I love Mamet (well, his plays not his politics) but MAN this was a terrible film. Edmond, Sparta, Redbelt...I don't think Mamet has another "Glengarry" or "American Buffalo" in him. Too bad he's resorted to writing tribalistic screeds about how all Jews can be divided into "religious" and "self-hating" and anyone who dares to criticize a single action of the Israeli government is an anti-semite. Boo.
@sleepcity It was an EXCELLENT film. It was about adherence to personal principles and overcoming adversity through those principles. There should be more like it. I'm sick of Hollywood eye candy with no moral to the story other than "don't fuck with our hero". What made it good was the fact that unlike most of the SHIT out there, it had a story with people and drama and interaction. I cared about the protagonist and in the end I cared about his principles. Sometimes, they're all you have.
@ejarrett You obviously have no understanding of MMA and the technicalities involved. Especially the ground game. I love MMA because it more closely resembles a "real" fight. Boxing is fun to watch but now that the majority of people out there can tell it ISN'T what a real fight is like, they have to educated themselves to enjoy it. I'd recommend you do the same with the elements of MMA. To a certain extent, perception is reality.
Ive talked to a cpl people who worked at Second City when he was there an they all said the same thing, they said that Mamet is one of the biggest assholes ever to come thru 2nd City.
Mamet is great, his plays sound like movie scripts, has a great attitude regarding the teaching of Method acting, trained such acting greats as Joe Mantegna, William Macy, and Felicity Huffman.
That's what I thought. I've read his criteria for an actor and it's very short: along the lines of clear diction and supply body. And that's it. Someone mentions his attitude on Method acting, I want to hear more -- but apparently there is no more to be heard.
Ehh...David Mamet is brilliant in the sense that he has convinced people that he is brilliant. In fact I find only a few of his plays to be tolerable as he does little more than regurgitate what he's written previously. His terrible plays are fucking awful, his "great" ones are alright if you prefer profanity to real meaningful dialogue.
@VanHowle Listen to real people talk some time. There isn't much "real dialogue" and there's lots of profanity. In its own way Mamet's writing is very real.
What an honor it is to be a part of this camp! My coach Chris Lisciandro and his coach renato magno are both part of this movie! BJJC STREET SPORTS!!!!!!
I've got stunts, fight scenes, and real fight footage up on myspace "DanTheWolfman" . Mr. Mamet please have me in another film, it was great being involved.
Was the best production I ever worked on. Would love to work with Mamet again, Great vision and supportive to everyone including the stuntman and Extras. I play Toro's Handler. Toro was played by African Heavyweight Boxing Champion Peter Smith whom beat up Daredevil's Dad. I am holding mitts for him in one scene.
I don't have to be specific so stupid people like you can understand me. You should have a level of intelligence before you respond to my comment calling me "suburbanite"... haha...
Now you expect me to be a mind reader because you're to lazy to secify yourself.LOL, Fuckball..speak for yourself "Why DM talking like he's in the mob..?" Not only is that question ridiculous..it's childish. Is that intelligence? Idiot.
Okay bitchrod, my comment was straightforward. In the English language we have something called a simile. Can you say that? Simile. Now, a simile is a comparison using the words "like" or "as." So if someone says, "He's talking like he's in the mob?" that means that he's not actually in the mob, but is being compared to the mob.
Savorist- Number one, you're confusing with somebody who gives a good fart about what you have to say...so don't try so hard on your silly, boring repartees. Number Two, you might want to practice on not being so sensitive to other people's remarks...you might give off the wrong impression about yourself, sissyboy. Number three, think before you post childish similes next time....Not once did Mr Mamet mentioned anything about "whacking" anybody..or breaking anyone's legs. Capisca?
Nice to see MMA getting some positive press. Often MMA is portrayed as needless violent or a "cock fight" where human heart, drive and devotion to the arts are ignored. Nice piece. Thanks for posting.

People who proclaim "Boxing is dead" are idiots, what do you think the Greeks and Romans did ?
MMA is cool but not to the level of specificity and rules that boxing has...I might as well watch someone with an icepick.
ejarrett 1 year ago
The greeks and romans did wrestling, not boxing.
Diedrupo 1 year ago
@Diedrupo They also did a sort of boxing although obviously is wasn't called that any more than their wrestling was called wrestling.

What's his attitude on Method acting?
ThreeGunFish 3 years ago
Read True and False and it'll explain all of his feelings on acting.

Actually he doesn't believe in acting training.
