gear head he was in HS. He used to take me out in his Chevelle when it was raining and practice spinouts. Great guy,
The Cayman is by no means the poor man's 911. The Cayman and the 911 cost the SAME for Porsche to build. The 911 simply has a higher *perceived value* because it is the Porsche flagship. In order to make the Caymans slower than the 911s, Porsche gave the Caymans a softer suspension and a little less power. However, these cars possess a far superior chassis and a wheelbase that is about 3" longer than the 911, which makes it perfect for road racing.
I own a Cayman S, whilst taking part in an Autocross event in Bahrain I was put up against GT2's & GT3's piloted by rally drivers & was almost 1.5 seconds quicker than both in street fight conditions with a terrible set of front rubber on mine causing loads of under steer, race spec GT3rs was the only thing with the power & handling along with slick tires to beat me (owned by Sheik Salman C.E.O of Bahrain International Circuit) it cost the dude $200,000 more than my car.
@Tarturus8803 I wouldn't say better. The RS is completely track ready from the suspension up. Can you make a Cayman as good or better and still spend a lot less, Yes, but damn those RS are too damn sexy.
it's not the poor mans 911 it's cayman it's lower than 911 has lower center of gravity I drove one and when I am near a 911 i see myself lower n hight, it's roadster which has two seats , 911 has four seats
@s2kjosh They don't cost the same at all. Porsche needs to make a profit off of each model, and if you are correct, that means that it costs Porsche 40k to build a base 911, and a base Cayman. Sorry sir, but it doesn't. The 911 costs much more to make than the Cayman does. Either way, the Cayman is still not a poor man's Porsche. Take any new Cayman, turbocharge it for 10k, and it'll beat any 911 you throw at it.
@Jamzkangster sir....you must do your research. A 987 chassis has a drag coefficient of 0.29 where the 997 has a drag coefficient of 0.31
Also I mentioned that Porsche sent these car out of the factory with a softer suspension to help slow it down a little. However, with a proper set of sway bars alone I have customers that routinely pass 997s on track all the time. They don't even need the extra motor a lot of the time. For the times that it needs it, the turbo option provides more then enough
@s2kjosh they didnt include a limited slip diff, which made it slower in a circuit than the 911. thats all the difference there is :) however in 2009 the cayman s has the diff as an option
Great cayman! You know what would really make me swoon...if you guys put a gt3 front fascia on it. In my opinion, the cayman front still looks too cute. the gt3 front i think is best, the 997 NOT THE 997.2 that has 3 not 5 openings. it's better looking than the turbos too! it may not have LED but it's purpose built. sorry i got sidetracked being the first to comment and all. i've seen ur vids about half a dozen times and tip my hat to your accomplishments with a cayman.

not really since the gt3 is wider and more suited to a track than a cayman but the cayman is a lot better on normal roads less punishing to drive

@s2kjosh I don't think so man.
The 911 chassis is much more aerodynamic, and has much better suspension, and of course more powerful engine.
The cayman can't hold a candle to it's big brothers, GT2, GT3, and Turbo.
Although I agree with you, the cayman has incredible potential to top the 911 Carreras with it's mind engine mount
