Great performance! I'm just not sure why a keytar is being shown or "used". You can't hear anything from it. It's just to keep the hands busy. As a keyboardist, it's disappointing to see a keytar and often distracts from the performance. I find myself focusing in on it to see if it was used in some useful way. It wasn't in this case.
No one does it better than Steely Dan. What a groove, what a mood. They not only take music to another level but write the best lyrics around. Always surrounded by the best musicians, who can't wait to play on their recordings or the next live gig. As a musican growing up with their music they have always been my musical goal. love their music...
@jamieblond1 I'm sorry, what did you say? I was busy reading the National Probe, and I didn't quite catch that. (Wax your chest?) Ok, I did hear you, I was just pretending. Actually, that sounds even better. I like a woman with a smooth chest.
@MisterIanPickering Sorry, but you're SOS; it's not a natural hump. ( Pssst.....I confess to having an immeasurable problem with having a straight, vertical back.) Humps are so much sexier.
I've been told that my hump obsession is a little weird. Do you think that it's strange, too?
@jamieblond1 I don't know, I've never dated a hunchback. I suspect the novelty of the hump might wear off. Oh, yeah, sure, at first it would be stellar. Check it out, I've got a hunchback woman. Making all those guys with flat-backed women all jealous. Excuse me, make way for my hunchback woman, coming through. Feel free to stare, you wish. Yeah, I'm willing to give it a go, what the heck, you like the Dan.
@MisterIanPickering I have a hunch.....a hunch that one hump may not be enough for you. Why did you say that "the novelty of the hump might wear off?" I was under the impression that you were looking for a serious, deep, long-term relationship with a classy hunchback.
FYI, I've been considering having additional hump enhancement. They say that two humps are better than one. (Oh wait, I think that's 'heads')
Btw....I'm afraid that you'll drop me for the first weirdly deformed woman who goes by.
@jamieblond1 Who said anything about "classy'? Come to think of it, I don't recall saying anything about serious, deep or long term. Now, weirdly deformed, that does have a certain appeal. Take off that mask and let me get a good look at you.
@MisterIanPickering Please forgive me, but I can't take it off.....the mask, that is. I would do that only for true, undying love, but all you're interested in is a fling with a salacious slut, unfortunately.
Nevertheless, would you take off your mask if you were weirdly deformed?
@jamieblond1 I'm beginning to think you've just been playing with my affections, that you don't really have a hump (OR a hunch), no weird deformity at all, that all you're hiding behind that mask is a pretty face. I've been let down before, but don't worry. I could learn to love a goddess, even though I don't even have a fire escape.
@MisterIanPickering Au contraire, mon frere! I'm not playing with your affections. I don't even play with my food.....anymore.
I've been let down before, too. In fact, years ago a boy in school told me the same thing. He professed to having an affinity for weirdly deformed female creatures but alas, once he got into my you-know-what, I learned that all of it was just a huge steaming pile of b*llsh*t.
I'm not accusing you of that, but.....if your pants are on fire, you should have a fire escape.
@Doodlebopbop99 .....Jim is probably the best "bone" player on the planet!!!!! ...and a great guy, too! We grew up in the same neighborhood. When he's back home in Butler PA, he stops by to check out our gigs. We have a running joke that when Steely Dan is in town, they come to see "our" show!
I read onetime where Fagen reckoned that Aja was Steely Dan at their best. It is a classic among many classics. Is it their best? I'm inclined to agree with Mr. F. What about the rest of you musical aficionados???
I've looked through and listened to most of Becker and Fagen's live videos here. Their music and their talent is classic. I love 'em both to death even if Don was a bit acerbic when I came up to him in West Palm Beach during his 2 Against Nature Tour while he was in the crowd watching the all chick warmup act (was it the Gigi DeNisco Band?) Having said that, there comes a time when your past catches up with your vocal chords and you have to call it a (stellar) career. It's that time guys...
In the studio version they used a bassoon for that deep reed sound. Instruments like that are used mainly in orchestras. It has a darkness to it which makes it a little spooky. I heard that same sound in monster movies like Godzilla filmed in 1954 in black and white.
I'm a jazz musician. When ever I drive west on Sunset through Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood and finally out to Malibu....it is "the end of a perfect day" and I play this tune as I drive....not because I want to go to Malibu, but because I want to re-live this music visually just as Steely Dan wrote it when they drove west on Sunset. This band is the Dom Perignon of pop music. Euphoria. Since the l970's, I'm still in love with this music...and I always will be. -Dennis Edwards Music.
There's a deceptive ease to the performance that only the truly great ensembles achieve (I'm thinking Stevie Wonder in particular - always tight and polished). Achingly cool!
I heard this track for the first time in 1984, (I know it it´s from 1980). It's been a milestone in my music listen since then. I love you Steely keep on going.
do yourselves a favor and buy this DVD if you haven't already, the sound is amazing, I didn't know all my surround speakers worked until I played this.
I agree this is true music I grew up listening to this kind of music I still love hip hop but I would rather listen to this any day. You all need to listen to aja by steely Dan if you like that I no a lot more
They are too busy chewing on all that synthetic crap that passes for music.
These guys are composers and their music is complex and easy to listen to and enjoy. The sax player I think is Cornelius Bumpus. I met him in Modesto some years back. He was teaching at Columbia College near San Andreas.
Anyways, these musicians are not slouches. They are the best.
HI-DONALD, I HAVE THE GOUCHO CD AND THE NIGHT-FLY. THE MUSIC REALLY INFLUENCED ME IN A GOOD WAY !! NATURALLY SOME OTHER STEELY DAN STUFF. HOPE YOU ARE DOING FINE, MATTHIAS- GERMANY
The beauty is in the fact that it sounds so close to the album version .. BUT live.. you have to imagine how in the studio they use over dubbing and all kinds of wizardry.. but live.. Man that is pure talent...
@cajunsushi Actually only for a few weeks. The players that W&D hire are professional musicians. All can sight read and they chart out their own music from notes during rehearsal. The trumpet player does all the horn arrangements, Donald works with the other keyboard player and the B/U singers. Vicky Cave that backup singer on the far left also plays alto sax AND is a professional ice skater.
@cajunsushi I have been a huge fan of Steely Dan since, well, since I can remember. The boys are known for hiring the best there are and that can be discovered from the players list on any of their albums. The 2 Against Nature DVD ( which this is from ) also had a lot of back story on it eg: Vicky Cave. All of the people they hire are working musicians and most are quite well known sidemen. Some have gone big ( Michael McDonald ) and some have changed careers ( Denny Dias ).
US Air Force 1980, Robins AFB, Security Police L.E. This album (Guacho) was one of my favorites that year. Pink Floyd's "The Wall," The Jimi Hendrix "Experience," The Cars "Candy-O," AC/DC's "Back In Black," Billy Joel's "Glass Houses," Pat Benatar's "In The Heat of The Night," Scorpions "Love Drive," Van Halen's "Women and Children First." Some of the best damn rock and roll ever, sorry if I'm forgetting a few but the years they do fly by, don't they?
There is nothing better than this live version!! What a wonder! SD rocks and I hope to see them on July 2nd in Seattle. What a rock/jazz fusion band!!!!! I love this group and their music - love WB & DF.
I was very fortunate to see this band live in 2005. The music was so crisp and clear, it blew me away. Huge fan..they were great in the 70's when I was a teen and today in my 50's. These guys know music!!! If you ever get the chance to see them...go!!!
The man who won a Grammy engineering the studio track of this tune, Roger Nichols (who won a total of 6 Grammys with Steely Dan) has been battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer and after many months in the hospital is destitute. If you can, please help Roger and his family by going to his website rogernichols dot c o m and giving generously! Thanks.
If I wasn't so familiar with their (SD) abilities and perfection, I'd thinks this was a lip sync. Ah but they're too professional and don't have to act. They are the real deal. I could listen to this and others all day long......oh......but I am.
If I wasn't so familiar with their (SD) abilities and perfection, I'd thinks this was a lip sync. Ah but their too professional and don't have to act. They are the real deal. I could listen to this and others all day long......oh......but I am.
@Lockbar - Yeah, this DVD's way-better than the "Alive In America" CD. No Dennis Chambers on drums (He hits too-hard IMO - He needs to learn a thing or two about dynamics). I like this guy a lot better.
@Lockbar my thoughts exact. espec impressive for a studio band to be able to approach the sound of their recordings. then again, they are super-professional musicians.
Finest band in the whole world and land..just kick back and listen, think with a beautiful creative mind, and travel or imagine, just good clean thoughts...beautiful music...forever... :)
Gulfmar.... And musicians enough like Steely to spend the time it takes to record an album like say Aja. They picked every part of a note apart until they got it perfect dead on, no exceptions. It shows. They are so great. Gotta love The Dan!
"Drink Kerschwasser from a shell, SanFrancisco show and tell ... " they made as many California references as they did New York - the Dan in the 1970s truly were the class of the lot.
The recording industry supports this music to this day, SD is the foundation of the best American music ever made, the perfect blend of all things American, jazz, funk, rock, blues.....we're sounding like our Fathers, music is timeless....at least the great music.
Thing I always liked about Steely Dan was that the music was first and foremost. These players had chops to spare and could play circles around most everybody but the music was always patient and melodic, no technical flash artists in this band but master players operating at the height of their craft.
Ah, memories...I love love love Steely Dan, and this is one of my faves. "Drive west on Sunset, to the sea...turn that jungle music down, just until we're out of town..." I know exactly where they're singing about, been on that road a thousand times myself.

Thanks.

Interesting song about interracial dating.

Becker and Fagen never accepted anyone except the best of the best session musicians around. That is why they still cease to amaze.

If I wasn't so familiar with their (SD) abilities and perfection, I'd thinks this was a lip sync. Ah but they're too professional and don't have to act. They are the real deal. I could listen to this and others all day long......oh......but I am.

Great live song, so close to the original.

Steely Dan is one ugly bastard, but he sings really well, great song.

@sizedoctor , please educate yourself.
Andy1000K 11 months ago
@sizedoctor Steely Dan is the name of the band, dude. But, yeah, Fagen is ugly. Mostly because he's a pretentious and arrogant prig.
Good music though.

Steely Dan is a true essential in my collection. Clean, classic, thought and emotion provoking, smooth... pure.

How can there be dislikes for this? Is it people looking for Britney or something who have lost their way? Perfection!!

I'm amazed how this live version sounds so much like the original studio track. Ultra professionals, here.
Lockbar 1 year ago 52
@Lockbar - Yeah, this DVD's way-better than the "Alive In America" CD. No Dennis Chambers on drums (He hits too-hard IMO - He needs to learn a thing or two about dynamics). I like this guy a lot better.
gangtwanger 1 year ago
@Lockbar my thoughts exact. espec impressive for a studio band to be able to approach the sound of their recordings. then again, they are super-professional musicians.
