  • Proof that not all of Rod's late '70s output was cheesy Hollywood rock star piffle. Probably the first song to deal with the difficult issue of homophobia. I'm sure Rod paid a price for it, with all the rumors of his so-called biosexuality. Not to mention his nicking of the melody of the Beatles "Don't Let Me Down" for the last part of the song - a fact that wasn't lost on John Lennon, who mentioned it on his 1980 Playboy interview.

  • I have always loved this song so much. I cried so hard the first time I heard it. What a horribly sad subject. I am always upset by those who are victims of such outright hatred. I was lucky to grow up with a mother who had gay friends, including my uncle (my father's brother) through whom she met my father. I knew from a very early age that we are all just people and we should not hate based on such trivial things. Rod is an amazing songwriter and singer. I am so glad he recorded this song.

  • this song has been vastly underated over the years....but at the time of its release it wasnt heard of hetro men talking about gays let alone listerning to a song about them.....then along comes a group called Queen and are an instant success and amazingly the lead singer is gay arent we hetro men funny people......

  • You forget what a poignant singer, songwriter this guy is,how he,s put it together so well all these years.Priceless stuff, storytelling music.Heard this today and actually listened to it through properly and was blown away.God bless Rod,and radio 2.

  • when i was young i used to crawl up in my moms bed when she wasn't home and play her 8-track of a night on the town this has always been my Favorite song By Rod Stewart still has the same felling as it did 30 years ago

  • Geez who gives a fuck if you gay straight or brindle? Great song for tolerance for all of us. Nice one Rod.

  • Like a Russell Brand wannabe, but less ugly and infinitely more talented.

  • I'm straight and I luv it!...

  • Great song, one of my favourites. (And NO I'm not gay).

I just appreciate what I like.

  • I had this 45 (flipside of 'The first cut is the deepest). It was so long, it sometimes didn't make it till the end, lol!

  • HAPPY 67TH BIRTHDAY ROD!

  • Every time i hear this song, i think of my friend Tabi. I first heard this after she was beat up for being a lesbian. I love this song, it sends a great message. So what if you're homosexual? We're all human...

  • There's a fine line between being "influenced" and blatantly copying someone else's work. Part II of this song stomps right across that line into Don't Let Me Down territory.

  • @frecklefart500 Right!I love this song and the msg but kept trying to figure out what other song the ending reminded me of & can't believe I didn't get it on my own since "Don't Let Me Down" is also one of my faves..Thanks!--Also,the lyrics say they were just looking to roll some innocent passer by.....that means rob them.....so I don't think it had to do with homophobia really & Rod didn't say that it did either.

  • @MsThunderkiss69 - Good comment.

  • Uclrichard Your wrong society is far more accepting of homosexualty than it was in the seventys. Most normal people couldn't give a shit if someone is gay. I'm not gay and I couldn't care less. I'm sure Rod Stewart would release this. I've read he's very proud of this song. I'm obviously talking about the civilised world here.

  • Stewart here shows he is really good as I thought he was when this track first came out. It's been a while but if you really listen, even today, you can tell he's a master at this. You don't have to be gay to appreciate this. A really sad story and pathetic how we live. He keeps us all together somehow.

  • it's sad to think that this great song probably wouldn't get released these days...american and european society has become more homophobic with every passing year, and the word 'gay' has become a gross insult. no pop star (especially one with rod's fame) would even dare record this.

  • 7 Dislikes ?????? tossers !!!

  • Just love Rod<3

  • Rod Stewart is one of the greatest story tellers that ever stepped foot on the worid

  • Love him so much xx this is one of his best xxx

  • I LOVE ROD AND ALL THE HATES CAN KISS MY ASS!

ROD HAS HAD MORE BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN HIS LIFE AND MARRIED TO THAN ANY OF YOU HATERS WILL EVER HAVE IN YOUR WET DREAMS! So hate on bitches!

  • one of his top songs in my humble opinion

  • @ Butterfly1Blue Hey, thought you'd like to know this. I read up on the song, N the only inaccuracy is that Georgie was killed in '74, but he changed it when he was unable to come up with a rhyme...

  • @ILoveCurves88 - I don't know where I read it now (I have a lot of books on and around the subject of Rod) but when he was living with Brit at Cranbourne Court it was she he turned to if he needed to finish off a line. Of course there is no writing credit acknowledging this "fact"?

  • @ Butterfly1Blue I'm guessing you knew, but in case... LOL

  • @ILoveCurves88 - No, I didn't know it was totally factual - thought it was just based around fact. It's such a great song though...

  • @ Butterfly1Blue Did you know that' it's totally factual? I saw him perform it on a Simulcast concert, (Aired live) on a Mississippi channel, N as he finished singing the last line of Part 1 he broke down crying N ran off the stage for a minute...

  • rod is gorgeous

  • excellent lyrics and so true

  • i am not sure what most are on about, women find him attractive, i would guess most men would like to be him, i no i would. mind you ronnie wood said , he,s tighter than 2 coats of paint on a wall. but still he,s written some good songs and he,s talented.

  • can you check out my songs need subscribers songs ruff but all original***********you may even enjoy it****Apex13 thanks ;]

  • Karls favorite song.

  • His Greatest song!

  • Never wait, nor hesitate, cause you may never have another chance.

  • This song starts with "oh Georgie Stay" ..... the rest is in one ear out the other.

  • In this video Rod Stewart comes across as queer as a three dollar bill. Great song, though.

  • Thumbs up if you first heard this song on XFM:s "The Ricky Gervais Show" with Smerch and Karl the K-man Pilkers!

  • I love his music.

  • why can't we all just get along?? great song, the words are awesome

  • his best band ,since beck

  • Maybe the first song about the hatred of fhomophobes.

  • One of his greatest

  • Rod is a lovely guy, I've liked him for so long don't even want to remember how long, Bet he looks at this now and has a little smile.

  • 66 years old, same age as my grandmother, and from the same town as well, and you still can't pay me enough to take a kick in the shin from either of em..

  • its a great song. i am hetro. i can still see the hatred to bi's or gays not from ireland. but online.

  • Just enjoy the music this man is great.

  • @dwguy2

    Me,too

  • Part II makes me cry

  • I'm an ex-homophobe, ty for getting me past that w/this song, this song tells you, LOve is LOve, no matter the sex(btw, for all you homphobes) no I'm not gay, what would it matter.....it's the 21st century

  • PILKINGTON!

  • what a ledend

  • one of the greatest lyrical lines ever; "along the boulevards he cruised and all the old queens blew a fuse" :)...

  • roy west

  • yeah so Rod is not A hottie or Pretty Boy BUt those IMPERFECTION'S did not solidify HIS STATUS. GREAT SONG'S SUCH AS THIS ONE DID! AND MORE ,WHERE SOON TO FOLLOW. I HAVE TO ASK WHAT HAVE YOU DONE MICHAELCAMPBELL69 THAT WILL COMPARE TO THIS AND WITHHOLD THE STANDS OF TIME?

  • wonderful piece of music...this song is to all those that i know that are gay i love them so much ....and if anyone dont like then well to damn sad

  • New York in the 70's ..

  • Great song.

  • Great song but Rod is an ugly git big nose narrow face and those thin lips what do girls see in him

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 - I have to admit to asking myself the very same question especially in relation to this video (think he had a nose-job later on in the 70's). Personally the interior Rod was enhanced by the exterior. Surely imperfect men have to try harder and vice-versa...

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Nah, I think Rod's extremely good-looking and I know lots of people that would agree with me. As to the nose - that's a terrible angle and even worse lighting, like the 'You're In My Heart' promo. Lips? You must think Mick Jagger is sexy (not that I have anything against him). C'mon, guys don't need to be like pouting fish. Oh, and 'narrow face' definitely depends on angle/lighting too (example - 'She Won't Dance With Me' promo). Agree about the great song, though!

  • @kapat45 michael camp says it all

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Are you some kind of Supermodel yourself? Rod looks cool in this. Nobody is perfect and its the inperfections that create the character. I don't normally curse on Youtube but Fuck you.

  • @knmurphy1 - like this lots!

  • @knmurphy1 well said.

  • @knmurphy1 Very well said!!!

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69

He has a Scottish nose...! A finer point of distinction.

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69

I DON´T KNOW EITHER BUT I THINK ITS SPELLED "MONEY"

  • @CRUSADERPIGGYBOY - I know I'm biased as I've been a Rod Stewart fan since the early 70's - but he had to work hard for the early success. Served an "apprenticeship" with Long John Baldry and other 60's groups but not as the frontman and certainly not for huge financial reward. It was the Every Picture Tells a Story album that started the money ball rolling and he has kept the ball rolling every since (a lot of others couldn't stay the course).

  • @Butterfly1Blue

I like Rod too, & "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

My first album by Rod was Every Picture Tells a Story.

Good album. But Rod will always get a thumbs up from

    me for, Maggie May.

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 its all the mojo baby..its all about mojo

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 I think people can have a sexy aura...and charisma and i think thats what rod had.

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 A big wallet

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Hey, dude, I like the way he looks and besides, I love his voice....... whatdaya' want to go judging someone by their looks instead of their talent If you have to judge them at all??? Bet 'cha can't sing like Rod, can you????? BTW: I am a straight, white, female southern grandmother and have love Rod's music since I heard his first song. Johnnie McEwen Parker

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 maybe you would have preferred elton?

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 its the voice, the fact that he's a musician , the love songs and cash !!! . chicks aren' t as hung up on looks as us guys are .

  • @cash1115 There's no difference between being "hung up" on looks and being hung up on musicians, or cash, or fame, or whatever. In fact, at least looks are a part of the actual person, whereas the rest are at best secondary features. Liking someone because of their popularity or their money versus liking them for who they actually are is still fetishizing the person.

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 money & fame, my friend- it´s all it takes, money & fame...

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 - BOY - Did you start something here!!!

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 .....what first attracted you to the MILLIONARE rod stewart...

  • @dexydonovanroger - ha, ha - just brilliant!!

  • @dexydonovanroger gorgeous, michael, you obviously dont know what women want, shame bless xx

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Have you ever seen him live? He is very sexy onstage..and his voice is sexy too. Talent is an attraction in itself and yes, I'm sure the money and fame doesn't hurt. And if your getting technical..what do they see in Mick Jagger either? Sexy isn't always good lookin! Alan Jackson told Reader's Digest once "I didn't have all these girls chasing after me when I was a tow-motor driver". :P

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Those eyes...look at those eyes. :))

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Someone could be blind, God forbid, and STILL see the true beauty of Rod. The imperfections of his vocalisms is what makes him what he is. (And, what countless others have tried to copy,)

  • One day asked me what is good music...Good music keeps playing ...

  • fair play to all you ponces out there

  • Bravo Mr. Stewart!

  • In recording this empathic and enlightened song - and releasing it as a single on both sides of The Atlantic - "Stewarty" did the homosexual community a service. From what I remember, back in 1976 there was far more social stigma attached to being gay than there is nowadays. So, for an 'A'-list celebrity to make it clear that he had nothing against people who 'batted for the other side' sexually, required guts. Well done, Mr Stewart.

  • Some would say that this is the finest single that "Stewarty" has made during his long and very distinguished career in the pop/rock music industry. It is certainly the most politically correct! Personally, I have often been critical of political correctness and its adherents ...... and rightly so, I believe. However, the fact remains that certain forms of PC are acceptable - indeed laudable - and Rod Stewart's long and carefully delineated song about a gay boy comes into this category.

  • karl

  • can't help but think that the second part of the song sounds like Don't let me down by the fab four but nevertheless I have listened to Rod since I very young as my bro had all his records and this is stil a beautiful, underrated classic which has stood the test of time well... Not a huge Rod fan but he has a great unique voice and has had some brilliant songs over the years...

  • Have loved this song since I first heard it. Absolutely wonderful.

  • I have ALWAYS loved this song - my mom actually introduced it to me - and the end where it changes makes me cry every time. It feels like he really lost a good friend.

  • An impressive song by any standards. And coming from a young(ish) 'A' List celebrity - as Stewart was, back in 1976 - who had, over the previous five years, acquired the reputation as a macho, red-blooded superstud - it is all the more impressive.

"The Killing of Georgie" has a great melody, and lyrics which are interesting and empathic. In my view, this memorable song is the acceptable face of 'political correctness' (even though that term had not yet been invented when it was recorded)

  • @marinagraham and you report for who?

  • Bedroom eyes, smoky voice and wise beyond years lyrics...Classic Rod Stewart

  • Came here because of Karl Pilkington.

  • Have thought this should be the main song of another Broadway Show based on this song and other rod stewart songs and Georgie as the main character( hot legs, do ya think im sexy, young turks, maggie may)

  • @drabboo - Good suggestion. Maybe on West End, London first though...

  • Karl's favourite song ... :D

  • Is he high here

  • HAPPY 66TH BIRTHDAY ROD - 10 JANUARY

  • love this song, brings a tear to me eye.... i know, it's pathetic

  • @godkingRoss one of my FAVS.....wHETHER a TEar or a Smile.....LOVe roD!!!!

  • Why the long face Rod??? Good song tho'.

  • terrific song. this really takes me back

  • seventies he wrote some of th best tunes around

  • hey man, the second part of the song, since 5:19 it's DONT LET ME DOWN from the Beatles !

  • super great afterall the years love this song

    10.000 stars thanks

  • Thanks Rod for having the guts to sing this song back in the rough "gaydays" you refer too! People today don't realize how far we've come. You've always been ahead of the curve. Thanks for showing your appreciation for people that I believe really matter to you:)

  • Okay, here's the dope, fans.... (a) the video clip was recorderd for a popular weekly British pop program that appeared on television; (b) Rod Stewart is straight; (c) Georgie was a real person - he was murdered in New York City in 1974. (The lyrics says '75' simply because it rhymed better.)

  • @nightimer - (b) wasn't hard to figure out - with two ex-wives, one current wife and the eighth child on the way ...!

  • when you listen to the song it just tells you (be true to yourself and dont listen to what people say) its a real life song, best song i ever heard ...and i am straight.its your choice to hide your preference but why hide it .it only makes things harder.

  • lol i sung this is my middle school class as one of my favortie songs

  • I love this tune.....it reminds me of a friend

  • THIS IS MY FAVORITE ROD STEWART SONG OF ALL TIME! I THINK IT WAS SOMEOF HIS BEST WORK, WITHOUT HIM EVEN KNOWING IT!!!! ♥

  • @JACKIEC917 - I think he knew it myself !

  • God loves all! whoever we are, whatever status we are into...BBUtt He hates SiN and He judge sinners. Love is just one of His traits, how about being a good judge and holy?? He came here not to condemned the world but through Jesus we might get save....repent,return and accept Him into our life and everything will be alright..

  • HI BRETT

  • still one of my favorites

  • r.i.p georgie!

  • You go butterfly blue!

  • Rod Stewart is awesome!!!! I saw him in concert he was great!!!!!!!

  • 1977 is the year" Diary of Quentin Crisp" took Britain by storm

  • rod looks smashed lol

  • I like his very long nose. :)

  • go on the

    rodfather

  • mr424all he was born in london and lived in scotland for a while

  • he looks pissed up probably was

  • @ziggybin

Yeah and probably didn,t pay for it.

Rod is tighter than a dead heat.

  • Comment removed

  • I like good old rod he's up there with the best

  • This song is beautiful, sad and inspiring. I cannot tell how many times i listened to it before I came out. Rod you are a diamond

  • Part 2 remembers Don´t Let Me Down!

  • @nilodocanto So true! But then, the Beatles have influenced many artists.

  • Although the Georgie of the title wasnt killed in a homophobic attack(it was a mugging gone wrong) it has become an anthem, and close to the hearts of many. Thanks Rod for singing it, and thanks to butterfly for posting it.

  • Man, if I ever had a chance to sleep with this man...ooooh, how lucky I would be. I have admired him since I was a litlle when he released Tonight's the Night.

    He just screams sexy!

  • Classic song from Rod..my all time favorite.

  • cracking song rod is a legend

  • Trully scottish and a voice in a million

  • o great..my name is Georgie...

  • rod stewarts greatest song a great performance good to see it back

  • rod stewarts greatest song a great performance

  • As a gay man I respect Rod Stewart a lot. He is clearly straight and always has been, but he wrote about the difficulties of being gay at a time when it was a far more taboo subject. I believe he is a part of what made it easier to be gay in the 21st century. Thanks Rod :)

  • FANTASTIC SONG ALONG WITH A MESSAGE! that people should REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO,ESPECIALLY IN THIS DAY AND VERY CRUEL AGE....WAY TO ROCK ROD.

  • Rod, I know you've always been one of the good guys. You are so much fun still for a 65 year old man(I'm only 30) I think you'd be more fun than most of the guys I laugh and joke with(by fun meaning he's fun loving, he's got friends of all different walks of life, races, he had his girls but he never forgot them and he has all his holidays with all his wives and all the children they have and there's no fur flying or catty remarks from everyone. He was a jet setter. Stew lived the life

  • my mom has this album "A Night on the Town" which features this hit single...I've been 'out' for a whole entire decade...our relationship has never been the same since. I finally just faded out of her life as of 2 weeks ago...I don't think I can take the brunt of them being ashamed anymore. Everything I do in my life now(good and bad) is overshadowed by "he's just gay"...So I'm just doing them all a favor and laying low...maybe permanently this time. My sister's gonna be heartbrokenshe's only 9

  • This was on a BBC show called 'Top Of The Pops'.

  • fffffffffffffffffffi'ing great video

  • i'm only 15, but i love this!!

  • Great song, he didn't sing it a the concert in Glasgow last night so thought I'd check it out here. Ta

  • Part II is outstanding...haunting...

  • beautiful song. i love it

what is this? a concert, a video clip or a live performance?

  • @kofemord - I'd say a video clip. It's mimed well and has a sense of performance.

  • @kofemord

  • @cragz - no comment has been made @kofemord. Was this an oversight ?

  • @Butterfly1Blue love this

  • Know the song well but have never seen this. Great song - way ahead of its time. Some artists are still afraid to stand up for gay rights - damage to career, etc. Thank you Rod for being fearless.

  • @970162cango Hear, hear !

  • @970162cango i don't think it damage his career he is very successful.

  • @970162cango what's really ashamed is that Adam Lambert came out of the closet before his career lifted off the ground...usually an artist waits a couple albums. I don't think it was wise he did that...he's basically doing it for anal sex(sorry) so you know what's gonna happen he's gonna get totally dirty out of his mind getting caught up in countless gay sex and drugs and eventually AIDS, he'll literally be put of commission by 35,living off welfare in and out of rehabs and dead by 45
