  • I also wanted to say you don't train a voice like that- that's a God given talent from birth!

  • Allsion Krauss amazing talent amazing voice!

  • Bonnie Raitt's version is the best!

  • This is so very.......beautiful <3<3

  • Love this above all the other versions !

  • Very pretty. This is one of the two most beautiful love songs in the English language (the other being "A Heart Needs a Home", also by Richard Thompson). I've never heard anyone do wrong by it, but the original (Richard and Linda Thompson, from "Pour Down Like Silver") is still the best.

  • There is NO better female voice alive than her!

  • Sweeeeeeeet.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love her version...it touches my heart!

  • A fine song!!

  • I like Allison Krauss ..I love her voice...I love her musicial skills ...and most of all I like how she has managed to stay grounded in the roots of her music ...she is true to her music ..and true to herself......what a wonderful star she is ......

  • I don't have the CD yet, but this song is already my absolute favourite. Can't wait to hear it live in Glasgow on 10th November 2011 :-D

  • I like alison's version but Mary Black's is my favourite

  • I love the simplicity of this song and the lyrics and the Celtic influences in the melody tug at the heartstrings and make it memorable.

  • I love this song!!!! so fitting.

  • I first heard this being done by David Gilmore , then realized it was on a Bonnie Raitt cd I have. And now this . Breath taking . Akus is so perfectly matched as musicians they are greater than their individual impressive talents . Just beautiful. Perfectly beautiful.

  • What an incredible voice. Chills down my spine.

  • I love her voice on this song, really love it. I miss the vocal harmony as Richard Thompson sings in the original version though - that's what really makes the song for me.

  • This is a beautiful version of this song. In fact, it is so beautiful I looked up the author, Richard Thompson. Wow. Two gifts: AKUS song and a lead to a great, great writer and guitarist RT.

  • If this Alison's version of this song doesn't break your heart, you are heartless.

  • Richard Thompson is the most underrated songwriter of the last century.

  • @grtflmark Richard Thompson is not that underrated. Most music critics rate him very, very highly.

  • Alison evokes a heartbroken, reflective sense of longing,

felt especially more keenly in a quiet moment, at the dimming of the day.

Very poignant for me, because my son used this beautiful, lament on a youtube "Appeal for Creagan," sadly to no avail! :-(

  • Alison Krauss is a gift from God to all Mankind.

  • 823....my Jed....missing your voice, your love, your presence. I'm still needing you at the dimming of the day.

  • When the days are dimming we need the companionship of our Lord.

God has given this wonderful lady a voice that cant be just comparable.

    God bless you Alison.

  • love. ♥

  • I miss you...You know who it is for....Really listen my love.

  • I can't listen to this without tears streaming down my face. It's the most heart-breaking thing I've ever heard.

  • Absolutely one of the truest voices I have heard. I have been a huge fan of each member of the band for their talents each in their own field. They are more than masters of their craft - This song - perfect brings tears to an old man. Thank you AK & US - come visit Australia.

  • Heard this sing in Limbo the John Sayles film. Alison's version is of course heads and shoulders above the rest. The arrangement is off the cuff.

  • @kocean1

    ?Que?

"...off the cuff." ----------impromptu / spontaneous / unrehearsed ?

    or

"...off the chart." ----------------unquantifiable / immeasurable / spectacularly overwheming ?

If this recording was unrehearsed,it matters; and makes me much more of a Fan.

And it most certainly IS "spectacularly overwhelming".

  • great song

  • it sounds like an Irish ballad

  • @k3304 Just heard this played on the radio - Celtic Sojourn / WGBH Boston 89.7.Came here to listen again. This whole album, Paper Airplane is a keeper.

  • this is not one she'll sing live i can tell but oh how i wish she would ~ one can dream :)

  • @sephorarubio --she did at Santa Barbara Bowl...just as beautiful as the recording.

  • I always thought Mary Black did it best. I stand corrected!

  • Her voice is like being enveloped in a velvet cocoon. Stunning.

  • I just don't know how she does it. Of all the beautiful vocals she has done . . . and now this one.

  • This version beats them all. Stripped back and basic - just like Ricaerd and Linda's orignial. Voice and guitar. then with basic harmony. So poignant!

  • Her incredible silky voice that beautifully hits all the high notesmakes this one of the best versions. And Bonnie Raitt can hit those notes too. I still like RT's 2005 California solo performance with his unique guitar playing. Another good one is Richard and Linda's cut on their" pour down like silver" record where he backs her up.

  • This version knocks the socks off all the other versions, including the guy who wrote the song! There is a Mary Mastrantonio version that is also haunting but the combination of vocal flow and blue grass in this version is better than anything else. There are also Gilmour and Bonnie Raitt versions but this is #1

  • She really makes you feel the longing, doesn't she? Heartbreaking ... AKUS has done it again.

  • Bst version I've ever heard!

  • the one more thing on my "bucket list" : see alison krauss live!

  • Alison Krauss is truly a rare talent

  • its nice to come to a comment section, where everyone agrees on one simple piece of common sense-The simple beauty of an ageless masterpiece..Mabye someday, a BRaitt-AKrauss duet at the rock and roll hall of fame 50th???

    Hopefully sooner.

  • Beautiful...

  • Yes, there are a variety of versions of this beautiful song, but this is the lone one that leaves me speechless. The voice of an angel, she has...

  • Noone could do it better......!!

  • @supergrneyes

I do love Alison. There's no one like her. This is great, as usual. But on this particular tune Bonnie Raitt gives her a run for her money. I guess I prefer Bonnie's version.

  • Lovely version of one of Richard Thompson's finest creations.

  • Absolutely floors me. She owns this song no matter who wrote it or sings it.

  • Alison Krauss singing a Richard Thompson song. Could this get any better?

  • What a great version of this song she does! It's beautiful.

  • What an Angelic voice Alison Krauss has....Absolutely magnificent!!!!

Of course, The band Union Station is equally magnificent also....

May God bless Alison Krauss & the band Union Station, and all their families!!!!

  • Simply the best to ever sing a tune...
