About the solo ... really basic rolls and rhytms your wrist ist not used propely with fingers and arm and so on so on truly only another amature can apretiate this so if you see negative comment you know that is a good drummer and not deaf YT user.
@cvcgac I was still iffy on Pridgen, I think. He had a great open sound, which I didn't hear anywhere else in the DVD, you know? But still, I think his toms and kick sounded like dead thuds to me half the time.. I had little complaints about Simon and actually Gavin's sound. I just hope it won't be this bad in the future!
@Anonymous122131 nope..it's called a gong bass drum, and tama holds the patent for it..not a floating bass drum, nor a concert tom..Neil Peart was one of the first drummers to have one in his set up, since he endorsed tama at the time..other unique drums tama holds the patent to are octobans, which DW. now call rata drums..

@30coupe1 true but they didn't have 4 triple platinum records in a row which STYX has. Both are historical bands but I am just stating the track record of STYX.
Todd can hang with vinnie, and Gadd easily. He has been playing drums 30 plus years now. If you watch the hand movements you will realize how incredibly difficult they are. Todd has an almost unmatched groove and his technique is near flawless. There is a reason he is in Styx who is the only band in history to record 4 triple platinum records in a row.
Is anyone else jacked with what seems to be the resurgence of big drum kits for all types of music? Kits that truly allow the drummer to be a percussionist. I am not a fan of large kits that are just for show......but if range and pitch are used properly, then I can think of no greater moment to be in then when locked in a deep jam on a monster kit.
Man, I don't even know if I want to bother trying to wrap my head around those kind of time signatures! And yeah, all everyone is interested in is speed speed fast chops, stuff like that. They don't even care about the smoother, calmer part of drumming. And I know for a fact these people talking crap are nowhere near this guy in skill level. He has great technique and a good feel for the drums. Glad to find someone agrees with me!

I think history will proove that he belongs up there with all the others who have studied the past and advanced the instrument to an even greater level. His name belongs up there with all the rest.
no way dude .... there are people in every city in the world that can play as well as this guy ... and frankly , i did not hear him play anything that i have not heard before . And being an original and a pioneer is what makes people historical on their instruments . Dont get me wrong , i would like to be able to play as well as this guy , but historically talking he is not there .buddy rich , tony williams , john bonham , steve gadd , dave weckl , vinnie collauita ... er , and todd sucherman ?
Guess we'll have to disagree on this one. :-) Technically I think the guy can only be touched by a select few. His feet are not the best, by his own admission, but his hands are just scary. I have heard/read more than one interview with him where he talks about deconstructing what VInnie, Gadd, and others where doing on the drums and copying/ bettering it. Pioneer, maybe not, but he is a damn fine player and I dont think there are as many people as you think that can even get near his ability.
Thank you for making my point ... he deconstructed what Gadd and Vinnie do .... just like the rest of us .... Todd Sucherman is a very good drummer , but thats the end of it .
Regarding his hands ... they are pretty good . He has excellent technique but it is by no means mind blowing ... for truly amazing hands check out keith carlock , jo jo mayer , and any top drum corps line ... I think Santa Clara Vanguard are the best ... their chops will put your jaw on the floor .
true. but chops are different between drumset and marching percussion. Don't get me wrong, Marching technique is awesome and very hard to perfect but you don't carry that technique to the kit. It's more of a looser feel which allows you to draw more dynamics out of the drums.
@Drums1881 The technique is practically the same. Just because some drum corps out there look completely stiff doesn't mean they are. Technique is technique. And honestly, the rudimental side of marching plays a large role in having a diverse vocabulary on the drumset. Just for example, Stanton Moore, one of the loosest cats out there, took lessons from the guy who used to be the percussion caption head at Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. It's all applicable.
@PearlGroove i agree, i am totally stunned and impressed of how he uses his hands and this feeling became really rare in these times, where you can see so many good musicians on the internet, that are all technically experts in what theyre doing, but the musicians that give you a shiver are only those few bearing the spirit in them...
@PearlGroove Todd is one of my favorites for his musicality on the kit. As far as drummers who can get near his ability, there are quite a few who surpass it. They play different styles and are not "better" by any means but such drummers as Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Gavin Harrison have a bit more up their sleeves than Todd. Dont take that the wrong way. I completely agree with you, but from a technical standpoint those 3 guys come to mind. They are on my top five list for sure. Cheers!
@soundmind529 As far as technique (in my opinion :P ) Gavin is still no where near Todd, and I love Gavin's playing; he's got mad groove. But after watching Todd's DVD, and clips from his upcoming one, I still am as impressed as ever. Some things I've seen Todd do I don't think I'd ever see Gavin do, but again they ahve completely different styles. Now on the other hand, Virgil is a technique 'god', however I think he has literally no groove, and to me that's not a well rounded musician...
@Kelavmeister Well, sorry to disagree but Gavin has better feet and a better sense of feel in odd time signatures and makes them flow more evenly than anyone else. To say Virgil has no groove is incorrect, because his work with Planet X and Steve Vai is nothing BUT groove. The artists VD has worked with would not have chosen to play with him if he had no groove. Todd is great for Styx and is also a great clinician, but has some work to do before he comes close to Gavin Harrison. Cheers.
@soundmind529 Im more or less trying to show that there's more to Todd than what you see here and in Styx, and I don't care for Styx. To really see all he's got you gotta see his DVD, that's a true representation. Stylistically, I think Virgil's got no groove; comparatively to people like Stanton Moore, or even Gavin, I think he spends more time trying to impress than meld with the music. But again, merely taste. To say Todd has 'work' to do is an extremely ignorant statement, I'm sorry to say.
@Kelavmeister The "work" i was referring to has nothing to do with skill. I meant only in the sense of a comparison to Gavin Harrison. I have seen his dvd, and it is impressive. Gavins DVDs were better in my opinion. As far as Virgil, he has taken drumming to a very physical/mental realm that not many can reach. I do think he tries to show off, but he is a great clinician. He has worked very hard to get to that level. Thanks for this debate. Much respect to you, brother.
i'm sorry, but i just don't feel he belongs in the same festival with gavin harrison, tony royster jr, and the dave matthews drummer (forget his name). he simply doesn't compare.
didn't know who he was til my parents got back from the styx concert and told me to look him up. very impressive. im also a big fan of gavin harrison and danny carey.

And being an original and a pioneer is what makes people historical on their instruments . Dont get me wrong , i would like to be able to play as well as this guy , but historically talking he is not there .buddy rich , tony williams , john bonham , steve gadd , dave weckl , vinnie collauita ... er , and todd sucherman ?
sweetfly66 2 years ago

Drums1881 2 years ago

Torture1504 1 year ago
@PearlGroove Todd is one of my favorites for his musicality on the kit. As far as drummers who can get near his ability, there are quite a few who surpass it. They play different styles and are not "better" by any means but such drummers as Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Gavin Harrison have a bit more up their sleeves than Todd. Dont take that the wrong way. I completely agree with you, but from a technical standpoint those 3 guys come to mind. They are on my top five list for sure. Cheers!
soundmind529 1 year ago
@soundmind529 As far as technique (in my opinion :P ) Gavin is still no where near Todd, and I love Gavin's playing; he's got mad groove. But after watching Todd's DVD, and clips from his upcoming one, I still am as impressed as ever. Some things I've seen Todd do I don't think I'd ever see Gavin do, but again they ahve completely different styles. Now on the other hand, Virgil is a technique 'god', however I think he has literally no groove, and to me that's not a well rounded musician...
Kelavmeister 1 year ago
@Kelavmeister Well, sorry to disagree but Gavin has better feet and a better sense of feel in odd time signatures and makes them flow more evenly than anyone else. To say Virgil has no groove is incorrect, because his work with Planet X and Steve Vai is nothing BUT groove. The artists VD has worked with would not have chosen to play with him if he had no groove. Todd is great for Styx and is also a great clinician, but has some work to do before he comes close to Gavin Harrison. Cheers.
soundmind529 1 year ago
@soundmind529 Im more or less trying to show that there's more to Todd than what you see here and in Styx, and I don't care for Styx. To really see all he's got you gotta see his DVD, that's a true representation. Stylistically, I think Virgil's got no groove; comparatively to people like Stanton Moore, or even Gavin, I think he spends more time trying to impress than meld with the music. But again, merely taste. To say Todd has 'work' to do is an extremely ignorant statement, I'm sorry to say.
Kelavmeister 1 year ago
@Kelavmeister The "work" i was referring to has nothing to do with skill. I meant only in the sense of a comparison to Gavin Harrison. I have seen his dvd, and it is impressive. Gavins DVDs were better in my opinion. As far as Virgil, he has taken drumming to a very physical/mental realm that not many can reach. I do think he tries to show off, but he is a great clinician. He has worked very hard to get to that level. Thanks for this debate. Much respect to you, brother.

kickass. Again you lie about me not doing a single fill on the Hero track. Play it and post it or just keep pretending that you can play anything anybody wants to hear and certainly noy pay union scale to perform. You're a body building buffoon is all.
