I think everyone who is bitching about the strategy of gunpowder armies needs to stfu... The strategy is there just more subtle just fucking deal with it and be happy ur getting a new total war at all... Fuckin first world problems
What if units from all TW games fight each other? That would be:
Samurai vs Ritterbruder vs Spartan Hoplites vs Old Guard vs Coldstreams vs Praetorian/Urban Cohort vs Templar Knights vs Cuirassiers vs Life Guard Cavalry vs Conquistadores
Perhaps it would make more sense if this game was played in China. The country had many more international conflicts with a range of countries and military campaigns within itself.
I don't get it. Why aren't they using arrows. They do more damage than that era's "gatling gun" and if it's dry season, they can just light up the field to burn their enemies. Are the developers just stupid or is this another American propaganda video. Americans didn't even teach the Japanese how to use guns, that's totally inaccurate and full of fail like that piece of shit movie "The Last Samurai".
@Ptossias Uh no...it actually happened in history. Americans came over even though Japan had an isolationist policy. They did not teach the Japanese to use guns, merely introduced new models that far outclassed any guns the Japanese could make, made a few demonstrations and made trade deals. The Japanese went back to killing each other as they had before Americans showed up, the difference being American clients had more cost effective armies.
@DonutSkull Only the civil war? We'll that sounds a little boring, doesnt it? Two or three classes... A span of about 50 years... Only one war... maybe in combination with other events, like the unification of germany, the spanish-american wars, German-French war... But only that single civil war? The Netherlands had a struggle for independence that lasted for 80 years... Even that would be more interesting...
i hope they take out that land divide thing! that was annoying. it would be like oh my god they bought the gatling gun from the americans lets all ally and attack him!
this game sounds like civilization + shogun total war + empire total war...nothing new right? i am still waiting for them to improve the agent system (such as double agent actions you know having a combination of two agents for a task?)
i also wished that they improve the battle system too...
@dogggfight9999999999 It depends on what you want. FotS and Shogun 2 are massively different in their settings, units, tactics, and overall feel. Shogun 2 takes place in the Sengoku period of Japan, while FotS is set 300 years later.
@movieguru18301 Not only that, make expansion packs for the imperial dynasties! Japan is beautiful and historical but truh is, it's a tiny island, I want to control the asian mainland with a map from the middle east to the pacific ocean! hahaha
@Justinian43 Exactly, Chinas history is deep in conflict and war. The game would be such a hit and could provide the grounds for armies of extreme sizes
@movieguru18301 Exactly! And SEGA could get away from the gunpowder total wars and go back to classic warfare total wars while exposing the history, culture and military systems of imperial china. And they could add the mongol hordes there as well! haha (truth is, the "gunpowderification" of total war sort of killed the strategy, i pray they don't come out with "world war 1 total war" lol)
You are saying they killed the tactics. Strategy is the big plan, tactics are the specific movements on the battlefield. But I don't see why the use of guns should lack tactics...I would love to see a Renaissance Total War that covers the era between Medieval and Europe/Napoleon. Or a TW Great War...It makes tactics more special and not just spears in the center, cavalry on the flanks and archers harrassing and pulling back.
Oh really? so old warfare isn't as tactical as gunpowder warfare? Yeah look how it changed war, it made armies be more sissy wth advent of cannons and missiles and bombs. Today's warfare allows you to bomb cities and fortified areas. WOW VERY TACTICAL!!! The work that would be accomplished by a thousand under the head of a capable leader can be achieved with a bomb or missile. Very "tactical"
@Justinian43 The old-world equivalent of using a bomb would be having thousands of soldiers charge an enemy in brute force... even less tactical than using a bomb, and even more extreme.
But there are many things that can't be done using a bomb or a missile. Today's infantry is expected to take much more personal initiative and carry with them a much larger variety of tools to the battlefield. I'd consider that to be more tactical than simply having one commander who designates all the tactics.
um no? a bomb you can't stop, a massive horde you can outsmart and outmaneuver. There are plenty of battles in which massive forces have clashed against very small forces and suffered embarrassing defeats or Pyrrhic victories. So according to you yesterday's soldiers were mindless bots under one commander, a spartan or a samurai could slice any modern marine to bits.
@Justinian43 It helped when the smaller force was better equipped.
Bombs are not tactical, they are lest resort when tactics fail. Tactics are sending in small squads to do the job of an army. Disrupt enemy lines, take out key personnel from a distance to reduce casualties on your side, thus preventing the expense of replacing them. The main goal for modern warfare is simply to cause as much expense to the enemy at minimal cost to you. It's why armies clashing no longer work.
I would actually say if you think about all the war planning today's warfare is much more tactical and more precise with communication. There's just so much more to it. But I think you'll find that a general's role and the on the battlefield tactics were much more important before the advent of truly modern warfare. It just does not work the same way anymore. Either way, war is abhorrent but I despise modern warfare more. I enjoy studying and playing anything from older stuff.
@Justinian43 And don't call soldiers today sissy because they use guns. Don't go on about how it lacks honor or some such garbage. Because honor was a notion invented by warlords so that their underlings who threw their lives away would feel like their death mattered.
No, you are saying something different! I said that tactics changed but they were still there. I wasn't talking about nowadays precision warfare. Muskets took a long time to reload, long pikes needed to give them protection (tactic). Riflemen had to line up to fire a volley with effect. Canons were ideal for wiping squares who were ideal for fighting cavalry.
That takes much more tactical genius than having a bunch of spearman trying to outlfank the opposing spearman. Not?
But Prussians and the French trained the Japanese Armies, not the fucking Americans.
It's like Rome: Total War all over again, they try to make leeways with history but once historically accurate mods (like EB) come out, the mods end up being more fun than the vanilla.
@Siluriuskaeso Except in this game, modding is nearly impossible. However, you are correct. Instead of making these almost fantasy-level expansion packs, why not work on your previous two games, where the modders are begging for commodity-level support?

@winkieater69 No that would ruin the whole deal. Modern Total war would be fucking boring, the charm of the first total wars was tactic, swordfighting, using cav, archers, etc. Modern war is sooo boring and stupid, guns guns guns and missiles, fuck that shit! I'd rather use my brain in the battlefield. No offence...
@SMGSilveRLeadeR I'm saying modern warfare is boring. In napoleon's age, armies and ground battles were still the main strategy, modern warfare relies on who has the biggest missiles....
Yeah america is so awesome! Shitty healthcare, high crime rate, big percentage being ignorant christian evanglists LOL,racism, goverment corruption, high unemployment rate.
I am really really hoping that just one day soon in my lifetime, Total war will come up with a game set in the Zhanguo period (Warring States period) of China. Most of the games related go only to the Shanguo or 1550s wich I'm tired of.
ye hi guys havnt got much pc knowledge but will this processor run this smoothly? "Intel Sandybridge i5-2500 Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, Socket 1155)"
@123swierstra Ikr, I wish they didn't get this far in the world and expand to more powerful weaponss -________-. But It doesn't mean the user behind a gun is unbeatable I guess.
I don't understand whatever happened to the Samurai's ranged gunpowder weapons like muskets and cannons?? Btw, In the late 1600's a Chinese army officer invented a gun that fired 28 bullets continuously before reloading. The man was Dai Zi. However, he was framed by a court official and banished. His invention never equipped the Chinese army. Technically, the Chinese invented the Machine Gun first. believe it or not.
@daribud Yes actually...... America brought Japan into the imperial age..... 1 by setting in motion the Meiji restoration and 2. Commodore Matthew C. Perry's forray into japanese waters in 1852-54 which forced them into the modern age
The abandonment of the samurai tradition allowed the Japanese to become an imperial nation that could compete with the Europeans which had a hold on the world during that time. The very quick modernization of Japan during the Meiji period allowed it to avoid the faith of most other Asian nations.

Warring States: Total war - where Sun Tzu became the legend!
Mrasianpopmusic 4 weeks ago
I am really really hoping that just one day soon in my lifetime, Total war will come up with a game set in the Zhanguo period (Warring States period) of China. Most of the games related go only to the Shanguo or 1550s wich I'm tired of.

@123swierstra Ikr, I wish they didn't get this far in the world and expand to more powerful weaponss -________-. But It doesn't mean the user behind a gun is unbeatable I guess.

I wonder if America will be a faction in this game?
Kersey475 1 month ago
I don't understand whatever happened to the Samurai's ranged gunpowder weapons like muskets and cannons?? Btw, In the late 1600's a Chinese army officer invented a gun that fired 28 bullets continuously before reloading. The man was Dai Zi. However, he was framed by a court official and banished. His invention never equipped the Chinese army. Technically, the Chinese invented the Machine Gun first. believe it or not.

so your telling me america created imperial japan
daribud 1 month ago
@daribud Yes actually...... America brought Japan into the imperial age..... 1 by setting in motion the Meiji restoration and 2. Commodore Matthew C. Perry's forray into japanese waters in 1852-54 which forced them into the modern age
Adamhistorybuff in reply to daribud (Show the comment) 1 month ago
i loved the contrast.
theNICAguy 1 month ago
The abandonment of the samurai tradition allowed the Japanese to become an imperial nation that could compete with the Europeans which had a hold on the world during that time. The very quick modernization of Japan during the Meiji period allowed it to avoid the faith of most other Asian nations.
