Sorry did you just say that it is made of magnesium alloy??? dude this lens has a plastic mount right??? how is this made of magnesium alloy?? and it is very cheap... well... anyway... great lens.... for its price... that is... Cheers...
@newmattygosling you can actually take a picture of it... i have tried it myself... but you would have to crop it to make it look closer though... but still i got a great picture of the super full moon a few months ago...
I have this lens and think it is really good. I've taken some beautiful shots with it (even in low light with a tripod). I agree about the slow auto-focus but I tend to use manual focus a lot anyway. My other lenses are Tokina 11-16 f2.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and Canon 60mm macro f2.8 all of which are really great lenses and are pretty well priced.
@antiheroosk8a is there anything that the 18- 55 mm kit lens does that this can't or that this doesn't do as well as the 18-55 kit lens ..... Is there anything that I would loose if I don't have the kit lens
don't buy low aperure lenses. imean who cares if u can zoom in on the subject if u can't freeze wat they're doing and or see it. looking for a cheap lense buy the 50 mm f1.8 or make some money and buy a 100mm f2 macro. u'll be able to open up the aperture and up the shutter speed to reduce blur if everything is moving. plus they're both prime len's so they'll be sharper cause there's less glass in the way. zoom isn't everything i mean there is a reason we have feet.
would this lens make any difference in a wedding shooting section? I have the T2I with the EF-S18-55 IS. Ive used it already and it takes great pictures. Im just wondering the real difference between them. Is it only zooming?? thanks.. I appreciate your reviw
The real difference is the coverage area, with the 18-55 lens when fully zoomed out you'll cover more horizontal area than with the 55-250mm lens at 55mm, so for occasions like a wedding 18-55 is perfect as it covers more wide area even when you have no space to move back.
@mrboquer1 well as you get further into photography youll learn that different lens's are for different occasions and capturing different looking pictures. but essentially yes, the only difference is how far you can zoom in to the subject
i am thinking about getting this. im new to DSLR and photograqphy. i have a REBEL XT. how do you auto focus? i tried this same lens on my rebel XT and when i tried to auto focus by pressing the button it just shot the picture?
for a person buying a new camera, a good deal would be :

2) Lenses : a) A prime lens for close, sharp & artistic pictures : EF50mm f/1.8 II lens Cost : Around $ 80 -100 b) A telephoto lens for zoomed photography like nature & chicks !!! : Canon 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS lens Cost : Around $ 120 -

Just recieved this lens. The first thing I did is that I turned focus ring few times when it was in AF mode. The lens wasn't on camera. Question is: can it cause damage or some problems for lens? 'Cause I've heard that if focusing manually while lens is in AF mode isn't the best thing to do. But I don't know if it's bad for lens when it's not on camera.
thanks - this is the exact lense I am looking for, basic entry-level lense for good zoom quality and depth of field, the review and run-thru is very much appreciated.
Hi, this question is a little unrelated but I will be soon buying a Digital SLR. I'm thinking of buying the 550D since it fits right within my budget and will then be buying a lens like the one you have here. However, my question is; for video shooting which would be better: a Digital SLR like the 550D or a camcorder with a similar price tag? Thanks for your help and great review.
@MyConceptualisation - Hi, I have the EOS 500d and, although I don't use it for movies, the photo quality is great and I am really pleased with the purchase. It's a rugged, simple and fast camera. For movies, I understand that it can be a bit jerky and the sometimes has problems focussing. For pics, get this camera. @BOGGLEO Hey thanks a lot, appreicate that. Is there any particular camcorder you would recommened for the similar price range as a 550D? thanks again
this is a great lens for the beginner (me!) who just picked up their first dslr with the 18-55mm kit lens.
gives you a very nice range from 18-250mm at an amazing price. you really can't beat the price of this lens.
sure it's a bit slow at focusing, and it'd be nice if it were a bit brighter. but at the price, and the audience it's aimed at (novice photographers) this really is the perfect telephoto lens to add to your collection.
@twitchster77 hi buddy, i am a novice photograhper who likes taking SUBJECTS that are far away, in fact, i love to zoom my camera. And i am really wondering if i should choose canon EF S 55-250mm IS or canon EF 75-300mm USM? I dont and i never use tripod.
I have this lens and think it's a pretty good lens other than the auto focus can be kind of slow like you said. I find it to be about the same sharpness or slightly better than the 18-55 kit lens.
This and other efs's lenses 18-55is, 10-22, will work on a 1DMKII or full frame, leave me a message And I will send you the link to the PDF file which has all the mods.
@TheScreamingRetard (f4-f6) is the Aperature. The less Aperature u have, the better the lens is because it will provide u more light even in a dark room. Like suppose, u have f2.8 its still very good. Here is an example:
F2.8 and f22
•Smaller Aperture Number (2.8) = Wider Aperture = More Light
•Larger Aperture Number (22) = Narrower Aperture = Less Light
IS means Image Stabilizer. Even if u shake the camera while takin pics it wont become blurry unless its shaken so badly. Slight shake
@redlinecons Considering the price, its abt 200$ USD. And since it doesnt have IS (Image Stabilizer) its not a good lens for taking pictures at night or even in a dark room. Canon EF 75-300mm USM and Sigma 75-300 APO are okay lenses and prices are same. But of course, ppl prefer to have 55-250mm lens just because it has IS.
@delavegaz6 personally i would go with the lens i am reviewing. the image stabilization makes a hell of a difference and the 50mm more zoom you get with the 70-300 doesnt make too much difference in reality.
I have been using a Canon PowerShot S5-IS since 2007 so I'm used to having a lot of zoom. I'm about to buy an Xsi though and I'm trying to decide whether I should get a 55-250mm IS or a 75-300mm IS lens as a first zoom lens. Can someone help me out in deciding?
@alextothehbro go with the 75-300mm IS version. my encounters with that lens have been very good. it seems to be a little bit sharper then the 55-250 IS and also gives you 50mm more when fully zoomed in.
I love this lens...I use the Rebel T1i (500D) and the AF is frustrating at times, but I am satisfied so far...I can't wait to get my hands on a few Ks and get me an L lens, though.
I would have to say that this lenses is actually a good buy if you are really on a budget. It comes standard with the bundle pack of the Xsi kit. I own it and I like it! good review man. I feel the same way with the focus though....
The sharpness on this lens is above moderate at best I'd say. Compared to even the standard 18-55 IS kit lens from focal lengths 55-150~are barely sharper than pictures the kit lens have taken and its got quite severe vignetting when not stopped down to around f/8.
That being said, the lens is a couple feet away from me, I have it and used it for quite a while and enjoyed it, but having money to upgrade to some L's has totally blown my head out of the water when looking at other basic lenses
unfortunatly it does not come with a lens hood. i think canon only saves that for their L glass. and the pictures are sharp at all focal lengths in my experience
i wanna see the pics you have taken with it. i hate goin to websites and lookin at all the processed marketed pics. be good to see some real time everyday pics. shoot me ur link or somethin thanks and great video.
Please, i would like to buy a Canon 55-250mm IS objetive in Vancouver because im goin there in holidays and i think that in Canada objetives are chepaer than in Spain, Can anibody tell me how much does this objetive cost in EEUU or Canada?
I have a 450D now but I'm going to "upgrade" to a 500D. I'm not sure wether to go for a 18-55 /55-250 combi or an ef-s 18-200.. Do you happen to have that lens or have experience with it? Every bit of advice helps :P
i do have the lens. and it is extrmely useful. i would recommend to get the 2 bundle lens. the 18-200 is a goo lens but the lack of IS and 50mm makes a big difference.
hey antiheroosk8a i play and shoot paintball i was looking into a lense that would capture high speed thing like people diving into bunkers and such. i was going to get a 70-200 but it dosnt have IS and its 550.00 which is something i would need (IS) so is the 55-200 a good all around lense? hows the zoom?
hey, well, i have not shot paintball...well, not photographing anyway. but i DO think that it would be an awesome lens to use if you go paint balling during the day with no or little clouds. but if youve got the money, i would DEFINITELY recomend getting the 70-200. you are talking about the f/4 non-is version, and iv used this lens a few times, and its amazing. the bokeh is very nice and the AF is extremely fast. and as long as your shooting during the day, the 70-200would be a better choice.
i am also upgrading to a 70-200 f/2.8 in the near future. since i just upgraded to a 40D. i may or may not be selling this 55-250 IS. but either way, once i get it, ill do a review on that too. im thinking about doing a 40D review, but not sure. anyone want a detailed 40D review? if not or if so let me know. i know there are already some out, but just wondered if anyone wanted to see a new one.
the lens is not what determines what objects you can shoot, the shutter speed in a typical lens can go up to 1/4000 of a second. if its a canon. i have shot moving aircraft going about 300-400 at close range. so you should be able to shoot paintballers no matter what lens you have, its all in the camera.
im not sure about rebel cameras but i know in the 20D - 40D you can get all the way up to 1/8000 of a second. but if you want to use that shutter speed you have to be in extremely well light conditions. pretty much, outside, no clouds, sun beating down, and all that good stuff. or you could bump up the iso.. its all about the conditions you are shooting in and adjusting your settings accordingly. you may want to get aquainted with shutter priority (Tv Mode), P8ntballer45.
I'm probly going to get this lens in a couple weeks to go with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, I shoot a lot of sports and wildlife during the daytime so it seems like it'll be perfect for me.
hmm im beginner in all these camera things :D and i had olympus digitalcamera with tcon17 and now i have my first canon eos camera whii heh, and i like mostly take pics from distanse.. do ya have any sample pics of this tele tube? and sorry my bad english ...:)
i am in the process of making a slideshow of some sport pictures i have taken to show the comparison of shooting at night and during the day with this lens.
How slow is the AF? I'm looking to shoot sports and I need to get closer (but I don't have alot of money either). Would this lens do the job or do you think I should just wait?
this lens does an excellent job during the day with sports. the autofocus is excellent and the images sharp. at night you will need to go to probably the highest ISO you can and you will still be using a shutter speed of around 60. if you are using a D line camera then you can go up to 3200ISO and maybe a 100 shutter speed. but yea. i really suggest the 70-200 2.8IS if you are getting paid for these shots. if not. this lens will be excellent.
my personal opinion, would be to go with 55-250mm IS. you gain 20mm on the short end but lose 50mm on the long end. but the 30mm different is well compensated for with the IS. the IS is probably my favorite part of the lens.
the AF setting doesn't seem to be as bad as you said. it could be worth if you do end up doing a new vid to show more of this to put beeper on with the lens fully out of focus.
Thanks for the review bro, this is the only one i could find on youtube and I'm planning on this and the kit lense to be my first lenses for my rebel xs

@antiheroosk8a
lol. I think what he was trying to say is "If you are AF and you turn the focus regular (manual?) will it ruin the AF on your camera?"
EggChops 1 year ago
@EggChops if that is the question, then yes, turn the focus ring manually while in AutoFocus mode you will ruin in AF motor

Should I buy this or go for the 70-300?
delavegaz6 1 year ago
go for the 70-300.
SophisticationT 1 year ago
@delavegaz6 personally i would go with the lens i am reviewing. the image stabilization makes a hell of a difference and the 50mm more zoom you get with the 70-300 doesnt make too much difference in reality.
antiheroosk8a 1 year ago 5
Thanks!
delavegaz6 1 year ago
I second that, I've found myself in situations where i HAD to use slow shutter speed, and the IS was more than enough to get me a sharp shot.
The 55-250 is already pretty damn cheap for it's features.
HMRMike 1 year ago
@antiheroosk8a 70-300mm has Image Stabilization , the 75-300mm dosen't..
mamadoo1996 1 year ago
totally agree. The 70-300mm is a junk.

Nice review. I love this lens, it gives a great DoF range when zoomed in that makes it great for portraits. Also very sharp.

I have been using a Canon PowerShot S5-IS since 2007 so I'm used to having a lot of zoom. I'm about to buy an Xsi though and I'm trying to decide whether I should get a 55-250mm IS or a 75-300mm IS lens as a first zoom lens. Can someone help me out in deciding?
alextothehbro 2 years ago
@alextothehbro go with the 75-300mm IS version. my encounters with that lens have been very good. it seems to be a little bit sharper then the 55-250 IS and also gives you 50mm more when fully zoomed in.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
I love this lens...I use the Rebel T1i (500D) and the AF is frustrating at times, but I am satisfied so far...I can't wait to get my hands on a few Ks and get me an L lens, though.
achilles1963 2 years ago
I would have to say that this lenses is actually a good buy if you are really on a budget. It comes standard with the bundle pack of the Xsi kit. I own it and I like it! good review man. I feel the same way with the focus though....
danamezjohn 2 years ago
The sharpness on this lens is above moderate at best I'd say. Compared to even the standard 18-55 IS kit lens from focal lengths 55-150~are barely sharper than pictures the kit lens have taken and its got quite severe vignetting when not stopped down to around f/8.
That being said, the lens is a couple feet away from me, I have it and used it for quite a while and enjoyed it, but having money to upgrade to some L's has totally blown my head out of the water when looking at other basic lenses

muchly recomended!

many reviews said that at 255mm full zoom the pics are not very sharp...i think is good for multy use upgrade, would you reccomend it?
ANTRASPS3 2 years ago
btw is it coming with lens hood?
ANTRASPS3 2 years ago
unfortunatly it does not come with a lens hood. i think canon only saves that for their L glass. and the pictures are sharp at all focal lengths in my experience
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
i have the same lens and at full zoom its not blurry...i would recommend it

I have a 450D now but I'm going to "upgrade" to a 500D. I'm not sure wether to go for a 18-55 /55-250 combi or an ef-s 18-200.. Do you happen to have that lens or have experience with it? Every bit of advice helps :P
Rlonaldd 2 years ago
i do have the lens. and it is extrmely useful. i would recommend to get the 2 bundle lens. the 18-200 is a goo lens but the lack of IS and 50mm makes a big difference.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
why not go for the mid range body like 40D or 50D
infact, 40D is $400 more from 450D.
Deathseeker86 2 years ago
40D and 50D's are nice, but the 500D DOES have 1080P HD movie recording...iv traded up to 40D and lovin it. best decision of my camera career. lol
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
you're using 500D for your camera career? That's good. hehe. you have any flickr or photoblog?

can you show us the sample picture of that lens because i'm planning to buy that lens with my 450D.

Hi
Thanks for the review, I'm looking to buy this lens, since I'm not financially ready for the 70-200L.
Anyway, I wanted to know how is the IS on this lens?
I heard that it becomes useless pass 200mm... is it that bad?
because I would've chosen the 70-200L, however, the IS version is over 1000$....
Thanks!
NorthZephyr 2 years ago
what? IS is usless past 250mm? thats bull. the IS is awesome through out the entire zoom range.

Thanks. That's all I wanted to hear :D

hey antiheroosk8a i play and shoot paintball i was looking into a lense that would capture high speed thing like people diving into bunkers and such. i was going to get a 70-200 but it dosnt have IS and its 550.00 which is something i would need (IS) so is the 55-200 a good all around lense? hows the zoom?
p8ntballer45 2 years ago
hey, well, i have not shot paintball...well, not photographing anyway. but i DO think that it would be an awesome lens to use if you go paint balling during the day with no or little clouds. but if youve got the money, i would DEFINITELY recomend getting the 70-200. you are talking about the f/4 non-is version, and iv used this lens a few times, and its amazing. the bokeh is very nice and the AF is extremely fast. and as long as your shooting during the day, the 70-200would be a better choice.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
i am also upgrading to a 70-200 f/2.8 in the near future. since i just upgraded to a 40D. i may or may not be selling this 55-250 IS. but either way, once i get it, ill do a review on that too. im thinking about doing a 40D review, but not sure. anyone want a detailed 40D review? if not or if so let me know. i know there are already some out, but just wondered if anyone wanted to see a new one.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
the lens is not what determines what objects you can shoot, the shutter speed in a typical lens can go up to 1/4000 of a second. if its a canon. i have shot moving aircraft going about 300-400 at close range. so you should be able to shoot paintballers no matter what lens you have, its all in the camera.
imPuLse1x2 2 years ago
im not sure about rebel cameras but i know in the 20D - 40D you can get all the way up to 1/8000 of a second. but if you want to use that shutter speed you have to be in extremely well light conditions. pretty much, outside, no clouds, sun beating down, and all that good stuff. or you could bump up the iso.. its all about the conditions you are shooting in and adjusting your settings accordingly. you may want to get aquainted with shutter priority (Tv Mode), P8ntballer45.

I'm probly going to get this lens in a couple weeks to go with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, I shoot a lot of sports and wildlife during the daytime so it seems like it'll be perfect for me.
RobbieMiller89 2 years ago
itll be perfect. trust me. especially if youre shooting during the day

hmm im beginner in all these camera things :D and i had olympus digitalcamera with tcon17 and now i have my first canon eos camera whii heh, and i like mostly take pics from distanse.. do ya have any sample pics of this tele tube? and sorry my bad english ...:)

i am in the process of making a slideshow of some sport pictures i have taken to show the comparison of shooting at night and during the day with this lens.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
How slow is the AF? I'm looking to shoot sports and I need to get closer (but I don't have alot of money either). Would this lens do the job or do you think I should just wait?
joshc1107 2 years ago
this lens does an excellent job during the day with sports. the autofocus is excellent and the images sharp. at night you will need to go to probably the highest ISO you can and you will still be using a shutter speed of around 60. if you are using a D line camera then you can go up to 3200ISO and maybe a 100 shutter speed. but yea. i really suggest the 70-200 2.8IS if you are getting paid for these shots. if not. this lens will be excellent.

is this lens that cheap and light that it is a no buy or is it really worth getting???? i am a beginner photographer am i am looking for a zoom lens.

i deff. recommend getting it. you wont be dissappointed
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
hey
what would be better
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III
or canon Canon 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS lens
corey0102 2 years ago
my personal opinion, would be to go with 55-250mm IS. you gain 20mm on the short end but lose 50mm on the long end. but the 30mm different is well compensated for with the IS. the IS is probably my favorite part of the lens.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
nope. the lens is still new looking with no dust inside whatsoever.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
the AF setting doesn't seem to be as bad as you said. it could be worth if you do end up doing a new vid to show more of this to put beeper on with the lens fully out of focus.
jonnyfunguy 2 years ago
it has been pretty slow during different times of use. during the day. it is ok speed. but not as fast as usm. not nearly.
antiheroosk8a 2 years ago
Well that's understandable otherwise there's no point having the USM system different to the micro motor system.
jonnyfunguy 2 years ago
hi please can you put some pic with your lenses thanks
