  • Sadly this is an event they tend to leave out of the history books. I think most people do not even know this event was REAL and really did happen! (Google The Christmas Truce of 1914)

  • @Lintflas Such mal nach Joyeux Noel ein Film über den Weihnachtsfrieden. Guck ich mir jedes Jahr an an!

  • German POW Camps have been compared favorably with others, say Japanese POW Camps.

  • oh my god... there's so many graves at 3:33, I wanna cry now. DX

  • we used ur video for our Xmas play. thanks for making it ;)

  • @woo3276 Thank you for using it :)

  • A beautiful song and a poigniant video. I have always liked it. My grandfather was in the first world war and told me that the only evil there was those behind the lines spreading propaganda.

  • This is my favourite christmas song, beautiful and very moving.

I remember those tears in my eyes when I first heard this song and story about this beautiful event. I really wonder why they still didn't make a great movie of this stuff. It is worth to be told.

Frohe Weihnachten and all the best from Germany to Britain.

  • @alanstarkie2001

It really suprised me when i found out what happened, made me look at the war differently actually! The songs really good aswell:)

  • I watched this at school today... Really suprised me, very emotional actually:(

  • @phoebee108 I felt like that the day I put it together :)

  • hehe even back then Germany still beat England at football xD

  • Pickelhaubes <3

  • The Christmas Truce really makes me think that there is hope for humanity. :)

  • beautiful song....

  • the lions laided down with the lambs

  • my favourite quote of all: They were Lions led by Donkeys.

  • I think that the fact that they had a Christmas truce helps you to see it from both perspectives of the soldiers because at the end of the day they were all in the same position, i watched the documentary in school today, found it hard not to cry ): <3

  • Am speechles for once, the only people that prospered from

    ANY war was politicians! Peace.

  • @yorkie6687 and bankers and corporations that make profits from it all

  • This song never fails to move me....pity it couldn`t rid us all of our weaknesses,,,,there will always be envy and hate, it`s in our nature...but every now and then the human spirit comes thru !

  • I just feel so so sorry for those poor men who had to kill their friends... all because of the politicians who forbade it from happening again! how messed up is that!?

  • @Whoami691

The people who made the truce were sent back from the front line as they refused to fight.

  • i see this as an inspiration, even during times of war peace can be found, we are human, set by ideals, its our belief in Christmas that united us, if only for a brief moment. We are all humans fighting humans... why cant we all just get along?

  • Before you meet someone:

Fat, lazy, evil, barbaric, murdering rapist.

    Afterwards:

He's just like your friends back home. A normal guy.

And then you wonder why you're fighting. And so does he.

And then it keeps going -.-

  • See, soldiers don't want to be there. Especially after the original "go get 'em" attitude is gone. Even more when no progress is being made either way.

War is bullshit. But it's been part of... humanity since it began. We're finally starting to learn to cooperate internationally, but there's still a lot of people who hate each other for no important reasons. Or because they've been taught that there's important reasons when there's not... and so we still have major wars...

  • Damn shame they couldn't pull this off again.

  • GOD BLESS THEM

  • They should have end the war that night.

  • God bless all the countries in that terrible war the xmas truce was a sad thing that it did'nt last

  • If this interests anyone, please see my poem about the Christmas Truce accompanied with a video on my channel :)

  • i pray to see within my lifetime, a world without borders and countries that are not run by the corrupt

  • Comment removed

  • come on england its really frances fault lets go back to hating them lol

  • War sucks

It fucks you up in the head

No one at the intention to kill, but you have to do so.

One day people have a truce, and everybody enjoys their time together, then back to the war, you'll have to kill these people you had fun with

    Sad

  • @nzigen31 thats called the "insanity Of War" one moment your killing eachother, next your having a truce with the enemy to celebrate something like christmas, Few days later, your killing your new friend you made.

  • If you nwant peace..........Slit the throat of a tory war loving politician or their kid, tyhen they'll listen

  • shows that both sides were human, and sick of the killing

  • No more wars, give peace a chance!

  • How can one moment highlight the beauty AND the madness of men?

  • Hiya,

Is it just me or do we seem to have spent far too long fighting each other for one reason or another.

I do hope that one day we finally learn how to live together.

    Regards Phill. UK.

  • Thanks for posting this. Im 26 and I love Mike Hardings stuff.

  • Forget your country , forget your nation , we are all part of one kingdom the kingdom of God. And think my dear friends would he want 10 million of his children to die fighting each other? Would he forget the sacrifice of 60 million beloved? No and that is why we forgive and forget. We love one another as we love ourselves.

  • Blood of every soldier and civilian in the history was the payment for us to understand that killing each other is very stupid thing. And world war 1 was one of the most stupid, cruelest and pointless war ever.

I know that one must defend against enemy if there is a good reason, but where the hell could we be now, if there was a cooperation instead of every single war during the last just 200 years.

I would be probably sendind this message from my favourite holyday hotel on mars.

  • Fantastic what kinds of insightful comments I read here, the most people here in Holland should take this as an example. Hate against germans is still living here entered by one-sided history lessons and 'believe it or not' anti german report in the media. 4 generations after last war, young people still learning here "we are good, germans are bad. It's a shame!

  • @jaquesTNT If it's any consolation, here in the UK we very much like the Dutch and the German people. Merry Christmas.

  • @alanstarkie2001 we should like them, we are all the same people.

  • @jaquesTNT

Yes it a shame for holland!

i am German and I tell you why!

The polish people had to suffer so much more from Germans and they where able to forgive.

Holland was not so much involved.

BUT despite that, holland was the land, where the utmost jews where betrayed and delivered to the Nazis against money.

I think this is an inner shame for a lot of people from Holland.

  • @Oshun58

    100% agree.

von deren mithilfe wird im geschichtsunterricht 'kein einziges wort' faul gemacht.

  • @Oshun58 :

thanks jaques...I Would like to top this.

People who where really in the resistance in holland, like Maya Storms, did forgive.

It is always harder for those who did collaborate to forgive then those who did really fight.

  • @jaquesTNT to an extent, i do not blame them one bit

  • @jaquesTNT In the U.S.A. the Germans are still the villains in our films. We still fear Russians, but now we have Muslims to fear and hate, and depending on your political point of view, there are many others to hate. We are such a divided nation.

  • @Flagman00 Very honest comments. We are divided nations, we are divided people, we are living in a divided World. The Romans knew it all too well; divide and conquer, and it's still working.

"...there are many stories of football matches between the opposing forces....both British and German soldiers related that the score was 3-2 in favour of the Germans."

= Some things never change. I bet the third goal was a penalty.

  • @jaquesTNT

very nice comment, thank you, mate!!only just seen.

  • @jaquesTNT i think its the same in germans they tell there kids that we are the bad ones snice we were the frist that bombed german citys the germans only bombed our ships ect but not citys

  • @ownagebattle I'm from germany ( living in the netherlands several years) and I never ever hear about your suggestion. what we learn in school and hear in the media is always the same since I can remember: "'We are to blame and shame to us."

  • @jaquesTNT Yup,come to Denmark,we simply LOOOOOVE any old German :)

  • @jaquesTNT, that's interesting, in France we never think of the Dutch as nationalist people! Besides, in the 1960s the French made great efforts to transform the French-German relationship from bitter resentment to friendship: school children & student exchange, pairing cities, etc. And it succeded, partly because we had a president named De Gaulle, who knew Germany well.

That doesn't mean that we forget history – but it has become history.

  • The German people are one of the best in europe. They have nothing to be ashamed of . The past is where it belongs in the past.

  • Merry Christmas, you Brits over there.... :-) Peace and a warm home for all of us!

  • Comment removed

  • germany = great country!! just like britain... this is one of the greatest moments of 20th century history!!

    merry christmas from england

  • Lampards great great grandfathers goal was still disallowed back then! haha.....we all love you germany! well done in the world cup....england played shit....i bet back then you still beat us at football! hahaha

  • I have faith in the human spirit, and it shows despite how bad the war was Germans & Brits showed great compassion. I know a few German people and they are ashamed of their past, but they shouldn't. Both World Wars belong in the past, lest we forget but please dont be ashamed. German soliders were just Adolf Hitler's puppets. Still, i cant believe we were losing to Germany at the football back then as well! hahahaha.

  • this armies knows peace than their warmonger leaders..

  • the fighting really should have just ended that day

  • @ debzeppeliniv -

Check your facts...WWI was about way more than one assassination. Between 1181 -1914 there were 16 world leaders assassinated. Not to mention a fued in the Balkans, a German blank cheque and a slew of other issues.

  • Absolutely stunning.......Thankyou for this post!......I will however be forever wondering what kind of empty lives the 4 people who disliked this must lead!......God help us!

  • what is sad about this though, some were actually charged with treason, I asw an entire doc. about it, don't know which side, or if it was both. that is what was reported though, as usual the top brass were to blame. they should have been hung. so very long ago, they were just boys, that longed for home and family. just think, all those dead, and for what one dead Prince. just curious, but do any Royals still govern, in Europe today? So sad...

  • Frohe Weinachten. May there one day be peace

  • It saddens me that something like this will probably never happen again, and if it did, the soldiers who took part would probably be crucified by teh media.

  • truth is not many of the nazi reely were bad people. they were like you and me. people who didnt want to fight but they had to. iv herd of storys where a nazi and ali were best freinds for most of the war and snook off out of sight to enjoy others company. and othere stories of holiday greeting from both sides no fighting for upwards of a week. where they difused the mines in nomans land and played with eachother. godd times for all. war is hell but hell can have its fun times

  • This song makes me cry because we coulda had world peace right then and there if only the generals knew how the soldiers felt. :(

  • First time I've heard this, and I love it. WW1 is apassion of mine since a lot of my family was involved. Thanks for your effort.

  • The germns took the blame for ww1 even though some Serbian guy assasinated Franz Ferdinand and that really started the war then came Germany and they had to pay allot of money for all that ''they'' had damaged, the emperror fell and Hitler created the third riche therefor cousing ww2 if germany had not needed to pay the ww1 whould have been the only ww and this is the bigest mistake the world has ever done to itself

  • Germany beaten Britain 3-2 in the soccer game in the no mans land match. OWNED! j/k

  • its only a matter of time before we all realize that there are no borders between us on this world

  • thing is its all different now, germany is one of the nicest places in the world!

  • it's a shame that we couldn't engineer something like this today.

  • May the sons of Europe never slaughter eachother again!

  • who says football aint the greatest sport in the world... it can stop wars... for 90 minutes atleast..

  • i need to take a dump!

  • Very moving.

We're cousins who share the same cultural roots, and we were divided by stupid and irresponsible german leaders, but history is more than WW1 and WW2.

Remember General Wellington and Feldmarschall Blücher who fought against Napoleon side by side.

Hopefully one day you British forgive us Germans for all that darkness my ancestors spread across europe.

    best regards to Britain!

  • @Lintflas I never met a fellow Brit countryman who ever had anything bad to say about Germany. Fortunately, how we see contemporary German people is not at all defined by what happened during the war (though we love old war films!). There will be odd exceptions on both sides but I for one admire Germany and her people.

  • @alanstarkie2001 same here. I've been to Germany many times and I love it.

@Lintflas you are right. The English and Germans are the same race, the same people. It's the leaders who have ruined our alliances. I would much rather have German as an Allie than the USA.

    Merry Xmas

  • @Lintflas always felt cloest to germans over any other country

    Herzliche Grüße nach Deutschland

    (hope thats right)

  • @20cFilmWannabe

Thanks, and actually it's the same to many Germans. Unfortunately history has torn our great nations apart, but I hope that our relations will flourish again some day, because there's no future for Europe (hopefully without this EU mess) if we don't act in concert.

  • @Lintflas

Germany was never a bad nation. There is no such thing as a bad nation. Nor was there ever such a thing.

Just bad leaders who seduce a population.

I don't need any more proof other than the Order of the White Rose.

  • @Lintflas .....I once stayed with a German family in Krefeld who looked after me for a week whilst i played on a football tour....They were nothing but courteous and kind and were fascinated by me and me them!...The strange thing is I couldnt speak a word of German and only the father could speak only a few words of English....but we could both speak decent French!..So thats how we communicated!...What happened back then is in the past!....I only wish we could beat you at football for a change!

  • @Lintflas

    I forgive Germany.

The war was stupid. We are all like cousins or brothers.

    Merry Christmas!

  • @Lintflas i for one feel you have nothing to be forgiven for it was not your fault what your ancestors did

  • @Lintflas

But what you say makes no sense German brother, because the Netherlands were under French crown influence for more than 5 centuries and before that it was part of the holy roman empire. Saying the WW were fratricide only makes sense if you include all those Europeans who took part in the trifle.

  • @Igosuki

You're right, and of course the same is true of our French friends, when it comes to all those stupid wars we fought. As for me, I think we need a strong French-British-German round-table to make sure that we act in concert for the benefit of all, because the world order changes dramatically these days, and we need to prepare for the future.

All the best from Germany to France.

  • @Lintflas Deutschland ist an dem Krieg nicht mehr Schuld als England.

  • @Lintflas Don't worry Hitler wasn't that bad.

If he won we would be apologising to you... in GERMAN!!!!

    LOL PEACE MAN

  • @Lintflas

Don't get me wrong, I love you Brits, especially the Englishmen, but in the end there is much more to what happened.

History books aren't actually written by the victors, actually they are written by those who live in a about 200 years. They will judge the historic facts and I'm not sure if my British cousins will like it, because it will be different from what they teach us right now.

  • @Lintflas There is nothing to forgive, its people like you that bring a tear to my eye, the Germans are wonderful people, friendly and always up for a laugh, It is dictators and people like Hitler who force people into it, as this truce proved, nobody wanted the war, nobody wanted to fight, they were forced to fight for their country, and its people like you that continue to ensure Germany has a wonderful future to show the world :)

  • @Lintflas Lets be honest the history of WW1 and WW2 was everyone's fault from secret wars between Russia and Britain to the French and Prussian war no one was innocent in that war except the soldiers who fought and bled in it.

  • I have heard - by way of anecdote only I`m afraid - that the British ( and possibly German ) Government afterwards prescribed that this must never be allowed to happen again - that waring soldiers make an ad hoc truce on Christmas Day, or any other day. If true, I can understand the reasons behind it. Could anyone enlighten me as to if this is true - ie the position of the Governments ?

  • @valarmanwe The comanders of the Ypres section fo the line (the place were the truce happened) on both sides sought to quickly replace the men involved with fresh troops and further more made sure the artillery bombarded 24/7 over each subsiquent christmas period during the war to prevent there soldiers humanising the enemy.

  • What an awful war. Not only did millions of people lose their lives, it shattered the human spirit. - Which was well and truely alive in 1914... But i guess the leaders didn't like that.

  • when it comes to war, dont hate the soldiers, hate the leaders.

  • Those soldiers gave a lesson of civilization and humanity ... while taking part in a cruel and inhuman war.. God bless their souls, their actions will be forever be remembered as one of the greatest moments of modern human history.

  • Wish I could get a clear shot at the sods who said "No brotherhood! Just kill each other!" and forbade the soldiers from bonding with each other.

  • When the British Army Leaders heard of this incident, they were horrified and made sure that it was not repeated the following year. The origins of WW1 are something which the modern European finds impossible to believe.

  • now is it just me or should have the rest of the war been like this men hanging and telling there leaders they were fighting. that would have been good.

  • FUCK the people that were against this.

  • did this happen throughout every single battlefield in ww1 in 1914?

  • @m1grand70 yes its was kill or be killed. you wet faggot.

  • we didn't call the nazi's terroists, we called them, what they were.anybody can be a terroist, but it's the group behind the plot.

  • Comment removed

  • A Silent Night {Christmas 1915} - Jerry Lynch

  • there should be more ww1 first person shooters!

  • COD: WWI would be great

  • this event shows how common men have good in their hearts. the war was waged by politicians and greed, and the young men who just wanted adventure paid the price for their leaders mistakes, power corrupts and its sad to think that that will always end in the death of those who dont even know why they are fighting, no individual soldier deserved to die, all wars are by politicians who are to afraid to fight for their "just" cause themselves

  • They had their own reasons, but still acknowledged the one great King's birth-JESUS. You'll never see the Muslims do that though. We are fighting them in Afghanistan,& Iraq, and they, and their beliefs are slowly taking over America. We have to respect them and their religion, in our own Country. And Obama passed a law that PBS(public broadcasting service) can't show/promote anything Christianity no more as of 2009. But it's okay to promote Islamic religion.Sad. Real sad !

  • @glencoe6305 Yeah, that is ridiculous, and a lot of them don't even care what we do.

  • Because Liberalism and Multiculturalism are treated like they were a religion nowadays.

Great video by the way, I faved it. 5/5.

  • Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. You sound just as bad as the "extremists" you complain about. Nobody cares about americas war for oil in Iraq or there revenge campaign in Afghanistan. We here to talk about an equally stupid fucking war that wiped out an entire generation of young european men and caused the deaths of nearly 60 million people 20 years later.

  • Hey,dumb ass i wasn't talking about the reason for that war, or the war going on now. I was talking about 2 groups of enemies, breaking for peace to honor Christmas.

  • @glencoe6305

    god...listen to yourself.

we are watching a video about men who DIED fighting a war they didn't believe in. they fought along side many different cultures..these people lost their lives for peace and jesus is not a king, he was just a man. And no, we are not fighting muslims...we are fighting extremists, just like the nazis were extremists. Its all about politics

  • @glencoe6305, READ THE CONSTITUTION

  • This is such a beautiful and moving event, and it is my favorite christmas story. My grandfather was captured by the germans during ww2, and ended up in a consentration camp. At that time the ferry his mother was on went on a mine, and she lost her leg. A german soldier saved her from dying of blood loss, and kept her from dying. My grandfather was not able to hate germans after that. And I really see how beutiful that is.

  • Such a story! Yes, when it comes down to it - individuals are OK. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the song. Merry Christmas

  • Click on 'more info' in the sidebar. There is a link to Mike Harding's website and a link to Amazon where you can get the music.

  • thank you alan, merry christmas....

  • Thanks. Merry Christmas to you too.

  • @ravingjunkey Not true it started with the warwickshires

  • that was very beautiful

  • Christmas eve

    1914-2009

  • Wonderful, Mike Harding has achieved the right tempo for such an emotional and crazy part of mans history.

  • Good Xmas and a wonderful new year from me too.

  • This is FANTASTIC!.........Happy xmas everyone!

  • The men both German and Britan lost the will to fight the people that they just played soccer with, ate with, sang with, shared adresses, showed pictures of families....... both sides layed there guns down onto the edge of their trenches and no man's land ... every gun was facing left (in theory because the US eagle faces left to the oak trees for peace instead of arrows for war) and the new men took the places, grabbed the guns and fired..... you know the rest

  • Very nice a real great song.

  • best christmas song because of the message communicated.

  • lets not type any negative massages onto this video. the onofficial truce of Cristmas 1914 will not be forgoten

  • Well said that man! You get the odd one and he was 63 years old which surprised me. You think he'd know better... Thanks.

  • I dont like the type of music but the song itself is just,...... amazing. and the 63 year old didnt know anybetter but this 13 year old (me) LOVES HONNORABLE HAPPENINGS

  • I suppose the song is old fashioned English folk music style - not for everyone. As for the 60 year old - maybe he had a bad day! Good for you.

  • I think perhaps you should shut up.

  • WOOHOO! I GOT TO GIVE THE 6TH THUMB DOWN!! YIIIIPEE!

    Fuck You yiblon.

  • @yiblon It's spelled 'puerile', you disrespectful little twat.

  • They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

    We will remember them.

    God bless

  • my great grandpa gave me a book on this he said the score was 5 -3 for the british hahaha

  • A truly remarkable story. I found it quite ironic how war can be so horrible and depressing but can also create such beautiful stories like this. God bless them all, you will never be forgotten

  • God rest their souls.... † † †

  • About 10 miles north east of Ypress there is a simple wooden cross in what was a turnip field that marks the spot where soldiers from both sides. God willing my friends & I plan to go there and place a football & flowers on Christmass 2014.

  • That is an excellent idea

  • Well I'm sure we won't be on our own. - Ypress is a beaqutiful place especialy in the snow & frost. Kids ice skate in the old square & bugals play every night the somber last post at 8 pm.

  • seems quite a few think it is something we should do judging from my messages - it was my mate Dans idea - The cross marks the spot where the game of football was played. Ypress (lepe in belgium) is a stunning place - google Ypress, Last Post Association - Tyne Cote & Hill 66 for details recomended hotel : Ambrossia - clean - nice breaky and resonable - please feel free to message me

  • Bless you for the info, I am very concerned with how future generations treat the memory of that war. We must never forget.

  • @trevortrevortsr2 Do it, both sides deserve the honor and respect for their bravery.

  • We will remember Them!!!!!

  • if only we could have the same sence now lol god rest their souls

  • Moving

  • I think the Christmass truce of 1914 was a victory for common sence & a becon of hope to everyone - If they could then why cant we?

  • Very moving. Shows that, sometimes, the average soldier on both sides have a lot in common, and are only fighting because their superiors tell them to.

If the soldiers were left out of the equation, and only the higher eshelons were left to fight it out, I bet they could find a compromise without a drop of blood being spilled.

  • Thank You.

  • Rememberance Day 2009 Lest we forget

  • Lest we forget ...."A Baynot thats a weapon with a working man at either end...." .....all this for Imperial Gain.....

  • Wasn't WWI, The War to End All Wars.

Then we had WWII, Korea, Nam, Persian

Gulf I, Afghanistan, and Iraq, do we have

    a pattern going here.

  • I think war is part of the makeup of the human species. I doubt we'll ever get away from it.

  • War in general, is a sad thing. It is here today gone tomorrow. When will we ever

learn, we kill the best of us to kill the worst

of us. I am not a peace nik, but I am getting increasing tired of the waste of life.
