  • Two years the end of October 2011 that we lost Mitch McLean on sticks - aka Dr Evil... The time feels like it has slowed the last two years for some reason - lots of changes since i guess...

Is 'Rox On' still going strong Hans..? The last time i saw u guys play was when i just finished chemo in Nov 07, it was a great experience and also a great memory for mom; Jean McLean... Thanx :D

  • Hey Hans, Good Stuff!Glad to know you're still a slave to the cause-me too!Hope to get in contact soon. Dan Middleton-railboy2

  • This is an awesome song! I'm not even into funk. But this is just sweet!

  • Pssssssh, that's nothing! You just need thicker calluses :P .... I played one of these for about two hours straight once, and had blisters for a month

  • cool, reminds me of oingo boingo meets the rhcp

  • Hans , when you coming to Australia !!!

  • Got one of those at guitar center lovethe thing

  • This is some real nice playing

  • Any instrument that calls itself a bass, is by very virtue of the role the instrument plays in the 'lower-archy', a funk-delivery-system.

  • Badass

  • Slappin' a 12 string, his thumb must now look like a foot! :)

  • @panhead1219 lol

  • Jeff Ament Style!!!

  • Hey Dude!!! Love what you do - Make that 12 string sing! Time now for some more tunes. Have had the pleasure of playing alongside all of you for a couple of years now. Ciao from...MC "The Hat"...

  • wow...thanks for destroying the myth of "you can't play funk with a 12 string bass". that's some amazing playing by you and your bandmates. i wish you well with your recovery...

  • shit!!!!!!!!

  • Hey,

I take it you like what you're seeing - cool! I'm going to be doing an update vid with better audio/video within the next two months, would have done so earlier but I fell and broke my wrist taking down our band backdrop last August . It's a bit of a process getting back!

    Keep on Rockin'

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Dude, you really do sound like you brought an extra guitar player along, what with that 12-string bass! I dig your Pink-Floyd-meets-George-Benson sound.

  • really cool! but are you popping at all during the main riff? oh and by the way we don't speak Spanish in Brazil we speak Portuguese

  • not bad

    props all round

  • Hey there,

Thanks, I'll do better in a month or so, I've recently broken my left wrist but have been planning a better-recorded version of the piece and some others!

    Keep on rockin'

    Very "Beast" Regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Hey man,

Thanks, this could be better and WILL be once I finish rehab on my wrist, the cast is off and I really do need to pick up my game. The new video has been pushed into next year, but I promise you the wait will be worth it. Yes I was the first to slap a 12-string bass on the net, but now this MUST improve! The more I see this video the more I want to show what I can do with a 12-string slap bass solo! Keep on Rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Man you rock! Your voice remeber David Gilmour singing "Young Lust". Cheers from Brazil!

  • Hey Man,

Muchas Gracias! That's cool, I really appreciate your comments. Being compared to David Gilmour in ANY way is a HUGE compliment. I'll be doing more very soon!

    Hasta la Vista Baby!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • another question, are there differences between the ch12 and the b12L?Thanks

  • Hey man,

Sorry, I thought I'd answered this a few weeks ago. Anyway from what I understand, the only difference is that the CH-12 is an import (China, Korea, Indonesia) and the B12L is made in the USA. HOWEVER, it's up to the personal taste of the player as to what bass he or she prefers.

    Keep on Rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • whoops! 70's that is.

  • Well, that's OK. Like I said, a groove is a groove!

    Very "beast" reagrds,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Hey Hans, NICE! A little &0's groove working there.

  • Hey man,

Thanks, a groove is a groove and this one was a bit different to play on the 12-Strinng Hamer for sure. Sure like doing it though, more to come! Keep on Rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Cool! You're amazing!!That hamer is the one made in usa?

  • Hey man,

Thanks, I really appreciate the comment! I'm working on another vid which should be much better and I'll get it finished by this summer. Yes it's the Hamer 12-string bass and they're very good, I actually have two of them - they ROCK!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • You guys are pretty animated on stage.

  • Hi there,

Thanks...but not really! We only had a narrow frame due to the camera being used so we had to pretty much stay where we were, as we had only two takes to get it right. I didn't want to blow it by inadvertently moving out of camera range. C'est la vie!!

I'm glad for your comments, keep on rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • that must hurt 2 pop those octave strings

  • Hey,

It's actually not all that bad as the strings are inverted, that is to say the octave strings are on top toward you and the bass strings are on the bottom away from you so you're popping the bass strings first & the octaves second. That being said, it has still taken some time to get the technique down - it's still a work in progress. No-one else is using this technique on the 12string bass as far as I know, so I'm on my own. Keep on rockin'!

    Very "beast" reagrds

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • when you slap the 12 string are you just hiting the bass strings or all 3? 12 strings have a really cool sound to them and I'm thinking about maybe making one.

  • Right on brother, great work. chris

  • Hey guys,

Thanks, your comments are greatly appreciated! I'm in the process of putting together a more up-to-date vid, should be done soon. I'm excited to be a 12-String Bassist, keep on rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Hey, super geil!

How is the adress from you're page?

    Is the name Roxon?

    Funky jeah Kirschi =)

  • Hey Kirschi,

Yeah the band is called ROXON, we're in the process of re-building and so I'm doing other 12-string bass projects at present. Not quite sure what you're asking about the "adress from you're page"(sic). Let me know and we'll be in touch. Keep on rockin'!!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Crank that bass up louder. I can barely hear it.

  • Hey thanks,

I couldn't play any louder since we were playing in a real wussy place that wouldn't let us play over about 100dB. Pathetic!

Anyway now we're playing in some serious venues, so the next vid will sound like rock, not lounge music. Bass should be loud!!! Rock Rules!!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • hey Thumb you have great sound! put some more videos, pls. lets ROCK

  • Hey man,

What an honour to hear from you in Europe! Hope you're still rockin' in Serbia Herzegovena. I am going to put together a new and better video within a month or so. Right now I'm focusing on practicing for a 12-string bass/classical piano recital for my mother's 90th birthday on April 5th. After that it's full steam ahead. I'm with you and will let you know when the new video is out - stay tuned! Rock Rules!!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • isnt that song the same as play that funky music white boy?

  • Hey man,

Yes I guess it sounds a bit like PTFMWB but it's not, it's a funky piece written by Delbert McClinton. Just so happened it served my purposes!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Hey,

Yes they do sound somewhat alike, but "Shaky Ground" is by Delbert McClinton whereas "Play that Funky Music" is by "Wild Cherry". Keep on Rockin'! Happy New Year!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • remember: a lot of songs are very simular:)

  • Yeah, you're right, with what....16 actual notes..?..there's going to be some similarities somewhere. Keep on rockin'!!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • You lie noone can do that. unless... your not human?

  • Hey Bro,

No lie man - the Funk is Skunk! I have been re-built because they have the technology and I'm "Funkin' for Canada" on my Hamer CH-12XT 12-string bass. I am Borg!

    Very "beast" regards,

Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen (#4 of 12)

  • i know man im just playing. its actually pretty cool, you should post a video of just you playing though.

  • Hey,

Thanks, I'll probably do something like that in future! 12 String Rocks!!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • i have always played 8 and 12 strings , and have slapped around on 'em also..but, i gravitated towards them because i approached the bass like i did all my guitar playing ( when i first started , younger days)..and since u almost HAVE to ( though as ur vid shows , rules do NOT exsist) play em w a pick , they suityed me fine...plus , i LOVED sheap trick as a kid..and love the early kings x stuff...

always nice to run into other 12 b owners

rock on friend ,. and god bless...

  • Hey Darrin,

The 12-string is an amazing instrument & I've always wanted to push the envelope with it. As you know, slapping is a great way to play it & with an 18" speaker cabinet it sounds even better. Keep on rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • forgive the typos...getting sleepy

    *cheap trick

    * suited

  • Hi again,

Some folks think that slapping the 12ver means playing it in a slap-type fashion with your fingers, not so! We both know that it's thumb slap/finger pop that makes it work & it's really cool! I hope you'll keep on using this style on your basses, I will!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • umm, what model / brand are u playing in this vid?

it appears like it may be a hamer chaparral

    CH-12...or a chaparral B12L ?

  • Hi again Darrin,

The bass I'm playing is a Hamer CH-12XT a great instrument. Sorry, I replied to all three of your comments but the system only took two of them, oh well!

    Keep on Rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • CH-12XT?...hmm...is that a CH-13?...a hamer chaparral?

  • and what model is that u have their friend?

    CH-12?

  • Do you give bass lessons?

  • Hey man,

I could learn some stuff from you too, that's one thing I've found, everyone has something to offer and it'd be great to trade licks. Give me a yell @ General Audio and we'll set something up.

    Very "beast' regards,

    Hans E.Sahlen

  • well put..nice to meet musicians with a good disposition...and thats not always the case

  • Hey,

It makes no sense to be a jerk, after all we're only musicians, not heart surgeons or teachers. I have no time for misplaced "look-down-the-nose" egotists. Nobody's THAT good!

    Keep on Rockin'

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • Good but move around or something...boring to watch. it need more energy.

  • Good morning,

First as I said before, the camera only gave us a small area to work in. Also the purpose of this video is to show something that hasn't been done before - a Funk Slap on a 12 String Bass, not to do an acrobatic metal solo. I did this to show other 12 string bassists that a Funk solo can be done on the bass & if you've ever played a 12 String Bass Funk Solo onstage believe me I was using LOTS of energy!!

    Very "beast" regards

    Hans "the Thumb" Sahlen

  • Hey i met the bass player at long and mcquade today, rippin dude, if this is by any chance his account this is that red haired kid you were talking to about musicianship. great band

  • Hey man good to talk to you again. You are a fine bassist and I know you'll do great things because you've got the desire and the right attitude! I'm glad you like the 12 string bass solo. It's a great instrument and I'm proud to be a player! Keep on Rockin'!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • very well done Hans just get that drummer to wear a better hat next time,All the best your friend Tim

  • Hey man, no problem. Thanks for your comments, glad you liked the 12 string funk solo. We're doing our best to turn our drummer into an AC/DC fashionista so he'll rock out more! Cool!

    Very "beast" regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • oh yeah, one more thing... Great singing!

  • To quote Robin Zander (another hero of mine) "Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!"

    Very best regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • You guys look like you wana Rock really hard, but you cant cause of the small club or something. anyway, Find some time to let lose!

  • Hey thanks for the comments! We only got a small area to work in, I wanted to get this done the first time.

Playing the bass this way means that I tape my right hand middle and ring fingers as I have to really hit the 12string bass to get all three strings to funk at the same time (and I've got the scars to prove it - ouch!) The club is small & the camera was close so no one would block it. I like bigger stages so we can rock out! Keep on rockin'!

    Very "Beast" Regards,

    Hans "The Thumb" Sahlen

  • WOW! Tom Peterson would be very proud, Great job cause I know that's very hard to do on a 12 string bass.

  • Thankyou very much! I hope Tom would be proud, he is a personal hero of mine and the reason I play the 12 string bass. Although there are some who believe that the 12 string bass is a "fad" instrument, I hope to be one of the bassists like Tom Petersson and Amy Humphrey (to name two) who help to show that this is a real instrument with unlimited potential and that it has the same credibility as any other instrument. I'm glad you enjoyed this video. Very best regards,

    Hans E.Sahlen

  • Awesume!!! I've never seen slap on a 12 String Bass. Great Talent!

  • Thanks, the 12 string bass is a very different instrument, and wasn't designed to be able to play funk-style. I've worked very hard to develop this technique on the bass, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
