Yeah, to tune or not to tune after a CAI... all around the forums consensus favors tuning. Perrin posts in their website that it is not needed and I called AEM, they also said that tune is not needed, no trying to engage people not doing it, but just want to know FACTS not just some UNFOUNDED URBAN CONCLUSIONS. In my case, my 2011 WRX is just 5 months old, I would not tune simply because it will void my warranty and the CAI will not. It just sounds sooooo nice!!!
Ive pulled logs on a 2011 sedan that was stock map running AEM intake. It had knock and was pulling -2.8 degrees of timing. The ecu saved the engine by pulling timing to get rid of knock... so yes, now it has learned and tuned itself out around the knock. This makes for a rough ride and up until the car actually learns the knock it is dangerous.
So its possible adding an intake adds power. But if you get knock and lose timing you will probably lose power instead.
You realize that a turbo negates the cold air intake right? the turbo compresses air that in turn heats it up, that is why you have an intercooler to cool the compressed air. The air temperature coming into your intake really doesn't matter cause it will still get compressed and heated to whatever the psi amount is. in the end you just wasted a few dollars when you could of just got a regular intake.
dude wake up-you can take the intake tube off the stock box & get a horsepower gain with no tune on almost any engine-adding a cone, short ram or other will give proven gains with no tuning & even more with, but the more air/fuel you add the more power you make-PERIOD
@xAbre1200 Hahaha are you being serious? I guess the millions of intakes out there that aren't tuned that haven't messed their engines up are just lucky.
equal length headers make me die a little inside, where's the rumble?

@thekannibalkid depends on the car, my car needs a tune even after just an intake due to the pain in the ass maf sensor

Did you tune your car after you put the intake on? You can seriously mess your engine up if you don't.

@xAbre1200 IDK who told you it hurts the engine but it doesn't hurt the engine at all. it just doesn't give you any HP gain unless you tune it.

@fbjr2003 some intakes can mess up the A/F ratio, thats why it needs a tune.
