No one ever can reach this level of singing of Stevie here in this clip. Don't forget that he is blind, cannot see any writing, but he sings so soulful and par excellent by filling in the gaps which are left bei Bobby. So they gave us here a nice version of their talents...
@damngrooveman yeah, stevie was bursting with musical expression like no other..it shone out of him like light. When he comes in on the second verse its one of the best musical moments I have ever heard. Darin is of course fantastic as well, a true musician's musician and a gentleman.
And to think Stevie Wonder sang duets with beyonce Faith Hill, and Shania Twain, huh? The three of them combined don't have a fraction of Bobby Darin's talent!
One of the neatest things about this video is that in spite of the fact that both singers miss a few cues, flub a few lyrics, have mic/vocal balance problems, sometimes become inaudible, and occasionally clap off-beat ...
... their performance is perfect. Absolutely perfect.
I wouldn't want them to change a thing! They're both so relaxed -- such naturals. And it's evident how much they respect each other; how much they love the song they're singing. That's where the mojo comes from.
Bobby Darins talent is trmendous. Even if todays so called "stars" could magically become 100times better they would still be 100times worse then Mr. Darin.
Wow this totally blew me away - amazing combination and great rockin' version of the song. Sometimes Magic happens in unforseen places and this was it.
Good question... a copy of this show is in the Museum of Radio and Television, but it's not a master... it was recorded and donated by someone who worked on the show. My understanding, just like many of the 60s era Tonight Show episodes, this series was mostly erased so they could reuse the expensive video tapes.
@WookieCookie yeah.. they probably erased it, I mean it's just Stevie Wonder and Bobby Darin singing a Tim Hardin's song. who would wanna watch that? And tapes are expensive.
It must have been a special moment for both of them. May not have been rehearsed seems like spur of the moment duet. Either way, a precious video. Thank you.
@malscott Tim Hardin wrote the song and his publishers sold it to Bobby Darin in 1966 just before Hardin's version was released. Darin got the hit off it but despite some people trying to turn it into a rift, Hardin was grateful for both the money and the exposure from it. In 1969, Hardin got the hit off of Darin's Simple Song of Freedom. This particular show was in 1969.
@liverpoolishgirl wow that seems like ages ago i left my comment i dont remember what i said in it. but thanks for the info. i have learned since tm also performed the song at the woodstock music and arts festival i saw that vesrsion somewhere but i didnt think it was as vibrant as this version. but one particular version that johnny cash and june did together thats here on youtube i think is still my favorite. i dont recall hearing bobby darin doing it. i'll look that one up.
maybe Stevie's voice was so strong, 'they' needed to keep the mic closer to Bobby? I don't know. really beautiful rendention. brought tears to my eyes . WOW
What's with Bobby's do? And is there a better argument for why moustaches, in general, should be avoided? I mean, BD was always a pretty cool looking guy, but he looks silly with that combination of slicked back hair, 'stache, and sideburns. Did he have some kind of hair transplant later on? Notice the 1973 live, solo version of this song: his hair volume appears to have doubled from what it was in this earlier performance.
my take is that this video was done in 1969...at that time/point most men, not all, wore the stash/had long burns but their hair weren't slicked back sort to speak. I myself for example had the burnes, stach but my hair was not greased or slicked back, was worn long just like his 73 video and even longer. No, I believe he did not have a transplant. His hair was not greased or at least not greased as it might have been in 1969.........
When you see Stevie singing like this, you're seeing someone in another universe, totally lost in a world of sound, like floating free in musical space. I know that sounds pretentious - don't know how to express it. Total respect.
I hope & pray that future generations **ALWAYS** are able to see such great singers of the past : ) Both of these men (were and are) so special & unique in there own right....what a brilliant performance...love them both so, dh
THESE PERFORMANCES WERE SOOO WONDERFUL AND 60'S AND 70'S TELEVISION WAS LOADED WITH EVERY FAMOUS SINGER AND THEY DID IT ALL, MAYBE WITH SHOWS LIKE AMER IDOL AND SUCH THE REAL STARS WILL START DOING TV AGAIN.. THE ENEMY IS COPYRIGHT LAWS! the music and film industry is drowning in laws
well you are right, absolutely. Sorry for misunderstandings. I paid attention in my comment only on Stevie, because he is my favorite singer. BD is also great, that's why I like his "carpenter" Live 1973,too.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! LIVE, (at that moment), brings great, fun, memmories that are never forgotten---just doesn`t get any better then this......smiles, dh
Well, this is a real treasure!I'm a big fan of Stevie since 1966 (then I was 13) and in 1968 was released "Shoo be doo da day". In this video you can see Stevie's whole power and ability output - from when he hum along in the beginning until the end, when he is shaking...absolutely great.Soul music at it's best and Bobby had problems to follow Stevie's groove and acappella...
I don`t know?--what I see, is them both loving the moment and feeding of each others groove !!!! Bobby Darin was a man who loved all diversities of music and always showed it with sooo much "passion"--as did Steveie!!! God, their voices were so great together***I love them both***its true heaven hearing and seeing them sing together & I think the world agrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dh
What show is this from? I would guess, just from looking at Stevie, it is from the late 60's - early 70's. Is it possible this is from Flip Wilson's show? Looks like some of the background props I've seen on his show. This was a true gem though. These two giants sounded great together. Stevie looks like he's about 20 years old! Just great!
I just got done reading all 102 comments of this unbelievable video!!! Both these men had and have "True rhythem & Soul" and should go down in history as Legendary singers!!!! I love them both.........dh
