I never understood why people ever argue about the meanings of songs. I don't go into an art museum and argue with passers by about the meaning of the piece that I'm looking at. Everyone is looking/hearing this masterpiece with 'their' ears .. a person can never accurately describe the perspective of another person. What's important is what this song means to each of us .. even though our opinions differ from one another. Stop arguing and just enjoy this already.

@fokeet Exactly...people seem to presume an awful lot, which I don't quite understand. I can only guess that they haven't *really* read the lyrics carefully enough to understand that all these things they "know" are just their own opinions. Of course there's nothing wrong with having an opinion, but to state that your interpretation is the ONLY one is nonsense (and diminishes Morrissey's fine abilities as a writer)

I think that 90% of people understand that the song is about tragic, collective regret that we all share at times. The other 10% insist that their narrow interpretation of the lyrics is the only one. Added bonus: I think these same people have inside info on Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening"! Stay tuned for them to reveal EXACTLY what promises he has to keep, as well as the precise location of the woods!

The song lyrics do not explicitly state these things, and Morrissey isn't on record anywhere discussing the exact meaning of this song, or how it relates to him, personally. For all we know it's a third person confession of a gangster.

@heiff He did mention on one his concerts In Mexico about his support to the gay community and also congratulate them for their gay marriage recognition and then he sang There is a place in hell for me and my friends" coincidence ??  I know this because I was there. so most likely is about his homosexuality. I have no doubts.

It is about AIDS. It is about suffering and solidarity in suffering, among other thngs. What do YOU think it's about? Most people who listen to this music are just self pitying suburbanites who have nothing better to do than cry and whine to their mommas about not having enough. Did I hit a nerve sweetheart?
