They did an update of this in the '80s ("The New Gidget"; how original) with former soap opera actress Caryn Richman as "Gidget" (over 10 years younger than Sally Field, BTW). In the show, she was married to "Moondoggie" and had kids. Caryn was in her mid-to-late 20's playing a character that would have been in her late 30s. She was a bit sexier looking than Sally though, slightly more voluptuous as well, but the show really sucked.

GIDGET ran for one full season but the ratings weren't what ABC was hoping for, so they cancelled the show -- even though in summer re-runs it actually pulled in bigger ratings.

Screen Gems had already started developing THE FLYING NUN and ABC had already committed to airing it. If they had attempted to bring back GIDGET, it would have been a much bigger effort. SF was under contract with Columbia/Screen Gems so she had little say so in the matter.

As someone who actually remembers watching "Gidget" (as a 13-year-old, hormone-filled, barely-pubescent boy) something bothers me. In the mid-60's, the network censors were so busy trying to make sure that a female belly-button never appeared on TV, it seems that they made sure Sally Field's bikini bottom went several inches north of her navel but never noticed just how clingy and revealing it is....ummmmmm....farther south.
